90k Anchor Down Colt Tops Louisiana Yearling Sale

A colt by Anchor Down out of the unraced Half Ours mare Solo Buena was purchased by Noble Oaks Farm for $90,000 to top Thursday's Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association's Breeders Yearling Sale.

Hip 131 is a full-brother to the stakes-placed Swot Analysis and a half-brother to multiple stakes winner Free Drop Maddy (Free Drop Billy). The top three yearlings in the sale were all sold by Clear Creek Stud LLC, agent.

A total of 120 yearlings sold for a gross of $1,306,100, an average of $10,884 and a median of $6,000. There were 40 RNAs.

Followed by mixed session, two weanlings sold for a gross of $6,700 and an average of $2,350. One horse of racing age sold for $1,000 and 23 broodmares sold for a gross of $67,300 and an average of $2,926. The overall gross for the sale was $1,381,100.

Downtown Mischief Stays Unbeaten In Cicada

Downtown Mischief (Into Mischief) brought another stakes win home for super sire Into Mischief on Saturday afternoon at Aqueduct Racetrack. The New York-bred filly is now a perfect three-for three after her victory in the Cicada S.

Breaking her maiden on-track Jan. 14, the Linda Rice trainee won that debut by a sparkling 7 3/4-lengths at six panels and followed that up at Ozone Park Feb. 17 by clearing the next optional claiming hurdle in the slop by 1 1/4-lengths over the next-out winner, Midtown Lights (Redesdale).

Supported at the windows to the hilt, the 1-2 favorite tracked leader Fabulously Funny (Practical Joke) briefly from the fourth position down the backstretch, but decided to make her move for the front as Hot Little Thing (Army Mule) tried to make up ground after a slow start. As the trio dueled around the far turn, the chalk poked her head in front and past the eighth pole dug down to find enough in the end to win by 1 1/2-lengths over the late charging Tappin Josie (Anchor Down).

“I told Jose [Lezcano, aboard Downtown Mischief] that I thought the little filly on the inside of us had tremendous speed. She looked fast in the paddock. I was also a little concerned about the four-horse on the outside, but Jose had ridden her before and he said she's not that fast. I said, 'OK, you're going to be sitting second to the two.' And he said, 'that's probably where we'll be, sitting right outside.' It totally went upside down. The two doesn't break and then she comes rushing up through, but Jose is such a pro and he never loses his cool. When he needed to hold his ground, he did–and I think that makes a difference.”

Second dam Alpha Mama (Unbridled's Song) is a sister to GISW Marylebone, and she is also responsible for GSW Alpha Kitten (Tale of the Cat). The winner is Downtown Mama's first progeny, but she does have a yearling filly by Maclean's Music and was bred to Violence last year.

Anchor Down Moves To Iowa State University For 2022

Grade 2 winner Anchor Down will move to Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa for the 2022 breeding season, where he will stand for an advertised fee of $3,000.

The 10-year-old son of Tapit previously stood at Gainesway Farm in Kentucky, where he retired to stud in 2017. His oldest foals are 3-year-olds of 2021.

With two crops of racing age, Anchor Down has sired 22 winners and amassed combined progeny earnings in excess of $1.4 million. His six stakes-placed runners include Zia Park Derby runner-up Tesoro, Gulfstream Park stakes runner-up Lionessofbrittany, and Puerto Rican Group 2-placed Captured Prize.

Dr. Nikki Ferwerda, an associate professor of teaching at Iowa State University and manager of the school's horse farm, said ISU had bred to Anchor Down in the past, and their experience with the stallion and the ensuing foal made him a target to acquire.

“Anchor Down was my choice of the available sons of Tapit because he most closely resembled Tapit in appearance and because he appeared most likely to produce runners specializing in the sprinter/miler distance,” Ferwerda said. “The yearling by Anchor Down that Iowa State University consigned to the 2021 Fall Iowa Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association Sale was correct, elegant profiling, and prospective buyers frequently commented on her quality of movement. She reminds me a lot of her sire in terms of quality and stride.”

Bred in Kentucky by Gainesway out of the Grade 3-winning Orientate mare Successful Outlook, Anchor Down is a full-brother to Grade 3 winner Iron Fist and a half-brother to Grade 1 winner Sweet Lulu.

Anchor Down won five of 17 starts during his on-track career, earning $734,254. His resume is highlighted by victories in the Grade 2 Kelso Handicap and the G3 Westchester Stakes, along with a runner-up effort in the G1 Metropolitan Handicap.

“Locally, there is a lot of interest in breeding to produce horses that will race in the 6-8 furlong distance on dirt – which is exactly where Anchor Down was successful,” Ferwerda said.
