Easy For New Bay’s Alcantor In The Thomas Bryon

   Up to a mile for the first time in Friday's G3 Prix Thomas Bryon Jockey Club de Turquie at Saint-Cloud, Baron Edouard De Rothschild's TDN Rising Star Alcantor (Fr) (New Bay {GB}) made light work of the test to put himself to the forefront of the year's home-trained juveniles.

Successful here and at Chantilly either side of a third to Havana Cigar (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) over a six-furlong trip that was too sharp at Chantilly in July, the Andre Fabre trainee was always in his comfort zone tagging on to the back of the field with Mickael Barzalona content to wait.

Allowing White Birch Farm's fellow TDN Rising Star Havana Cigar first run in the straight, the €180,000 Arqana December Foal purchase was finally unleashed wide of the remainder to take control a furlong out en route to a comfortable 2 1/2-length success. The Aga Khan's unexposed Saganti (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}) got up for second, a short neck ahead of Havana Cigar who appeared to tire late.

“His last race was the perfect education to teach him to relax after he had done too much in front on his second start,” Edouard De Rothschild said. “We also made the right decision not to run him in the Prix des Chenes at Longchamp on a day when the temperature reached new heights. He is certainly a very good horse with a lot of talent and it would be nice for his future career at stud to try to win a Group 1 this year, so the Criterium International is a possibility. We will first see how he comes out of this race and then decide then if we run him again this season or wait for 2024.”

Alcantor's dam Bianca De Medici (GB) (Medicean {GB}), a half to the stakes-winning Hungarian champion Thunder Teddington (GB) (Halling), is also responsible for the G2 Union-Rennen winner Boscaccio (Ger) (Mount Nelson {GB}). She is a granddaughter of the Haras du Quesnay broodmare of note Trevillari (Riverman), a full-sister to the G1 Prix Saint-Alary heroine Treble who produced the GI Shoemaker Breeders' Cup Mile-placed Tsigane (Fr) (Anabaa) and the dam of the brilliant dual G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe heroine Treve (Fr) (Motivator {GB}).

Also connected to last year's G2 Moonee Valley Gold Cup winner Francesco Guardi (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) and the multiple champion Triptych, Bianca De Medici's yearling filly by Romanised (Ire) was a €170,000 purchase by Haras de Meautry at last month's Arqana Deauville August Yearling Sale. She also has a filly foal by Waldgeist (GB).

Le Havre’s Casapueblo A New ‘TDN Rising Star’ At Chantilly

Godolphin's €130,000 Arqana October acquisition Casapueblo (Ire) (Le Havre {Ire}–Uruguay {Ire}, by Authorized {Ire}) justified 7-5 favouritism by overcoming traffic issues and was elevated to the 'TDN Rising Star' ranks with a taking display in Wednesday's Prix de la Maniguette at Chantilly.

The eventual winner lobbed along in third through steady early stages, but slipped to fourth when brake-checked and impeded approaching halfway in this debut. Full of run along the rail when encountering heavy traffic passing the quarter-mile marker, he found an open lane inside the final 300 metres and unleashed a powerful turn of foot to win, going away, by a length from Ouro Preto (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}). Casapueblo becomes his sire's third Rising Star and he joins G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches and G1 Prix de Diane runner-up Commes (Fr) and G3 Prix de Guiche third Another Sky (Fr) on the list.

“He had been working well in the mornings and we hoped to see him confirm it on the racecourse,” said Godolphin's Louise Benard. “We really liked what we saw and no doubt he will stay further in due course. Anthony Stroud liked him at the Arqana October sale and bought him, even though this is not the type of horse Godolphin is looking at in a sale. It has paid off and we will now see what Mr Fabre wants to do with him.”

Casapueblo is the latest of five reported foals and fourth scorer from as many runners produced by a winning half-sister to MGSP sire Urban King (Ire) (Desert King {Ire}) and the dual stakes-placed Victoria College (Fr) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}). Victoria College, in turn, is the dam of G2 Prix Chaudenay and G3 Prix de Lutece placegetter Lucky Look (Fr) (Teofilo {Ire}), G3 Prix de Conde runner-up Millfield (Fr) (Whipper) and Listed Prix Volterra third La Poutanesca (Ire) (Falco). Fabre Outlines Plans For Star Fillies Place Du Carrousel And Mqse De Sevigne

Andre Fabre has outlined plans for star fillies Place Du Carrousel (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) and Mqse De Sevigne (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) that could see the former line out in the Arc and the latter run at the Breeders' Cup. 

Last year's G1 Prix de l'Opera winner Place Du Carrousel beat the boys in the G2 Prix Foy last weekend and is now bound for the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. She could also be on the plane to America, according to Fabre, who revealed an audacious tilt at the Breeders' Cup and then Hong Kong could be in store.

Fabre said of Place Du Carrousel, who passed up an option against her own sex in the G1 Prix Vermeille most recently, “I wanted to run her against the colts to see how she did because that is what she is going to be running against in the Arc. I was quite happy.

“She proved she stayed 12 furlongs well. I need to discuss things with the owner, but if she remains in good shape she's quite fresh because she hasn't run much this year, we could look at big races in the States or in Hong Kong. She's proving that she can handle any sort of ground, but the Arc will be tough. She's going to run well.”

Mqse De Sevigne has won Group 1 races over a mile and 10 furlongs in her last two races and is likely heading to Newmarket next for the G1 Sun Chariot S. before she runs in the GI Breeders' Cup Mile.

Fabre explained, “She's a very nice filly. She will go to Newmarket next back over a mile. Her plan is the Breeders' Cup Mile so running her at Newmarket will sharpen her up a little bit–a mile race will be perfect.

“She has really improved this season, she's got stronger, but we always liked her. Ground doesn't matter to her, the ground is always nice at Newmarket. Alexis [Pouchin] has a good relationship with her and he will probably be on at Newmarket.”

Foy Title For Lope De Vega’s Place Du Carrousel

Al Shaqab Racing's Place Du Carrousel (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), already a Group 1 winner in last year's G1 Prix de l'Opera, defeated defending champion Iresine (Fr) (Manduro {Ger}) by a neck to take Sunday's G2 Qatar Prix Foy at ParisLongchamp. The latter was a half-length to the good of 2022 G1 Deutsches Derby and G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis Bayerisches Zuchtrennen hero Sammarco (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) in third.

The 4-year-old filly was the 13-5 second choice behind her G1 Prix Ganay conqueress Iresine at 1-2. Content to race midfield as Plesant Jane (Fr) (Pivotal {GB}) forged to the front while watched by Fenelon (Fr) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), Place Du Carrousel perched one off the fence next to Sammarco with Iresine last of the quintet. Drifting back a spot to fourth on the bend, the daughter of G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris victress Traffic Jam (Ire) (Duke Of Marmalade {Ire}) remained well covered up, as the field neared the straight. Closing willingly when given her cue, she quickly drew on even terms at the 200-metre mark and found just enough late to withstand the withering run of Iresine in the final strides.

Rupert Pritchard Gordon, racing manager for Al Shaqab Racing, said, “The filly showed that she's in good form. She's still fresh because she hasn't run much this year, due to a slight setback in the spring. The weather conditions are exceptional today, and Monsieur Fabre preferred to go for the Qatar Prix Foy rather than the [G1] Qatar Prix Vermeille, anticipating that there would be less pace in the Foy.”

Since her Opera heroics last October, Place Du Carrousel was a never-nearer fifth in the Ganay this spring, but after a break, was a winner over good to soft ground in the G3 Prix Gontaut-Biron at Deauville in August. Connections are now dreaming of the G1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

“When we decided to keep her in training at four, after her success in the Prix de l'Opéra Longines last year, the idea was

to aim her at the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe,” he added. “So if all goes well between now and then, we'll be heading to the race of dreams.”

Mandore International Agency, on behalf of Al Shaqab Racing, picked up the bay for €260,000 out of the Arqana Select Sale at Deauville in September of 2020 from the Ballylinch Stud draft.

Pedigree Notes

One of 19 Group 1 winners for her Ballylinch sire, Place Du Carrousel is the first foal out of Traffic Jam, who also ran second in the G2 Prix de Pomone. Since foaling the Foy winner, she has delivered four fillies–the 3-year-old Nariman Point (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), a 1.05-million gns Kingman (GB) juvenile named Monyat Galby (Ire), a yearling by Sea The Stars (Ire) who is consigned as lot 158 by Ballylinch to the upcoming Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1, and a full-sister to the winner this term.

Her third dam, Sweet Emotion (Ire) (Bering {GB}), foaled Listed Midsummer S. victor Winged Cupid (Ire) (In The Wings {GB}), who also ran second in the G1 Racing Post Trophy. This is the extended family of the high class dual Group 1 winner Lillie Langtry (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}).
