Sea The Moon’s Wonderful Boy Outclasses Rivals In Krefeld Feature

Markus Klug trainee Wonderful Boy (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}–Wonderful Gorl {Ger}, by Areion {Ger}), who was last seen shedding maiden status at Cologne in September, stamped his authority on Sunday's G3 Herzog von Ratibor-Rennen at Krefeld and hit the line with a wide-margin buffer for a career high in the 8 1/2-furlong test.

The 17-5 chance, who had earlier poster an Aug. 26 debut third at Baden-Baden, was swiftly into stride from the inside stall and claimed an immediate lead. Allowed an inch of rein soon after turning for home, he was beyond recall approaching the final furlong and geared down in the closing stages to easily outclass Novemberrose (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) by 10 lengths. Gestut Park Wiedingen's 13-5 favourite. Flamingo Moon (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) was unable to land any kind of blow and finished 16 lengths adrift in third.

“I was hoping to be placed and am a bit surprised just how well he ran,” said winning rider Andrasch Starke. “He worked well enough at home, but not to suggest this kind of performance. He is still developing and, on this heavy going, he ran like a really good horse. He was quite keen in the early stages, but then settled well and eventually responded beautifully. I always thought he was a horse for next year and I think we can really look forward to 2024 with him.”

Pedigree Notes
Wonderful Boy, who becomes the 18th pattern-race winner for his sire, is the lone reported foal produced by Listed Grosser Soldier Hollow Preis runner-up Wonderful Gorl (Ger) (Areion {Ger}), herself kin to MGSW G2 Union-Rennen victor Wonderful Moon (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}). The March-foaled chestnut's third dam Wonderful World (Ger) (Dashing Blade {GB}), who produced G3 Prix Chloe victrix Wunder (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}), is a full-sister to three black-type winners headed by MGSP Listed Gran Premio d'Italia victor Winning Dash (Ger). His fourth dam Wonderful Lady (Ger) (Surumu {Ger}) ran third in the G2 German 1000 Guineas and is kin to the stakes-winning G1 Deutsches Derby runner-up Winwood (Ger) (Surumu {Ger}).

Zarak’s Shagara Prevails In Winterkonigin Thriller

Just a head separated Shagara (Ire) (Zarak {Fr}–She Bang {Fr}, by Monsun {Ger}) and Lady Mary (Ger) (Lawman {Fr}) when they ran second and third in last month's Listed Winterkonigin-Trial at Cologne, and it was a case of as you were as the pair fought out an exciting finish to Sunday's G3 BBAG Preis der Winterkonigin at Baden-Baden. Shagara had earlier defeated the reopposing New York City (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) over seven furlongs in her Aug. 19 debut at Mulheim and that rival provided an added boost to the form by finishing on the podium in this one-mile test.

The eventual winner, sent postward as the crowd's 13-5 pick, raced in mid division during the opening exchanges and went through halfway in fifth. Bustled along rounding the home turn, Shagara made relentless headway in the straight to take a share of third entering the final furlong–where she received a hefty bump from Lady Mary–and kept on strongly under continued rousting to deny that rival by a head on the line for a career high. New York City held a slender advantage inside the furlong pole, but was usurped in the closing stages and finished 1 1/2 lengths adrift in third.

“She has the heart of a lion and fought incredibly hard,” said winning rider Andrasch Starke. “She was really strong at the finish and what a racehorse she is.” Trainer Markus Klug added, “It's crazy what a fighter's heart Shagara has. She put in so much effort to win and now she will take her well-deserved winter break.” Gestut Schlenderhan's general manager Gebhard Apelt continued, “She wasn't in the best position at first and it is very rare to see a 2-year-old fight like that.”

Pedigree Notes
Shagara, who becomes the 12th pattern-race winner for her sire, is the sixth of seven foals and one of five scorers produced by a winning sibling of Listed Hannover Derby-Trial runner-up Sargas (Ire) (Shirocco {Ger}). Her second dam, Listed Henkel-Trial victrix Servenya (Ger) (Dashing Blade {GB}), is a full-sister to G2 Maurice Lacroix-Trophy runner-up Slawomira (Ger) and a half to Listed Preis der Hotellerie Baden-Baden victor Skythe (Ger) (Spectrum {Ire}) and the stakes-placed duo Stoikov (Ger) (Platini {Ger}) and Salomea (Ire) (Monsun {Ger}). Servenya is also kin to the dam of this race's 2004 winner Sorrent (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}). The March-foaled homebred bay is a half-sister to G2 Union-Rennen third Sky Out (Ire) (Adlerflug {Ger}) and a weanling colt by Ito (Ger) named Shejtan (Ire).

Sea The Moon’s Daytona Sea Snags TDN Rising Star In Germany

Gestut Ittlingen's well-regarded G1 Preis der Diana (German Oaks) entry Daytona Sea (GB) (Sea The Moon {Ger}–Daytona {GB}, by Motivator {GB}) was usurped at the tills for Monday's Primetec-Pokal at Hannover, but was unmatched in the 11-furlong contest and powered to 'TDN Rising Stardom' with an impressive debut triumph. She was rousted from the gates to occupy a slot along the rail in a handy third for the most part. Improving one spot off the home turn, the 29-10 second choice swooped for control approaching the final furlong and was ridden clear in the closing stages to easily outclass Ultima (Ger) (Amaron {GB}) by an impressive 3 3/4 lengths.

“I was expecting her feature to prominently, like she does in her work, but I did not anticipate she would win so easily,” trainer Markus Klug told GaloppOnline. “Her next run could be at Hamburg [in the July 2 G3 Mehl Mulhens Trophy].”

Daytona Sea, half to the unraced 2-year-old filly Dua Lina (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}), becomes the third winner from as many runners for G3 Hamburger Stutenpreis victrix Daytona Bay (GB) (Motivator {GB}), herself kin to G3 La Coupe winner Dallas Affair (GB) (Soldier Hollow {GB}) and the stakes-placed Diamond Daisy (Ger) (Shirocco {Ger}). The April-foaled bay's mutiple stakes-winning second dam Daytona (Ger) (Lando {Ger}) is a full-sister to G1 Deutschland-Preis hero Donaldson (Ger) and to the dam of G3 Preis der Winterkonigin victrix and G1 Preis der Diana (German Oaks) runner-up Diamond Dove (Ger) (Dr Fong).

Adlerflug Filly Earns Rising Star Tag At Cologne

Sporting the famed Gestut Rottgen silks in Cologne's Preis vom Weidenpescher Park on Sunday, Naila (Fr) (Adlerflug {Ger}) overpowered her peers to become the latest German TDN Rising Star. Sent off the 9-10 favourite for the 1850-metre maiden, the Markus Klug-trained chestnut broke well from the widest stall to track the leading duo throughout the early stages. Taking control approaching the two-furlong marker, she surged clear to win unchallenged by 10 lengths with Andrasch Starke easing down.

The winner is the last known foal out of the listed-winning dam Naomia (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}), who has produced the G3 Zukunftsrennen scorer Narella (Ire) (Reliable Man {GB}).
