Editorial Relocated To Rancho San Miguel

Stakes-siring stallion Editorial (War Front–Playa Maya, by Arch), a half-brother to successful sire and champion Uncle Mo (Indian Charlie), will move to Rancho San Miguel in California to stand for $3,500 live foal guaranteed next year. He most recently stood at Anchor & Hope Farm in Maryland. His oldest foals are 3-year-olds.

“If I were to compare the U.S. stallion market to the U.S. stock market, I would say we are acquiring an emerging stock at the optimal time for California breeders,” said Rancho San Miguel owner Tom Clark. “Editorial has come out firing with quality in his first batch of runners, and has already shown that he can significantly improve his mares.

“His rare combination of sire power in War Front and Uncle Mo is sure to appeal to our state's breeders, who enjoy racing on a variety of surfaces and at a variety of distances.”

Bred by the Playa Maya Syndicate, the 8-year-old developed into a maiden winner at Gulfstream for the Coolmore partners and Todd Pletcher. Retired to stud in Maryland in 2018, the full-brother to G1 Irish 1000 Guineas runner-up Could It Be Love (War Front)'s progeny are led by two-time stakes winner Alottahope, as well as the stakes-placed My Thoughts.

Clark added, “Climax Stallions is retaining an ownership stake in Editorial, so he will be well-supported with top mares, including from our farm, as we take the baton and navigate him through the important next phase of his stallion career.”

Maryland-Based Stallion Imagining Dies

Imagining (Giant's Causeway–Daydreaming, by A.P. Indy) was euthanized Aug. 23 due to complications from colic, according to a release from Anchor & Hope Farm. The 14-year-old, who won the GI Man O' War S. in 2014 for Phipps Stable and Shug McGaughey, was under the care of veterinarians at New Bolton Center, where surgery was attempted, but the damage was deemed too severe.

“Imagining has been with us since the start in 2015. We want to thank Shug McGaughey and the Phipps family for trusting us to bring a Grade 1-winning millionaire from a prolific Phipps pedigree to Maryland,” said Grace Merryman of Anchor & Hope Farm. “We were proud to do so and will be grateful to Imagining for what he did for us”

A five-time stakes winner and runner-up in an additional four top-level events on the turf, Imagining–whose female family includes Grade I winners Girolamo (A.P. Indy), Got Lucky (A.P. Indy), Super Saver (Maria's Mon) and Bluegrass Cat (Storm Cat)– posted nine victories and seven minor placings from 26 starts for earnings of nearly $1.2 million.

“His kids are routinely on the board around the Mid-Atlantic and they include stakes horses, graded placings, both dirt and turf winners and recently, talented runners over fences,” said Louis Merryman of Anchor & Hope Farm. “With his pedigree, we look forward to seeing the broodmare careers of his daughters.”

Stud Fees Announced for Anchor & Hope Farm

Anchor & Hope Farm in Port Deposit, Maryland has released reduced stud fees for 2021.

Bourbon Courage and Imagining will each stand for $2,000. Holy Boss and Long River will each stand for $1,000.

Bourbon Courage leads Midatlantic second crop sires by stakes horses. Imagining is represented by multiple stakes winner Monday Morning QB. Holy Boss will be represented by his first runners in 2021 and Long River will have yearlings of 2021.

“In an effort to support the breeding industry in challenging times, we want to do our part for the people who keep this industry alive–the small breeder,” Louis Merryman said.

“The decline in mares bred nationally and locally has been on our radar, and now combined with the economic impacts of COVID-19 we recognize we all need to do our part to sustain the industry. Our hope is the reduced stud fees will make breeding more feasible for large and small operations alike.”
