Tapit, Newcomer McKinzie Lead Gainesway’s 2021 Stallion Roster

Gainesway announced stud fees Oct. 21 for its 2021 stallion roster.

“It has always been Gainesway's goal to provide breeders with quality and value,” said Gainesway CEO Antony Beck. “The current economic climate that breeders are facing makes this more important than ever. Our stallion roster offers a diverse group of established stallions and exciting young studs who look to establish a new era at Gainesway.”

Tapit, a three-time champion sire, has solidified his status as one of the most influential and breed-shaping stallions of the last half century. North America's leading stallion by lifetime graded stakes winners (84), Grade 1 winners (27), and progeny earnings ($159,714,395) will stand for $185,000 in 2021. He is the only stallion to appear in the top five general sires list nine of the past 10 years.

In 2020, Tapit is represented by recent Grade 1 winners and Breeders' Cup hopefuls Valiance and Essential Quality. In the sales ring, yearlings by Tapit topped both opening sessions of Keeneland's September Sale, including the $2-million sale topper.

Among the nation's leading broodmare sires, Tapit is also cementing his legacy as a sire of sires. His top sons at stud include Constitution and Tapizar, plus promising young sires Frosted, Tonalist, Tapiture, and Tapwrit.

McKinzie, a brilliantly fast four-time Grade 1 winner, will enter stud in 2021. The son of Street Sense will stand for $30,000. A Grade 1 winner at ages two, three, and four, McKinzie posted 11 triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures during his career, as well as an impressive 1/4 Ragozin in winning the G1 Whitney Stakes. His seven graded stakes wins include four Grade 1 victories for career earnings of nearly $3.5-million.

Beck added, “I am excited about beginning this new chapter in the Gainesway stallions with McKinzie. His accolades on the racetrack speak for themselves with his brilliance and race record, I couldn't think of a better prospect to bring to Gainesway to compliment our champion sire Tapit.”

Karakontie, who has gotten off to a fast start at stud, will stand for $10,000. A three-time Grade 1 winner, including the 2,000 Guineas and Breeders' Cup Mile, Karakontie hails from the family of Kingmambo. A testament to his versatility and international appeal, Karakontie is represented by stakes horses in three different countries, including graded stakes victories on both dirt and turf.

His 2-year-old daughter, Spanish Loveaffair, is a Breeders' Cup hopeful following a win in this year's Sharp Susan Stakes and a runner-up finish in the G2 Jessamine Stakes at Keeneland in her last out. His 3-year-old daughter, Princess Grace, has won two of three starts and finished runner-up in the G3 Valley View Stakes at Keeneland Oct. 16. Karakontie also had a session-topping yearling sell for $500,000 at the Keeneland September Sale.

Tapwrit, a $1.2-million yearling purchase turned classic winner and stakes record setter, will stand for $10,000. Out of juvenile Grade 1 winner Appealing Zophie, Tapwrit is among the best bred sons of Tapit to ever enter stud. His much-anticipated first weanlings will be offered at the upcoming November Breeding Stock sales.

Tapizar, a Breeders' Cup-winning miler by Tapit from the family of champion filly Untapable, will stand for $10,000. Tapizar's graded stakes winners include the sensational racemare, Monomoy Girl, an Eclipse champion and six-time Grade 1 winner. His 2-year-olds sold up to $500,000 at this year's OBS March sale.

McKinzie is the best prospect to retire this season with a portfolio that stands out amongst his peers.”

Juveniles By Candy Ride, Uncaptured, Empire Maker, Share Fastest Quarter At OBS October Under Tack Show

A filly by Candy Ride, a gelding by Uncaptured and a colt by Empire Maker sped quarters in : 21 1/5 to share honors for the fastest work at the distance at the Under Tack Show for the 2-year-olds and Horses of Racing Age section of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's 2020 October Sale.

Hip No. 2, consigned by Top Line Sales LLC, Agent, is a 2-year-old bay filly by Candy Ride out of stakes placed Garnet Crystals, by Lion Heart, a half-sister to graded stakes winner Rerun.
Hip No. 35, a 2-year-old bay gelding by Uncaptured consigned by Ocala Stud, is out of stakes winner Shining Moment, by Yes It's True,
Hip No. 39, a 2-year-old bay colt by Empire Maker also consigned by Top Line, is a half-brother to graded stakes winner Majestic River out of graded stakes-placed stakes winner Tempus Fugit, by Alphabet Soup.

Hip No. 17, a 2-year-old bay colt by Kitten's Joy consigned by Top Line Sales LLC, Agent, turned in a quarter in :21 2/5. He's out of Magicalcarpetride, by Smart Strike, a half sister to grade one stakes winner Smooth Roller.

The fastest three-eighths by a 2-year-old was by Hip No. 44, a colt by Anchor Down consigned by Navas Equine, Agent, who stopped the timer in :33 2/5. He's a half brother to stakes placed Tale Twister out of Abounding Love, by Tale of the Cat.

Hip No. 56, Annette's Humor, a 4-year-old chestnut filly by Shackleford consigned by consigned by Top Line Sales LLC, Agent, breezed the day's fastest three eighths, clocked in :33 1/5. She's a half-sister to stakes winner Sweet Juana out of Whimsical Miss, by Distorted Humor.

Hip No. 50, a 2-year-old bay filly by Speightster consigned by Julie Davies LLC, Agent, worked the session's fastest eighth, stopping the timer in :10 1/5. She's out of Bern Legacy, by Bernstein, a daughter of graded stakes placed stakes winner Penny Marie.

Hip No. 58, Slashing, a 2-year-old colt by Nyquist consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent, broke his maiden impressively in maiden special weight company this past Wednesday at Gulfstream Park West, leading all the way and winning by 5-1/4 lengths. The bay colt is out of graded stakes placed Proud Pearl, by Proud Citizen, a full sister to champion Proud Spell.

Anchor Down Picks Up First Winner At Ellis Park

Drop Anchor fanned out wide and got the job done on Sunday at Ellis Park to become the first winner for his sire Anchor Down, BloodHorse reports.

The gray or roan colt had some trouble at the break, and spent the first half-mile of the six-furlong race near the back of the field. Then, he was moved out seven-wide in the lane under jockey Brian Hernandez Jr., and they took the clear path to a 1 1/2-length victory. Drop Anchor stopped the clock in 1:12.32 over a fast main track.

Drop Anchor won for the partnership of Harold Lerner, AWC Stables, Nehoc Stables and David Bernsen, and he is trained by Kenny McPeek.

Bred in Kentucky by Chad Frederick and Phoenix Farm and Racing, Drop Anchor is out of the placed Curlin mare Black Coronas.

Anchor Down stands at Gainesway in Lexington, Ky., for an advertised fee of $7,500.

The 9-year-old son of Tapit won five of 17 starts for earnings of $734,254, with victories in the Grade 2 Kelso Handicap and the G3 Westchester Stakes. He also finished second in the G1 Metropolitan Handicap.

Anchor Down is out of the Grade 3-winning Orientate mare Successful Outlook, making him a full-brother to Grade 3 winner Iron Fist and a half-brother to Grade 1 winner Sweet Lulu.

Anchor Down’s First Winner Comes at Ellis

Longshot Drop Anchor (Anchor Down) started slowly but finished up strongly to become the first winner for his freshman sire (by Tapit) Sunday at Ellis Park. With just an abbreviated worktab on display, the grey was let go at 12-1 and was a bit sluggish from the blocks. He was shuffled back to last entering the turn, but got back into the bit to tug his way slightly closer heading for home. Guided very wide for the stretch drive, Drop Anchor shifted in sharply when switching leads but leveled off nicely after that to power past his competition by a widening 1 1/2 lengths. Fellow firster Rye Sense of Humor (Distorted Humor) completed the exacta.

The winner was the fifth-most expensive yearling by his sire last year when he brought $90,000 at Fasig-Tipton July. Anchor Down scored a pair of open-length victories going a one-turn mile at Belmont in the 2016 GIII Westchester S. and GII Kelso H.–the latter victory came over Tamarkuz, who sired his second winner one race later at Ellis. Anchor Down was also second in that year’s GI Metropolitan H. and now stands at Gainesway Farm.

The winner’s dam is out of SW and GSP Tres Coronas (Chief’s Crown). She produced a Tapwrit filly this season before being brad back to Enticed.
