Lope de Vega Filly On Top In The Cleopatre

Off the mark over nine furlongs at Fontainebleau Apr. 12, Al Shaqab Racing and Ballylinch Stud's Place du Carrousel (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) came through her first major test in style to annexe Friday's G3 Prix Cleopatre at Saint-Cloud. Bred to appreciate at least this 10 1/2-furlong trip, being out of the G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris winner Traffic Jam (Ire) (Duke of Marmalade {Ire}), the Andre Fabre trainee was held up in last early in contrast to her last outing when she was sent forward from the break. Nudged along by Mickael Barzalona to close at the top of the straight, the 23-10 favourite was produced wide to overhaul Samahram (Fr) (Sea the Moon {Ger}) and Kawida (GB) (Sir Percy {GB}) with 100 metres remaining and beat that duo by 3/4 of a length and a head respectively.

Rupert Pritchard Gordon, representing Al Shaqab in France, said, “When she won last time at Fontainebleau she jumped the pedestrian path after the finish line, unseated Mickael Barzalona and was knocked by the filly behind her that fell–it was a scary moment and she was given a few days off to recover,” he explained. “Lately, she was fine at home and pleasing in her work and she confirmed that today in good style. She was perfectly relaxed behind and she quickened brilliantly, so we have to be delighted. She is in both group 1s, the [May 29] Saint Alary [at Parislongchamp] and the Diane [at Chantilly June 19], and Andre Fabre will make the call.”

Place du Carrousel, who was a €260,000 purchase by Mandore International Agency at the 2020 Arqana Deauville Select Sale, is the first foal out of the aforementioned Traffic Jam who was also second in the G2 Prix de Pomone and is a half to the dam of the Australian group 3-placed Last Sight (NZ) (Showcasing {GB}). Her family features the G1 Racing Post Trophy runner-up Winged Cupid (Ire) (In the Wings {GB}) and the G1 Coronation S. and G1 Matron S. heroine Lillie Langtry (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), which links her to Galileo's Minding (Ire) and Empress Josephine (Ire) and Sunday's G1 1000 Guineas hopeful Tuesday (Ire). The dam has the 2-year-old filly Nariman Point (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), a yearling filly by Kingman (GB) and a filly foal by Sea the Stars (Ire).

Intello’s Junko Battles To Prix Noailles Success

Alain and Gerard Wertheimer's homebred 3-year-old gelding Junko (GB) (Intello {Ger}), who went untested as a juvenile, followed up an impressive score in his Feb. 24 debut at Chantilly with an equally taking triumph back at that track last month and continued on an upward trajectory by notching a career high on black-type bow in Sunday's G3 Prix Noailles at ParisLongchamp. Under restraint in a close-up second until scrubbed along off the home turn, the 17-10 favourite locked horns with the pacesetting Maximus (Fr) (Intello {Ger}) passing the quarter-mile marker and would not be denied under a late drive to deny that tenacious rival by a neck.

Junko is the third foal and scorer produced by GIII Regret S. and GIII Edgewood S. placegetter Lady Zuzu (Dynaformer), herself a half-sister to MGSW GI Woodford Reserve Turf Classic and GI Woodford Reserve Manhattan H. runner-up Optimizer (English Channel) and to the dam of stakes-winning GI Belmont Derby Invitational third Cellist (Big Blue Kitten). The April foaled-homebred bay is kin to a 2-year-old colt by Frankel (GB) and a weanling colt by Siyouni (Fr).

Siyouni’s Mqse de Sevigne Equals Vanteaux Record For Fabre

Baron Edouard de Rothschild's homebred 3-year-old filly Mqse de Sevigne (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}), who bettered a Sept. 2 debut third over one mile at ParisLongchamp with a Sept. 29 seven-furlong breakthrough win at Chantilly, returned to scene of her unveiling to secure a career high in Sunday's G3 Prix Vanteaux. Breaking well and settling third after the early skirmishes, the 39-5 chance made stealthy progress in the straight and ran on strongly once coming under pressure for her challenge approaching the eighth pole to comfortably assert superiority by 1 1/2 lengths and a short neck from Know Thyself (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Hot Queen (Fr) (Recorder {GB}). The win provided trainer Andre Fabre with a record-equalling seventh victory in the nine-furlong contest.

“She was a shade unlucky when encountering two good fillies first time out and won nicely on her second start last year,” said winning owner and France Galop president Baron Edouard de Rothschild. “She has developed into a handsome-looking filly over the winter and I think she won very well today. Her dam belonged to my father [Baron Guy de Rothschild] and has already produced Meandre, so I don't think staying further will be a problem for her. She's entered in the [June 19 G1] Prix de Diane [at Chantilly], of course, but we'll not commit to anything just yet. We shall take time to see how she comes out of this race and will, in time, decide which route to take.”

Mqse de Sevigne, who becomes the 30th pattern-race winner for her sire, is the ninth of 10 foals and one of six scorers out of Listed Prix de Thiberville and Listed Prix Occitanie runner-up Penne (Fr) (Sevres Rose {Ire}), herself a half-sister to the dam of Listed Prix de la Californie and Listed Prix Omnium II victor Gris Tendre (Fr) (Slickly {Fr}). The February-foaled homebred bay, who hails from the direct damline of G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches and G1 Prix de Diane heroine Apollonia (Fr) (Djebel {Fr}), is a half-sister to four-time Group 1 winner Meandre (Fr) (Slickly {Fr}), Listed River Eden Fillies' S. runner-up Dogma (Fr) (Mount Nelson {GB}) and the hitherto unraced 2-year-old filly Une Fausse Venus (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}).
