Muhaarar’s Razzle Dazzle Another Rising Star at Newmarket

Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum's homebred 2-year-old colt Razzle Dazzle (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}) finished clear of the remainder when a promising debut second over Newmarket July's seven-furlong strip in his Aug. 6 debut last time and stepped forward to claim 'TDN Rising Stardom' with a most taking display in Friday's MansionBet Watch And Bet British EBF Novice S. back over the same course and distance. The Richard Hannon trainee and 10-11 favourite was swiftly into stride, despite jinking right at the break, and gained an immediate lead. In command throughout, he had all rivals on the stretch when bounding clear approaching the final furlong and extended his buffer under mild coaxing up the hill to outclass Unilateralism (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) by an impressive 5 1/2 lengths.

“He is a lovely, big colt and I thought he would run well first time–and he duly did–and he would have improved for that,” commented trainer Richard Hannon. “He shaped with lots of promise first time and was still making up ground going to the line. I was even more pleased today, as he jumped out and was not keen, and he looked a very good horse out there in front. Let's see how he comes out of the race, he is in all the big races and has entries in the [G2] Champagne, [G2] Royal Lodge and [G1] Dewhurst. We will talk to Sheikh Obaid and decide what to do. It is all about next year with him, not about getting it while you can, as he is a long-term project.”

Razzle Dazzle, whose advance entries include an engagement in the Oct. 9 G1 Dewhurst S., is the sixth of seven foals and fourth scorer produced by an unraced granddaughter of G3 Prix du Bois victrix The Perfect Life (Ire) (Try My Best), herself a full-sister to MG1SW sire Last Tycoon (Ire) and the dam of G3 Gordon S.-winning sire Rabah (GB) (Nashwan) and G1 Cheveley Park S. third Najiya (GB) (Nashwan). The Perfect Life is also kin to MGSW sire Astronef (Ire) (Be My Guest) and to the dams of G1SW distaffers Immortal Verse (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), Tie Black (Ire) (Machiavellian), Valentine Waltz (Ire) (Be Mu Guest) and Sense of Style (Thunder Gulch). The March-foaled homebred bay is full to a yearling colt.

Shergar Cup Teams Confirmed

The four teams for Saturday's Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup jockey competition at Ascot have been confirmed, with three jockeys comprising each team. This year's Derby winning jockey Adam Kirby will captain Team Great Britain, on which he will be joined by Cieren Fallon and James Doyle. This year's G1 Gold Cup-winning rider Joe Fanning leads Team Ireland, which is also made up of David Egan and Tadhg O'Shea. Hayley Turner, the most successful rider in the history of the Shergar Cup, captains the Ladies Team which also includes Mickaelle Michel and Nicola Currie. Sean Levey, winner of the G1 Falmouth S. aboard Snow Lantern (GB) (Frankel {GB}) last month, in joined on the Rest of the World Team by Kevin Stott and Andrea Atzeni.

Nick Smith, director of racing and public affairs at Ascot Racecourse, said, “We're thrilled with the jockey line up for the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup this year. Obviously COVID-19 has made international travel very difficult so to pull together such a strong set of teams that still has a global feel is really pleasing. It should be a great day's racing and another thrilling renewal of the competition which sadly didn't take place last year but we look forward to building the day back up in the years to come.”

Rothschild Mission For Primo Bacio

David Ward's Primo Bacio (Ire) (Awtaad {Ire}) will venture to Deauville on Aug. 3 in an attempt to get off the mark at the highest level in the G1 Prix Rothschild.

Trained by Ed Walker, the 3-year-old filly won the Listed Oaks Farm Stables Fillies' S. at York on May 14 by three lengths, but could manage only fifth in the G1 Falmouth S. on July 9 after meeting trouble in running.

“She goes for the Prix Rothschild at Deauville,” Walker said. “She had no luck in the Falmouth. There were two things really, she was a little bit unlucky and she was also very fresh having not run for two months because she missed Ascot. She is a very fresh and exuberant filly, she was over-racing. Hopefully that will have brought her back down.

“Andrea [Atzeni] is going to go and ride her. With Alcohol Free and Snow Lantern both going to Goodwood, hopefully she'll have a good chance.”

Derby Double Not Off The Table For Santiago

Trainer Aidan O’Brien has revealed that the door is still open for Saturday’s G1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby winner Santiago (Ire) (Authorized {Ire}) to attempt to make it two Derbies in seven days in the Epsom version on July 4. Santiago and his five stablemates that contested the Curragh Classic could be entered for the G1 Investec Derby on Monday, O’Brien told Racing TV’s Luck On Sunday programme.

“It’s very possible [those that ran in Irish Derby could run at Epsom],” O’Brien said. “If any of them come out of the race exceptionally well and [the owners] want to make an entry, that’s what will happen. They didn’t do much [on Sunday], they’ll do a canter [on Monday] and a decision will be made some time during the morning. It was unconventional to run them so soon after Ascot, but they came out of the race well and that is why they ran. Nothing is definitely ruled out.”

As for those targeting Epsom who did not run at The Curragh, O’Brien said, “The lads are thinking about Mythical (Fr) (Camelot {GB}), who was a very nice 2-year-old last season. Then there’s a horse called Amhran Na Bhfiann (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who finished fourth in the maiden the second, third and fourth from the Irish Derby ran in.

“We’ve Russian Emperor (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who won at Ascot–he seems to have come out of it well. Then we’ve Mogul (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), who seems to have come out of Ascot well. We wanted two races before the Derby for him which is why he went there, we were trying to squeeze two races into one–we’ve been very happy with him since.

“The lads are talking about running Vatican City (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who was second in the Irish Guineas so that would be an interesting one and the third from the Guineas, Armory (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), is possible as well, but he could go to France. Those are the horses in the picture at the moment that didn’t run yesterday.”

O’Brien also identified four likely candidates for the G1 Investec Oaks on the same card, headed by his English and Irish Guineas winners.

“Love (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) is working towards the Oaks and Peaceful (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) is as well,” the trainer said. “The two fillies who were second and third in the Ribblesdale [Ennistymon (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Passion (Ire) (Galileo {Ire})] are on that programme at the moment.”

There was some Derby jockey news on Sunday as well, with Andrea Atzeni confirmed for Golden Gates H. winner Highland Chief (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}). Tom Marquand, who was recently taken off favourite English King (Fr) (Camelot {GB}), will have his first Derby ride as he continues his association with the Andrew Balding-trained Khalifa Sat (Ire) (Free Eagle {Ire}), according to Racing Post.
