Alcantor Looks To Get Back On Track At Clairefontaine

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Wednesday's Observations features a returning 'TDN Rising Star'.

13.25 Clairefontaine, Cond, €34,000, 2yo, 8fT
ALCANTOR (FR) (New Bay {GB}) is moved up to a mile from six furlongs by Andre Fabre, having lacked the raw pace to deal with the subsequent G3 Prix de Cabourg third Havana Cigar (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) at Chantilly a month ago. That is no surprise given that Baron Edouard De Rothschild's TDN Rising Star is a half-brother to the G2 Oppenheim-Union-Rennen winner Boscaccio (Ger) (Mount Nelson {GB}) and this potential confidence-booster against four fillies will hopefully see him reiterate what a class act he looked on debut over seven at Saint-Cloud in June.

Observations: Ballydoyle Newcomer Takes The Eye In Curragh Opener

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Saturday's Insights features the son of G1SW Together Forever, the Justify colt City of Troy.

13.40 Curragh, Mdn, €20,000, 2yo c/g, 7fT
CITY OF TROY (Justify) looks a significant member of the contingent for this Barronstown Stud Irish EBF Maiden for colts and geldings, being the chosen Ballydoyle representative in a race used for the stable's past luminaries Rip Van Winkle (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), Gleneagles (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), Roderic O'Connor (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), Duke Of Marmalade (Ire) (Danehill), Horatio Nelson (Ire) (Danehill) and Australia (GB) (Galileo {Ire}). A son of the G1 Fillies' Mile winner Together Forever (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), the March-foaled bay is a full-brother to the stable's smart 3-year-old Bertinelli and a half to the useful War Front trio Military Style, Absolute Ruler and King Of Athens.

14.25 Newmarket, Mdn, £10,000, 2yo, f, 7fT
RACE THE WIND (IRE) (Too Darn Hot {GB}), one of two Charlie Appleby-trained newcomers in the line-up alongside William Buick's choice Dance Sequence (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), is a half-sister to the triple group 1 winner Cascadian (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) and the GI Summer S. scorer Albahr (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) from the family of Dubawi's Master Of The Seas (Ire). Dance Sequence, who due to riding arrangements may ultimately edge favouritism in the race won two years ago by Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}), is a descendant of Magnificient Style (Silver Hawk) whose most famous progeny was Nathaniel (Ire) who made his own debut at this track.

19.12 Chantilly, Cond, €34,000, 2yo, 6fT
ALCANTOR (FR) (New Bay {GB}), who earned a TDN Rising Star tag with a scintillating debut display at Saint-Cloud in June, is dropped back a furlong by Ande Fabre for more experience prior to being tested at Deauville next month. From the family of Treve (Fr) (Motivator {GB}), Baron Edouard De Rothschild's colour-bearer faces five rivals including the Saint-Cloud debut scorer Havana Cigar (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) representing White Birch Farm and Jean-Claude Rouget.

New Bay’s Alcantor Strikes For TDN Rising Stardom In France

Edouard de Rothschild's Alcantor (Fr) (New Bay {GB}–Bianca De Medici {GB}, by Medicean {GB}) was a picture of calmness during the extended preliminaries of Tuesday's Prix Chapeau Rouge at Saint-Cloud and exploded onto the scene with a rare display of authority to attain 'TDN Rising Star' status in taking fashion.

The seven-furlong contest has been used as a springboard to higher by others, most notably subsequent Group 1 winners Glen Shiel (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) and Arapaho (Fr) (Lope De Vega {Ire}). Alcantor is the second Rising Star for his sire (by Dubawi {Ire}), whose first was G1 Irish 2000 Guineas runner-up New Energy (Ire). He becomes the first juvenile winner of the campaign for Andre Fabre, who also nurtured Glen Shiel and Arapaho.

The €180,000 Arqana December graduate was swiftly into stride and comfortable on the lead throughout. Turning for home with a three-length buffer, the 11-5 favourite soon doubled his advantage without breaking sweat and was on cruise control inside the final quarter-mile, gearing down late to easily outclass Bateau Blanc (GB) (Kendargent {Fr}), himself a full-brother to G2 Derby Italiano hero Tokyo Gold (Fr), by a facile 2 1/2 lengths.

“I bought him as a foal in Deauville and he was raised at [Haras de] Meautry,” de Rothschild said. “We do so sometimes and we can compare our crop to others. He has been quite impressive, my first runner with [Bauyrzhan] Murzabayev in the saddle, and we were quite hopeful beforehand.” With no immediate targets on the horizon, and a seemingly patient approach intended, France Galop's President added, “There are no plans at this time, we feel the success is more the result of a true quality rather than precocity.”

Pedigree Notes
Alcantor is the seventh of eight foals and sixth scorer from as many runners out of a multiple-winning half to stakes-winning Hungarian champion Thunder Teddington (GB) (Halling). The March-foaled bay is a half-brother to G2 Union-Rennen victor Boscaccio (Ger) (Mount Nelson {GB}) and a yearling filly by Romanised (Ire). Descendants of Alcantor's third dam Trevillari (Riverman), herself a full-sister to G1 Prix Saint-Alary victrix Treble, include dual G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe heroine Treve (Fr) (Motivator {GB}), GI Shoemaker Breeders' Cup Mile S. third Tsigane (Fr) (Anabaa) and last year's G2 Moonee Valley Gold Cup victor Francesco Guardi (Ire) (Frankel {GB}). His fourth dam Trevilla (Lyphard) is an unraced half-sister to storied champion Triptych (Riverman).
