Zarak’s Straight Powers To Union-Rennen Triumph, Mr Hollywood Second

Gestut Karlshof homebred Straight (Ger) (Zarak {Fr}–Seductive {Ger}, by Henrythenavigator) was back among familiar foe in Sunday's G2 Sparkasse KolnBonn-188th Union-Rennen, Germany's premier G1 Deutsches Derby trial, at Cologne and delivered a powerful performance to garner the 11-furlong feature by daylight.

Straight was steadied in rear from flagfall and was detached from his rivals through halfway. Tanking forward once into the home straight, the 46-5 chance quickened impressively to gain control entering the final furlong and powered clear of his rivals to hit the line with a five-length buffer back to G3 Bavarian Classic victor and 'TDN Rising Star' My Hollywood (Ire) (Iquitos {Ger}). Straight had opened up with a Dec. 3 debut tally going nine furlongs at Baden-Baden before running third upped to 10 back there for the May 20 G3 Derby Trial in his only other start last time.

The win was Andreas Wohler's fifth in the contest, his most recent being with subsequent G1 Deutsches Derby hero Laccario (Ger) (Scalo {GB}) in 2019. “He is still a big baby and has not really matured yet, but today's peformance was excellent,” the trainer said. “Eduardo Pedroza is riding in Italy today, Jozef [Bojko] had ridden him before and it was Bruno Faust's explicit wish that he was to ride the colt.” Bojko added, “I knew I was sitting on a good horse, and everything went really well for him today. He has kept improving all the time and his last fast work was really good, so I had a good feeling that he would run a good race.” Karlshof's Holger Faust continued, “We were really relaxed before the race and planned to give him as easy a race as possible by holding him up and making use of his speed. We now have a good feeling for [the G1 Deutsches Derby at] Hamburg, but the Derby is one hell of a mad race.”

Pedigree Notes
Straight is the eighth pattern-race winner for his sire (by Dubawi {Ire}). Produced by a daughter of G1 Premio Lydia Tesio victrix Sortilege (Ire) (Tiger Hill {Ire}), he is a half to the unraced 2-year-old colt Star Striker (Ger) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), a yearling colt by Brametot (Ire) and a weanling colt by Counterattack (Aus). His dam Seductive (Ger) (Henrythenavigator) is a winning half-sister to last year's G3 Premio Guido Berardelli victor Sirjan (Ger) (Zarak {Fr}). The March-foaled homebred bay's third dam Sahel (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}) is a full-sister to the G1 Deutsches Derby-winning pair Samum (Ger) and Schiaparelli (Ger) and G1 Preis der Diana (German Oaks) heroine and G1 Deutsches Derby second Salve Regina {Ger}). Sanwa (Ger), another full-sister, is the dam of G1 Deutsches Derby hero Sea The Moon (Ger) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) while her descendants include this year's G2 Derby Italiano winner Goldenas (Ire) (Golden Horn {GB}).

Kingman’s Habana Dominates The German 1000 Guineas

Showing the overseas raiders a clean pair of heels on Sunday, Gestut Fahrhof's TDN Rising Star Habana (Ger) (Kingman {GB}–Hargeisa, by Speightstown) made all to conquer the G2 Wempe 103rd German 1000 Guineas at Dusseldorf. Disappointing on her course-and-distance prep when last of four in the Listed Henkel-Stutenpreis last month, the G3 Zukunfts-Rennen winner who had been down the field in the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac dominated here under an inspired ride from Eduardo Pedroza. Sent clear of Godolphin's 6-4 favourite Dream Of Love (Ire) (Shamardal) in the straight, the Andreas Wohler-trained 4-1 shot hit the line with three lengths to spare over Stenton Glider (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}), with 2 1/4 lengths back to Dream Of Love in third. “I had a good feeling right out of the stalls, we had planned to change the tactics and let her make her own race and she really delivered well,” Pedroza said. “She was very relaxed during the race and accelerated well. We've always held her in high esteem and that is why we gave Paris a go last year, but the [soft] going was entirely against her there.”

Mukhadram’s Lady Ewelina Goes 3-For-3 In Cologne Feature

Andreas Wohler trainee Lady Ewelina (GB) (Mukhadram {GB}–Quadri {GB}, by Polish Precedent) closed her unbeaten two-race juvenile campaign with a clear-cut victory Hannover's Listed Grosser Preis der Mehl-Mulhens-Stiftung and made a winning seasonal return in Sunday's G3 Karin Baronin von Ullmann – Schwarzgold-Rennen at Cologne.

The 7-2 chance, who debuted with a 10-length rout at Warsaw in August, was steadied to race at the back of the main cluster in seventh. Gradually improving from halfway, she made relentless headway in the straight to launch her bid approaching the final furlong and was ridden out in the closing stages to prevail by a half-length from G3 Preis der Winterkonigin third Tamarinde (Ger) (Amaron {GB}).

“She really is a classy filly, but may have actually needed this race to bring her forward,” said Wohler. “She is definitely in need of a longer trip, so I am not quite sure about running her in the [G2] German 1000 Guineas.”

Pedigree Notes
Lady Ewelina, the latest of 15 live foals, is one of seven scorers produced by an unraced half-sister to Listed Pretty Polly S. victrix Fashionable (GB) (Nashwan), herself the dam of stakes-winning G1 Prix Marcel Boussac and G1 Irish Oaks placegetter Jack Naylor (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}). Her second dam Fine Detail (Ire) (Shirley Heights {GB}) is a winning half-sister to five stakes performers headed by MGISW US champion Wandesta (GB) (Nashwan). The March-foaled bay, whose third dam De Stael (Nijinsky II) is a full-sister to G1 Coronation Cup-winning sire Quiet Fling (Nijinsky II), is a half-sister to G1 Herbie Dyke S. victor Turn Tide (GB) (Medicean {GB}) and the dual stakes-placed Eva Kant (GB) (Medicean {GB}).

Qatar Standout Noor Al Hawa To Stand In France

Noor Al Hawa (Fr) (Makfi {GB}–Majestic Roi, by Street Cry {Ire}), champion of his generation in Germany as a 3-year-old and a four-time highweighted older horse in Qatar, will enter stud in 2023 at Haras du Grand Courgeon some 25 kilometres northwest of Angers. He will command a fee of €2,300.

Bred by Rabbah Bloodstock Limited, Noor Al Hawa raced in the early part of his career for Jaber Abdullah and was trained by Andreas Wohler. He came to hand at three in 2016, posting a breakthrough black-type success in the Listed Prix de Tourgeville at Deauville and added a pair of German Group 3 tests before being acquired by the Qatar-based Al Wasmiyah Stud.

A three-length winner of the US$500,000 Qatar Derby (Listed), the chestnut was runner-up in the Listed H.H. The Emir's Trophy the following February and again in 2018 before winning the G3 Grand Prix de Vichy for trainer Elias Mikhalides that summer.

Permanently relocated to Doha in late 2018 and transferred to Georges Mikhalides, Noor Al Hawa went on to win 10 of 17 starts, including the 2021 Amir Trophy at his fifth attempt (video). His final racetrack appearance was a gallant fourth in defence of his Amir Trophy crown last February and he heads to the breeding barn with a career record of 18-6-5 from 37 starts for prize money of US$2,755,942.

“He's a remarkably tough horse, who has traveled extensively while performing over every surface and a large variety of distances,” renowned Qatar trainer Alban de Mieulle told Jour de Galop. “He's also a beautiful horse, very correct, with a great personality and I think that he will be a success as far as a sire of jumpers, for example. His owner is going to support him with flat mares.”

A half-brother to German stakes winner Majestic Jasmine (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}), Noor Al Hawa is out of Majestic Roi, who carried Abdullah's silks to a 16-1 upset in the 2007 G1 Sun Chariot S. at Newmarket after causing a 25-1 boilover in that year's G3 Fred Darling S. She was also second in that year's G2 Prix de Sandringham at Chantilly. The listed-winning second dam L'Extra Honor (Hero's Honor) was also responsible for G3 Arc Trial hero Black Spirit (Black Minnaloushe). Noor Al Hawa's deeper female family includes the outstanding Holy Roman Emperor (Ire) (Danehill).
