Ribchester Filly Earns Rising Star Tag at Deauville

Al Shaqab Racing's Shaikha (Fr) (Ribchester {Ire}) was one of three supplementary nominations for Thursday's Prix Equidia at Deauville and justified the additional expenditure with a taking performance in the six-furlong debutantes' heat to earn 'TDN Rising Stardom'. She was sharply into stride and tracked the pace in second through the early fractions. Looming large on the bridle soon after passing the halfway mark, the 9-2 chance was not for catching once inching ahead approaching the final quarter mile and kept on powerfully under miminal urging in the latter stages to easily outclass Assyrian Queen (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) by an impressive three lengths.

Shaikha is the second foal and scorer produced by a winning half-sister to four black-type performers headed by G3 Prix du Bois victrix Keratiya (Fr) (Iron Mask) and Listed Prix Hampton winner Kerasona (Fr) (Oasis Dream {GB}). The €240,000 Arqana September yearling is a half-sister to Listed Criterium de Lyon victor and G3 Prix La Force placegetter Darkness (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}). The March-foaled dark bay's second dam Kerasha (Fr) (Daylami {Ire}), herself a daughter of G3 Anglesey S. winner Keraka (Storm Bird), is a half-sister to Listed Brownstown S. victrix Kermiyana (Ire) (Green Desert) and G3 Prix de la Porte Maillot third Keramani (Fr) (Linamix {Fr}).

Invincible Spirit’s Babylone Takes The Malleret

Already the leading trainer in the G2 Prix de Malleret with nine wins, Andre Fabre made it a perfect 10 on Wednesday as Haras Voltaire's Babylone (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) scored at ParisLongchamp. Held up on the rail racing worse than mid-division by Mickael Barzalona throughout the early stages, the 9-1 shot who had beaten a subsequent winner in a 10-furlong conditions event here June 10 was extricated from a pocket passing the two-furlong pole. In front a furlong later, the bay held the strong challenge of Adhafera (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) to score by a neck. “She won very well last time where she showed that she needed a mile and a half and she is coming around at the right time,” the owners' racing manager Laurent Benoit said. “She kicked very nicely at the finish and we'll see how she comes out of this. I don't know where she will run again, Andre Fabre will decide but it could be that the [Sept. 12 G1 Prix] Vermeille is a target for the autumn.”

Babylone, who had beaten the subsequent G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches third Kennella (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) when breaking her maiden over seven furlongs at Chantilly in September and who had been second on her seasonal bow over 10 furlongs back at that venue May 17 prior to her success here last month, is out of a daughter of the Niarchos Family's G1 Prix Marcel Boussac heroine Denebola (Storm Cat). Also runner-up in the G1 Prix de la Foret, she is in turn the second dam of the G1 Prix de Diane winner Senga (Blame) and Pista (American Pharoah) who captured the G2 Park Hill S. and was runner-up in the G1 Prix de Royallieu. The third dam is the celebrated Coup de Genie (Mr. Prospector), winner of the G1 Prix Morny and G1 Prix de la Salamandre whose descendants include Bago (Fr) (Nashwan), Maxios (GB) (Monsun {Ger}) and the four-times grade I heroine Emollient (Empire Maker). The dam Typique (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who was bought for €450,000 at the 2016 Goffs November Mares Sale, also has the unraced 2-year-old filly Assyrian Queen (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and a yearling filly by Dubawi (Ire).

Mare Australis Sidelined By Ankle Injury

Gestut Schlenderhan's Mare Australis (Ire) (Australia {GB}), a winner of the G1 Prix Ganay, has suffered a setback with one of his ankles and will be out for the summer according to trainer Andre Fabre. A winner of a French listed race last June, the chestnut ran second in the Oct. 25 G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris and Apr. 11 G2 Prix d'Harcourt prior to his May 2 Ganay win at ParisLongchamp.

“Unfortunately Mare Australis has a problem with an ankle,” said Fabre. “I hope he will recover in time for the autumn, but he won't run at all through the summer.”

Fabre's G1 Prix de Diane runner-up Philomene (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) will return to the races in the G3 Prix de la Nonette at Deauville on Aug. 21. Successful in her only start as a juvenile last year, the bay scored in the G3 Prix Penelope at Saint-Cloud on Apr. 6 before a sixth-place run in the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches on May 16. She was only three-quarters of a length behind Joan Of Arc (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the French Oaks at Chantilly on June 20.

“Philomene will run in Deauville on Aug. 21–she's going to have her prep race for the Vermeille,” said Fabre. “I think it's clear she's capable of winning a Group 1. You couldn't blame the jockey last time–because that happens at Chantilly.”

Oasis Dream’s Erasmo Prevails in Chantilly’s G3 Prix Paul de Moussac

Godolphin's 3-year-old colt Erasmo (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), successful at Chantilly in last term's Listed Prix Saraca and in last month's Listed Prix de Pontarme at ParisLongchamp, stepped up to better a second in the Apr. 11 G3 Prix La Force with a narrow victory in Sunday's G3 Prix Paul de Moussac Longines back at Chantilly. Settled just off the pace in fourth until taking closer order in the straight, the 14-5 second favourite launched his challenge going well passing the quarter-mile marker and was ridden out inside the final furlong to withstand the persistent threat of G2 German 2000 Guineas runner-up Best Lightning (Fr) (Sidestep {Aus}) by a short neck in snug fashion for a career high. Breizh Eagle (Fr) (Bow Creek {Ire}), who ran third in last month's G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains, was unable to land a telling blow and finished sixth.

“He is such a brave horse, he's all heart and a fighter,” said Godolphin's Lisa Jane Graffard. “He never runs a bad race and deserved that one. We will see how he comes out of the race, it is very warm and it may have taken a lot out of him. The [July 11 G1] Prix Jean Prat [at Deauville] is a possibility, but if he needs a rest then we will wait.”

Erasmo is one of three black-type winners for the stakes-placed Sant Elena (GB) (Efisio {GB}) and the February-foaled bay is kin to MG1SW sire Reckless Abandon (GB) (Exchange Rate), MGSP Listed Metropolitan S. victor Best Approach (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) and Listed Lenebane S. third Family Tree (GB) (Galileo {Ire}). He is also kin to the hitherto unraced 2-year-old filly Elena's Gift (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and the dam of G3 Sweet Solera S. victress West End Girl (GB) (Golden Horn {GB}). Sant Elena, who is out of a half-sister to G1 Racing Post Trophy scorer Crowded House (GB) (Rainbow Quest), is kin to MGISW distaffer Ticker Tape (GB) (Royal Applause {GB}) and G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest victor Brando (GB) (Pivotal {GB}).
