Equine Virus Outbreak Halts Racing At Century Mile In Alberta

Horse Racing Alberta, Alberta Standardbred Horse Association and the Century Mile Race Office are monitoring an equine virus outbreak at Century Mile Racetrack and Casino.

Our equine and human athletes' safety is our top priority, and we are working closely with official and on-site veterinarians and trainers at the track and training facilities. Century Mile Racetrack and Casino Infectious Disease Protocols have been ordered and the track is closed to horses moving on or off the property. These measures are in place to ensure that our equine athletes have the most up to date health and safety management protocols.

All affected horses have been placed and will remain in isolation with rigorous disinfection of stalls, tack and equipment for a minimum of seven days.
The isolated horses will continue to be assessed and treated by attending veterinarians.

Horses who were scratched on Nov. 19, 2021, have been placed on the Vet List and will not be cleared to race until they are removed from the Vet List by the Horse Racing Alberta Commission Vet.

Racing has been cancelled for Nov. 26 and 27, 2021.

We are cautiously optimistic that racing will resume Dec. 3, but further delays might be necessary for the health of the horses and control of the outbreak.

Alberta Standardbred Horse Association has recommended the following changes to the racing schedule:

Dec. 3, 2021: Regular race card, overnights only
Dec. 17, 2021: Eliminations for Western Canada Pacing Derby and Century Casinos Filly Pace
Dec. 18, 2021: Additional race day added to schedule
Dec. 31, 2021: Western Canada Pacing Derby and Century Casinos Filly Pace

Mank, Day Of Destiny On The Move In Alberta

Diamond S Performance Horses has announced that the Pulpit stallion Mank will stand the 2022 season in southern Alberta at Bar None Ranches Ltd. and the Distorted Humor son, Day of Destiny will be stand at Diamond S Performance Horses in Wildwood, Alberta.

Mank is the sire of the successful Alberta runners Dance Shoes ($63,317), winner of the 2021 Alberta Oaks and Common Knowledge ($53,892), winner of the 2020 Two Year Old Sales Stakes. Mank sold as a yearling for $290,000 at Keeneland and his dam, Stirring, is a Seeking the Gold mare who has produced four winners including Nowhere to Hide ($217,137). His second dam, Dajin is a full sister to Touch Gold ($1,679,907) as well as half-sister to Horse of the Year, With Approval ($2,863,540) and has produced 6 winners including Serenading ($538,754) and Handpainted ($435,406).

Mank will stand for $2,000 (Canadian) LFG from Jan. 15 through April 15 at Bar None Ranches Ltd. in Dewinton, Alberta and the remainder of the season at Diamond S Performance Horses in Wildwood, Alberta. Special consideration will be given to stakes placed and proven mares.

Day of Destiny is a winner of $132,678 with wins at 6 1/2 furlongs to one mile. He is by the leading North American sire Distorted Humor who has sired 159 black type winners and 69 graded winners worldwide with over $147 million in progeny earnings. The dam of Day of Destiny is the proven Kris S. mare, Sweet Lips ($565,138) winner of the Sunshine Millions Distaff and second in the Grade 2 La Canada Stakes.

Day of Destiny will stand for $1,200 LFG at Diamond S Performance Horses in Wildwood, Alberta. Special consideration will be given to stakes placed and proven mares.

Alberta Stalwart Cape Canaveral Pensioned From Stud Duty

Cape Canaveral has been pensioned from stallion duty at Highfield Stock Farm at Okotoks, Alberta.

Cape Canaveral has been one of the leading sires in Canada since 2008, and he has been the foundation sire at Highfield for 13 years. Cape Canaveral has 18 crops of racing age, 519 foals, 417 starters, 38 stakes winners, 304 winners of 1,046 races and earnings of over $17.5 million.

The 25-year-old is one of the last sons of Mr. Prospector standing in North America, and is out of 1990 Kentucky Oaks-winning mare Seaside Attraction. Cape Canaveral won his first start at two, and went on to win the Grade 3 San Miguel Stakes as a 3-year-old, winning three of four starts before his retirement. He has had an incredible influence on racing in Alberta.

“Cape Canaveral has been a great fit for our program, and has been an asset to racing in Alberta. His offspring are precocious, athletic and have a lot of speed, he definitely stamped them with his best qualities,” says Adrian Munro. “He's been a great stallion for us.”

Cape Canaveral has sired multiple Alberta champions, including Pearl of Knowledge, Onestaratatime and Capitalism. His progeny also helped Highfield Investment Group win leading breeder of Alberta-breds in 2010, 2013, 2015, 2016, and 2020. Cape Canaveral progeny remain strong at race tracks and sales in Alberta.

”For 13 years Cape has been the undisputed king of the farm, and he still has his paddock outside where he can keep an eye on things, and he will remain in the same stall in the stallion barn every night,” says stallion manager Jennifer Buck. “He's been a huge part of our breeding program and we've been blessed to have him. We wish him a long and happy retirement.

As a broodmare sire, Cape Canaveral continues to make his mark on racing. He is the sire of 72 dams of foals of racing age with 182 runners, 128 winners (52 percent) and 12 stakes winners.

Alberta Introduces Mare Purchase Incentive Program For 2022

The HBPA of Alberta Directors in agreement with CTHS of Alberta are excited to announce the following program to our eligible participants starting in 2022.

This program is open to Alberta residents who have purchased in the sales ring at a recognized public auction outside of the province of Alberta, a Thoroughbred mare in foal to a Thoroughbred stallion that will foal in 2022. The application can be obtained from the CTHS Alberta website: cthsalta.com. All applications to be sent to CTHS at jkruse@cthsalta.com.

The purchase price of the mare must be $5,000 or more. For the purposes of this program, purchases in U.S. funds will be considered at par, i.e., $1 USD = $1 CND. A reimbursement of 40 percent of the hammer price paid (not including any sales taxes), to a maximum of $5,000(CDN) is available to a qualified purchaser who meets the following conditions:

•Applicants must be an individual, corporation or a partnership;

•If an individual, the applicant must have been resident in Alberta for at least one year prior to the date of the purchase of the mare;

•If a partnership, all partners must be individuals that have been resident in Alberta for at least one year prior to the date of the purchase of the mare;

•Mares must be purchased in a sales ring at a recognized public auction held outside of Alberta. Mares who do not reach their reserve price or for which no bid is received, do not qualify;

•All mares purchased must have ownership transferred directly from the sales company to applicant and/or applicants (no third-party transfers of ownership in part or whole with the exception of using an agent). If an agent is used to purchase the mare, proof of formal appointment of the agent must be provided.

•The mare cannot be over 12 years old at the time of the purchase;

•The mare must foal in Alberta in 2022 and be bred to a Thoroughbred stallion standing in Alberta during the 2022 breeding season;

• Applicants must be the registered breeders of the foal produced by the purchased mare. No added or deleted breeders;

• If a mare aborts or otherwise loses her foal, the applicant will still qualify if the mare was confirmed in foal at the time of the purchase and is bred to a Thoroughbred stallion standing in Alberta during the 2022 breeding season. (A veterinary certificate will be required confirming that the mare was in foal at the time of the purchase);

• If the mare did not conceive when bred to a Thoroughbred stallion standing in Alberta during the 2022 breeding season, proof will be required that the mare was bred during at least two (2) estrous cycles. An attestation that this requirement has been met will be required from the stallion owner or stallion manager.

• The application deadline for the 2021-2022 mare purchase rebate will be July 1, 2022 with the approved rebate being paid to successful applicants by July 31, 2022. Since this program is limited to $100,000, there is a limit of two applications per individual, corporation or a partnership. In the event that the program is oversubscribed, one application per individual, corporation or partnership will be given priority before the second application will be considered.

• The Applicant accepts all other terms and conditions relating to the program, which may be amended from time to time, including the right to public disclosure.
