Belmont Park Meet Generates $632,208,251

The Belmont Park spring/summer meet generated $632,208,251 in all-sources handle, a 20.6% increase over the 2019 spring/summer meet and 63.5% above the 2020 spring/summer meet, which was abbreviated to just 25 days because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The spring/summer meet, which began Apr. 22 without spectators in attendance before reopening to a limited number of spectators May 1, boasted 59 stakes races worth $16.95 million in total purse money.

Average daily handle over the 48 days of racing was $13,171,005, a 20.6% increase over 2019. The abbreviated 2020 spring/summer meet saw average daily handle of $15,466,198.

This year marked the return of the GI Belmont S. to its customary spot on the racing calendar and its famed distance of 1 1/2 miles. In 2020, a readjustment to the stakes schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic saw the “Test of the Champion” run without spectators in attendance and as the opening leg of the Triple Crown series for the first time in history.

The June 5 Belmont Stakes Day card, highlighted by Essential Quality (Tapit)'s victory in the Belmont, generated all-sources handle of $112,725,278, a NYRA record for a non-Triple Crown year.

On-track handle for the 13-race Belmont Stakes Day card, which included eight Grade I races among nine total stakes, was $7,532,571.

A total of 454 races were run during the spring/summer meet including 243 on dirt and 211 on the turf. A total of 33 races were taken off the turf due to weather. Average field size over the 454 races was 7.6. This compares to 448 total races run in 2019, including 260 on dirt and 188 on turf. A total of 46 races were taken off the turf due to weather that year. Average field size in 2019 was 7.0.

A total of 248 races were run during the abbreviated 2020 spring/summer meet including 128 on dirt and 120 on the turf. A total of five races were taken off the turf due to weather last year. Average field size over the 248 races was 8.6.

Total on-track handle for the 2021 spring/summer meet was $49,343,664.

Stars And Stripes Day Card Generates $21.5 Million In Handle At Belmont Saturday

Saturday's 11-race Stars and Stripes Day card at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y., highlighted by an Irish-bred sweep of the $700,000 Grade 1 Belmont Oaks and $1 million Grade 1 Belmont Derby, generated all-sources handle of $21,535,076.

One of three graded stakes on the Stars and Stripes program, the Belmont Oaks kicked off the 2021 Turf Triple series on the female side, with the Saratoga Oaks and Jockey Club Oaks on the calendar for August 8 and September 18, respectively. Saturday's 43rd edition of the Belmont Oaks saw the Aiden O'Brien-trainee Santa Barbara storm to the lead late to best her five competitors.

In the Belmont Derby, an Irish-bred again rose to the occasion when Bolshoi Ballet stormed to an impressive victory for trainer Aidan O'Brien and a Coolmore ownership group including Michael Tabor, Mrs. John Magnier, Derrick Smith, and Westerberg.

Following the Belmont Derby, the Turf Triple for males will shift to Saratoga for the $1 million Grade 1 Saratoga Derby Invitational on August 7. The final leg of the Turf Triple for males is the $1 million Jockey Club Derby on September 18 at Belmont Park.

In addition to the Belmont Derby and Belmont Oaks, Saturday's card included the $150,000 Grade 3 Victory Ride, which was captured by Live Oak Plantation's Souper Sensational

Saturday's on-track handle was $1,923,650 and paid attendance was 3,574.

Aqueduct Spring Meet Generates All-Sources Handle of $85,419,050

The boutique 11-day Aqueduct spring meet generated all-sources handle of $85,419,050, a 2.2% increase over the 2019 Aqueduct spring meet, the New York Racing Association, Inc. announced Tuesday.

Average daily handle over the 11 days of live racing was $7,765,368, an 11.5% increase over 2019, when average daily handle over the 12 days of live racing was $6,964,947.

The 2020 spring meet at Aqueduct Racetrack was canceled in its entirety due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In accordance with New York State guidelines instituted to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, the 2021 Aqueduct spring meet was conducted without spectators and with only a limited number of owners and essential employees in attendance.

On-track handle, which includes wagering from New York residents utilizing NYRA Bets, was $5,734,531 compared to $9,987,247 in 2019.

Turfway Park Meet Concludes with 36.5% All Sources Handle Increase

A stout 36.5% increase of all sources handle, along with a rise in starters per race, topped Turfway Park's 38-day Winter/Spring meet that opened Jan 1. and concluded Saturday.

Turfway Park's meet saw overall handle grow to $81.7 million, a $21.9-million increase from 2020. All sources handle per day was up 32.9%. The average field size topped 9.8 horses per race compared to 2020's 9.7 starters per race.

“We can't thank our owners, trainers, jockeys and horseplayers enough for supporting our meet,” Turfway Park's General Manager Chip Bach said. “Our team put together a competitive racing product that appealed to horseplayers nationwide. The positive feedback from the installation of our Tapeta surface was universal from trainers and jockeys. Through Churchill Downs Incorporated's continued investment to renovate Turfway Park, we are looking forward to the future of horse racing in Florence.”

Jockey Gerardo Corrales (177-40-27-23; $655,831) had a 23% win clip during the meet and led all riders. Trainer Wesley Ward's victory with Like the King in the $250,000 GIII Jeff Ruby Steaks were among his 21 wins at the meet. Augustin Stable led the owner standings with eight wins through 20 starts.
