Invincible Spirit Colt Earns TDN Rising Star Tag At Deauville

Fresh from the high of Al Hakeem (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}) annexing Monday's G2 Prix Guillaume d'Ornano at Deauville, the in-form team of Al Shaqab Racing, Jean-Claude Rouget and Cristian Demuro was back in the winner's circle once more after the hitherto untried 2-year-old colt Beylerbeyi (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}–Gherdaiya {GB}, by Shamardal) unleashed a 'TDN Rising Star' performance in Tuesday's Prix de Vernon over 6 1/2 furlongs at the Normandy venue. Bowling along on the front end after a swift getaway, the 9-10 favourite held sway throughout and kept on powerfully under minimal coaxing once shaken up with 350 metres remaining to easily outpoint Piano Man (Fr) (Anodin {Ire}) by an impressive 2 1/2 lengths.

“He wasn't easy at the gates beforehand, but was very professional during the race itself,” said winning rider Cristian Demuro. “He has a lovely, huge action and quickens well. He will stay further and there's no doubt in my mind that he can go up in class.”

Beylerbeyi is the third foal and winner out of G3 Prix d'Aumale third Gherdaiya (GB) (Shamardal), herself a full-sister to G3 Prix des Chenes, G3 Diomed S. and G3 Earl of Sefton S.-winning sire French Navy (GB). His dam is also kin to G3 Sovereign S. victor Sea Lord (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}). The March-foaled homebred bay, who hails from the family of dual Grade I-winning sire Private Account (Damascus) and GI Beldame S. heroine Dance Number (Northern Dancer), is a half-brother to this term's Listed Derby du Midi runner-up Subahiyah (Ire) (Le Havre {Ire}) and a weanling colt by Le Havre (Ire).

Siyouni’s Al Hakeem Annexes The Guillaume d’Ornano

Bouncing back off a fourth in June's G1 Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly, Al Shaqab's homebred 3-year-old colt Al Hakeem (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}–Jadhaba {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) was all heart and regained the winning thread in Monday's G2 Prix Guillaume d'Ornano at Deauville. The January-foaled bay closed his two-race juvenile campaign with a breakthrough success at Chantilly and doubled his win tally back there on seasonal return before earning his black-type stripes contesting the May 3 Listed Prix de Suresnes at Chantilly in his penultimate start. The even-money favourite was a shade keen through the initial strides and settled into a smooth rhythm tracking the leaders in fourth for the most part. Looming large on the bridle turning for home, he seized a narrow advantage passing the quarter-mile marker and was driven out, despite drifting towards the far-side rail, to subdue the persistent G2 Prix Noailles victor Junko (GB) (Intello {Ger}) by a half length in game fashion. Lady Bamford's homebred G3 Prix de Conde runner-up True Testament (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) kept on well in the closing stages to finish 3/4-of-a-length adrift in third.

“He ran a very good race in the [G1 Prix du] Jockey Club, he's definitely a Group 1 horse and he will win a Group 1 one day,” insisted trainer Jean-Claude Rouget. “It could be this year or next year, so I hope he stays in training as a 4-year-old. This was a good race for him and he won easily in the end. He's a backward horse, but he's strong and I think the best is yet to come. I think he will stay a mile-and-a-half, but we'll see. I'll discuss plans with the Al Shaqab team and maybe the [G1 Prix de l'] Arc [de Triomphe is a possibility. He could go straight there, but I won't be alone in coming to that decision.”

Al Hakeem is the second of three foals and one of two scorers produced by G3 Prix Penelope placegetter Jadhaba (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who is one of six winners and the leading representative of GI E.P. Taylor S. third Naissance Royale (Ire) (Giant's Causeway), herself a half-sister to G2 Sun Chariot S. and G3 Musidora S. placegetter Spinnette (Ire) (Spinning World). Descendants of Spinette include stakes-winning GII Beverly Hills H. third Green Lyons (Ire) (Green Desert) and dual Grade III placegetter Tarrip (Green Desert). The January-foaled homebred bay is half to a 2-year-old filly by Kingman (GB).

Royal Ascot Is Next For Lusail

Dual group winner Lusail (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) is pointing to Royal Ascot, trainer Richard Hannon revealed on Tuesday. A start in the one-mile G1 St James's Palace S. or the six-furlong G1 Commonwealth Cup S. are both being considered for the Al Shaqab Racing colourbearer, as is the G3 Jersey S. Successful in both the G2 July S. and G2 Gimcrack S. last term, Lusail resumed with a second in the G3 Greenham S. in mid-April and was a close sixth in the G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on Apr. 30.

“We've put him in the St James's Palace S., the six-furlong race [Commonwealth Cup] and the Jersey S.,” said Hannon.

“It looked like he definitely got a mile at Newmarket, so you may well see him in the St James's Palace. I thought he ran a super race in the Guineas, I was delighted with him.

“I doubt [he will run again], he'll go straight there and at the moment it's looking like the St James's Palace S.”

Lope de Vega Filly On Top In The Cleopatre

Off the mark over nine furlongs at Fontainebleau Apr. 12, Al Shaqab Racing and Ballylinch Stud's Place du Carrousel (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) came through her first major test in style to annexe Friday's G3 Prix Cleopatre at Saint-Cloud. Bred to appreciate at least this 10 1/2-furlong trip, being out of the G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris winner Traffic Jam (Ire) (Duke of Marmalade {Ire}), the Andre Fabre trainee was held up in last early in contrast to her last outing when she was sent forward from the break. Nudged along by Mickael Barzalona to close at the top of the straight, the 23-10 favourite was produced wide to overhaul Samahram (Fr) (Sea the Moon {Ger}) and Kawida (GB) (Sir Percy {GB}) with 100 metres remaining and beat that duo by 3/4 of a length and a head respectively.

Rupert Pritchard Gordon, representing Al Shaqab in France, said, “When she won last time at Fontainebleau she jumped the pedestrian path after the finish line, unseated Mickael Barzalona and was knocked by the filly behind her that fell–it was a scary moment and she was given a few days off to recover,” he explained. “Lately, she was fine at home and pleasing in her work and she confirmed that today in good style. She was perfectly relaxed behind and she quickened brilliantly, so we have to be delighted. She is in both group 1s, the [May 29] Saint Alary [at Parislongchamp] and the Diane [at Chantilly June 19], and Andre Fabre will make the call.”

Place du Carrousel, who was a €260,000 purchase by Mandore International Agency at the 2020 Arqana Deauville Select Sale, is the first foal out of the aforementioned Traffic Jam who was also second in the G2 Prix de Pomone and is a half to the dam of the Australian group 3-placed Last Sight (NZ) (Showcasing {GB}). Her family features the G1 Racing Post Trophy runner-up Winged Cupid (Ire) (In the Wings {GB}) and the G1 Coronation S. and G1 Matron S. heroine Lillie Langtry (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), which links her to Galileo's Minding (Ire) and Empress Josephine (Ire) and Sunday's G1 1000 Guineas hopeful Tuesday (Ire). The dam has the 2-year-old filly Nariman Point (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), a yearling filly by Kingman (GB) and a filly foal by Sea the Stars (Ire).
