Uncle Mo Tops Coolmore Roster at $150,000 for 2023

Uncle Mo will once again top the Coolmore America roster at $150,000 for the 2023 breeding season, the same fee at which he stood in 2022, according to a press release from Coolmore Wednesday morning. The 14-year-old stallion was the sire of 10 black-type winners in 2022, including the GI Belmont S. winner Mo Donegal.

Justify, who had four black-type winners from his first crop in 2022, will stand for the farm's second highest-fee, at $100,000, the same as in 2022. He is currently the third-leading first-crop sire by earnings.

The largest jump among the Coolmore stallions comes for Munnings. With 13 black-type winners in 2022, including the GI Woody Stephens S. winner Jack Christopher, he gets a hike from his 2022 fee of $85,000 to $100,000 to become the co-second-highest fee on the farm.

American Pharoah, who was the sire of four GI winners in 2022, gets a trim from $80,000 to $60,000.

Mendelssohn, having a strong first year at stud and currently seventh on the first-crop sires list in North America by earnings, will see his fee drop from $35,000 to $25,000.

The farm offers three new stallions in 2023: Corniche, who will stand for $30,000; Preakness winner Early Voting at $25,000; and Golden Pal, whose post-Breeders' Cup retirement was announced Wednesday morning, and will stand alongside his sire, Uncle Mo, at a fee to be determined after the Breeders' Cup.

The entire roster, with fees for 2023, will be:

American Pharoah – $60,000

Classic Empire – $15,000

Corniche – $30,000

Cupid – $5,000

Early Voting – $25,000

Echo Town – $5,000

Mo Town – $5,000

Munnings – $100,000

Uncle Mo – $150,000

Violence Half To Lady Shipman Down to Debut in Japan

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Tokyo and Hanshin Racecourses. The 3-year-old fillies' Classics concluded with last Sunday's running of the G1 Shuka Sho and the colts' division finishes up this weekend with the running of the G1 Kikuka Sho, the Japanese St. Leger over a mile and seven furlongs at Hanshin:

Saturday, October 22, 2022
3rd-HSN, ¥13,400,000 ($89k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1800m
MATENRO EAGLE (JPN) (c, 2, Sharp Azteca–Doppia Vendetta {Brz}, by First American) is a son of a dual Argentinian group winner who was purchased by J S Company for $40,000 carrying this colt in utero at Keeneland November in 2019, having previously produced a pair of colts by Fast Anna. Doppia Vendetta is a half-sister to Brazilian champion 3-year-old filly Old Tune (Brz) (Wild Event). Like Sharp Aza Tack (5×4), one of three stakes winners for Sharp Azteca and a candidate for the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint, Matenro Eagle (5×3) is inbred to Quiet American. 3rd-TOK, ¥13,400,000 ($89k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1400m
DOUBLE JOKE (c, 2, Practical Joke–Double Date, by Rahy) is one of two in this heat for Godolphin and was acquired for $80,000 out of the 2020 Fasig-Tipton November Sale. The chestnut is out of a half-sister to Canadian Horse of the Year Peaks and Valleys (Mt. Livermore) and the late Alternate (Seattle Slew), the dam of GISW Higher Power (Medaglia d'Oro) and MGSW 'TDN Rising Star' Alternation (Distorted Humor), who passed away at Pin Oak Stud Oct. 15. Godolphin is also represented by its homebred FROST CITY (c, 2, Frosted–Texas Twirl, by Hard Spun), the first foal out of an unraced half-sister to MGSW & MGISP Cowboy Cal (Giant's Causeway). B-William Humphries & Altair Farms LLC (KY)

4th-HSN, ¥13,400,000 ($89k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1200m
JASPER ROYAL (c, 2, Violence–Sumthingtotalkabt, by Mutakddim) is the latest to make the races for his now 19-year-old dam, whose notable produce include GSW and GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint runner-up Lady Shipman (Midshipman), the dam of Golden Pal (Uncle Mo), who will be favored to repeat in the Turf Sprint at Keeneland in 16 days' time; and MSP Just Talkin (Midshipman). Jasper Royal cost trainer Hideyuki Mori $140,000 after breezing an eighth in :10 1/5 at this year's OBS March Sale. B-SF Bloodstock (KY)

JUZCAR (c, 2, American Pharoah–Blue Bahia, by Wildcat Heir) is a third-generation product for this breeder, who raced Blue Bahia to a pair of stakes victories and better than $317,000 before she produced this first foal. The bay, who carries Storm Cat 4x4x4 in his pedigree, was knocked down to Katsumi Yoshida for $380,000 at OBSMAR after covering a furlong in :10 1/5. B-Dennis Drazin (KY)

5th-TOK, ¥13,400,000 ($89k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1800mT
COLLECTANEA (c, 2, Collected–Dance With Kitten, by Kitten's Joy), a half-brother to recent dirt maiden winner Suetonius (Carpe Diem), gets his career started on the grass, and with good reason, as his dam is a full-sister to two-time GI Woodford Reserve Turf Classic hero Divisidero, who stands alongside Collected at Airdrie Stud. Dance With Kitten relocated to Japan in 2020 and is the dam of a yearling colt by Yoshida (Jpn) and a weanling filly by two-time Horse of the Year Kitasan Black (Jpn). B-Shadai Corporation (KY)

Three Horses Supplemented to KEENOV Book 1

Three horses, including a Grade III-winning juvenile filly, have been supplemented to Book 1 of the Keeneland November Sale.

  • American Apple (American Pharoah), a 2-year-old filly who won the Oct. 8 GIII Matron S. at Belmont at the Big A and is a contender for the Nov. 4 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint at Keeneland. KatieRich Farms consigns American Apple, who is cataloged as a racing or broodmare prospect.
  • Princess Julia (Distorted Humor), a daughter of champion Folklore, who is in foal to Medaglia d'Oro. She is consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent for STH LLC.
  • Wakanaka (Ire) (Power {GB}), a 4-year-old filly who won this year's GII Dance Smartly and was second in the GI Just a Game S. and the GI Ricoh Woodbine Mile. Cataloged as a racing or broodmare prospect, she is consigned by Bluewater Sales, agent.

Keeneland will accept supplements to Book 1 until the November Sale begins.

Pharoah Filly Pulls off Matron Shocker

KatieRich homebred American Apple stalked, pounced and pulled off a 47-1 upset Saturday in the Big A's GII Matron S. Fifth in a pair of main-track dashes at Churchill early in the season, the bay improved to be third in a two-turn Ellis turf event July 15. She resurfaced to graduate by a nose at Kentucky Downs going 6 1/2 panels Sept. 14, but earned just a 58 Beyer Speed Figure compared to the mid-to-high 70s many of the others here had run.

Away well, American Apple tucked in just behind the speed through splits :22.55 and :46.06. She worked off the fence to overtake aptly named longshot pacesetter Fleetfooted (Speightster) in upper stretch, kicked on near the eighth pole and fended off co-favored Redefined late to hold on by a neck. Danse Macabre, who finished one spot ahead of Redefined when second in Saratoga's Aug. 21 Bolton Landing S. before annexing the lucrative Untapable S. at Kentucky Downs Sept. 13, could only manage third after drafting behind American Apple early.

“I brought her up Wednesday and it seemed like she shipped up fine,” said trainer Daniel Leitch, who was celebrating by far the biggest win of his young career. “We took her to the track on Friday and she was feeling good. It seemed like she shipped up fine and we figured she would run big today. She had been eating up and doing everything right since we got here.

“I figured the two horse [Danse Macabre] would be right there the whole time. I told [jockeu] Eric [Cancel] to sit off the two and just make a run at her, just like she did at Kentucky Downs. Thank God Eric went on with her and just sat behind. I was kind of nervous when he went on the inside because I was hoping there was a hole. Thank God a hole opened up. Everything worked out.”

Leitch previously worked for trainer Ray Handal and under former KatieRich private trainer Mark Hubley along with duties such as foal watch, sales prep and breaking yearlings. He took over as head trainer for KatieRich last September.

“We didn't think we were 30-1, but we thought there were seven speed horses in there,” said owner Larry Doyle. “We knew what we had and it was going to be a tough race. We were only here because there was nowhere else to run. If there were an easier spot, that's where we would have been.”

Of his trainer, Doyle said, “Daniel Leitch has been working for KatieRich for 12 years. He's homegrown. When [trainer] Mark Hubley retired last year and turned the reins over to him, we had all the confidence in the world in him.”

Doyle said American Apple would be considered for the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint but could also return to New York for the Stewart Manor S. one day later.

Pedigree Notes:

American Apple becomes the 18th graded stakes winner and 31st stakes winner worldwide for Triple Crown winner American Pharoah. Broodmare sire Clever Trick, born all the way back in 1976, is now the broodmare sire of 29 graded winners–including American Apple's half-sister, four-time dirt route GSW and 2019 GI Kentucky Oaks third Lady Apple–and SW/MGSP half-sister Dr. Diamonds Prize. Another precocious MSW out of dam Miss Mary Apples produced GSW grasser Nootka Sound (Lonhro {Aus}), and another half to American Apple was responsible for SW/GISP near $600,000 earner Parlor (Lonhro {Aus}). Larry and Karen Doyle's KatieRich paid just $37,000 for Miss Mary Apples as a KEESEP yearling. She was a debut-winning juvenile at Keeneland in April of 2002, and finished second in the Fashion S. and GII Schuylerville S. on this NYRA circuit in her subsequent two outings.
