Sea The Stars Filly In Front as Yearling Season Concludes

NEWMARKET, UK–That's a wrap for the yearlings of 2022, with the late-season curtain-up for a fortnight of sales of all ages at Park Paddocks netting 4,501,500gns from the exchange of 130 fledgling racehorses.

Figures dipped a little from last year's slightly larger catalogue, but there was still plenty of money about for the 'right' horse, with a number of those towards the top of the list having missed an earlier engagement at Tattersalls for a variety of minor reasons. The average of 34,627gns was pretty much on a par with 2021 figures, but the median fell by 19% to 22000gns. The clearance rate dropped two points to 86%.

Combined tallies for the yearling sales of October and December weighed in at 204 million gns, a significant increase on the previous record for those fixtures of 167 million gns in 2018, and that doesn't take into account the latest addition to the Tattersalls yearling calendar, the Somerville Yearling Sale, which this year turned over 7.7 million gns.

Alex Elliott talked of paying a “Book 1 price for a Book 1 filly” and that was certainly the case for the day's leading light [lot 80], a filly by the Sea The Stars (Ire), who was bred by the Rogers family at Airlie Stud and consigned on their behalf by Whatton Manor Stud.

Elliott has been busy recruiting yearlings for Valmont this season, and this latest purchase took the juvenile team for 2023 to a total of 33. Ralph Beckett, who has sent out 11 runners for Valmont during 2022, will take charge of the full-sister to Fifty Stars (Ire), who was eventually secured with a bid of 260,000gns.

“She fitted the profile: she was a Book 1 filly but she missed out [on that sale] as she had a slight injury prior to Book 1, so she was a Book 1 filly in December and we had to pay a Book 1 price for her,” said Elliott, who noted that Valmont now has 60 horses in training.

“We had a good Sea The Stars filly this year called Trust The Stars, who won a Newmarket maiden, and she is hopefully going to be an Oaks filly, and that is the type of middle-distance, three-year-old profile we are looking for.”

He continued, “She was a foal share but she was bred by Airlie Stud and they are such good breeders and I love buying from them; they are so organic and they get such great results. The mare is in foal to Sea The Stars, she has a Sea The Stars foal, and she is going back to him so there's a lot to happen for us. Hopefully she is one that we can race and breed from in time.”

The filly, bred on the same cross as Oaks winner Taghrooda (GB), is a daughter of the Sadler's Wells mare Swizzle Stick (Ire). The unraced mare's most prolific offspring is the aforementioned Fifty Stars, whose major victories in Australia include the G1 Australian Cup, two running of the G2 Blarney S., and the G2 Ajax S.

Sea The Stars was also on the shopping list of Peter and Ross Doyle, who signed for lot 69, from Gestut Fahrhof, at 145,000gns. The colt out of the French listed winner Sequilla (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) could well be seen back in the same ring next spring as he was bought on behalf of breeze-up consignor William Browne of Mocklershill.

Emphasising the range of horses on offer at the breeze-up sales these days, this year's St Leger winner Eldar Eldarov (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) was a graduate of the Arqana Breeze-up Sale, and either that auction or the Craven were mooted as possible destinations for another Dubawi colt who was bought for 180,000gns by Yeomanstown Stud.

Lot 154, who was offered by his breeder Shadwell, is out of the Listed City of York S. winner Fadhayyil (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}), whose first foal Turaath (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) has won two stakes races in Australia, including the G2 Let's Elope S.

“Obviously he's by a top stallion and out of a very good mare,” said Yeomanstown's David O'Callaghan. “We don't get too many opportunities to buy this type so we said if he didn't make a silly price we'd step in. Thankfully he fell just within our range.”

Breezing is also on the horizon for the Frankel (GB) half-brother to the Group 3 winners Peace Envoy (Fr) (Power {GB}) and Our Last Summer (Ire) (Zamindar), who was picked up by Tally-Ho Stud for 130,000gns from the Glenvale Stud draft.

Yulong Investments has been a staunch supporter of the European bloodstock scene in recent years and its principal Zhang Yuesheng was a significant participant at last week's Goffs November Breeding Stock Sale when spending more than €5 million on mares to support the operation's young stallion Lucky Vega (Ire). Along with bloodstock agent Michael Donohoe, the the Yulong team was active again at the December Yearling Sale, snaring one of the earliest lots into the ring [6] for 155,000gns.

Offered by the Castlebridge Consignment for breeder Michael Enright, the dark brown colt is the first foal of the unraced Lady Corsica (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), a sister to GI Belmont Derby winner Deauville (Ire). The six-year-old mare was sold in the same ring two years ago for 310,000gns when carrying the colt.

Donohoe, who confirmed that the colt will go into training with Karl Burke, said, “I had previously bought the dam for client Michael Enright so I know all about her. I had seen [the colt] as a foal and a yearling, he was entered in Book 1 but was going through a growing stage then and was withdrawn.”

The Australian appetite for European bloodstock shows no sign of abating and Annabel Neasham, a regular buyer at the Horses-in-Training Sale, expanded her remit to add a December yearling to her export list from Newmarket. Agent Stuart Boman of Blandford Bloodstock conducted the bidding on behalf of the trainer and Nathan Bennett of Bennett Racing for lot 24, a Ten Sovereigns half-sister to Sibaaq (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}), who races for the same team in Australia and was picked up at Tattersalls last autumn. A four-time winner in the UK for Mark Johnston, the four-year-old is yet to win in Australia but has finished placed on four occasions.

“This is a bit of longer-term project,” said Boman after bidding 120,000gns for the Barton Stud-bred filly who is also a half-sister to Group 3 winner The Happy Prince (Ire) (Rip Van Winkle {Ire}). “Sibaaq has already won over half a million in prize-money. He has worked out very well and this filly has huge residual value.”

He added, “She was in the October Book 2 Yearling Sale, but did not make it due to a minor issue. It makes sense and we think Sibaaq is up to Group class in Australia.”

Mark McStay of Avenue Bloodstock stepped in to buy the Lope De Vega (Ire) half-brother to G3 Prix Paul de Moussac winner Azano (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) for 150,000gns for an undisclosed client. The colt [lot 113] hails from an Aga Khan family which includes Azamour (Ire) and The Autumn Sun (Aus) and was bred by Elysian Bloodstock.

A sole purchase on the day for the Hong Kong Jockey Club came for lot 112, a colt by Invincible Spirit (Ire) out of the Frankel (GB) mare Aspirer (GB), a Juddmonte-bred daughter of Prix de Diane winner Nebraska Tornado (Storm Cat) from this family of Irish Derby winner Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB}). Consigned by Norris Bloodstock for breeder Eric Chen, he brought the hammer down at 100,000gns.

Leading the day's pinhooks was lot 84, a colt by Harry Angel (Ire) bought for 26,000gns last year by David Hegarty of Hegarty Bloodstock and resold for 92,000gns to Richard Frisby. His dam Thankful (GB) (Diesis {GB}) has a clean sheet thus far from her six offspring to take to the track who are all winners, headed by the listed-placed Morning Post (GB) (Acclamation {GB}).

Action returns to sale ring at Park Paddocks at 10am on Wednesday with the start of  the four-day Tattersalls December Foal Sale.

Stauffenberg Secures Kingman With “Stallion’s Pedigree” For 550k At Goffs

Philipp Stauffenberg broke new ground at the November Foal Sale at Goffs on Wednesday by signing for a Kingman (GB) half-brother to Skitter Scatter (Scat Daddy) for a sales-topping €550,000 on a day where the Juddmonte-based stallion shined brightest.

The Airlie Stud-consigned colt is not just a half-brother to that 2018 champion 2-year-old filly in Ireland but also the promising Charlie Appleby-trained Victory Dance (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and the €550,000 it took to buy him represented a new record for Stauffenberg.

The fact that lot 727 boasted a stallion's pedigree provided Stauffenberg with the confidence to push on and buy the colt who brought the leading pinhooker's total spend at Goffs this year to over €1 million.

Stauffenberg said, “As the auctioneer said, he has a stallion's pedigree and I was actually the underbidder on the Dubawi (Ire) [Victory Dance (Ire)] as well. I think there is a lot of upside and, from what I hear, the Dubawi is going extremely well. They pushed him a little and thought he was a little bit earlier than he was. If he wins something nice next year, which you would hope he can, it will improve the page again. He definitely has a stallion's pedigree. It's a very good family and if Kingman (GB) comes up with a nice horse I'm not too worried.”

Asked if the significant outlay could make securing a pinhooking profit more difficult, Stauffenberg replied, “On one side, yes, but on the other, how many chances do we have to come up with something like him to go to war with next year? We spent a lot of money but hopefully we spent wisely. Sometimes it is more risky to buy one for €200,000. I think he was a no-brainer. I never gave this much for a foal before but I did underbid one for €1.2 million but didn't get her. She was the first crop of Frankel out of Finsceal Beo (Ire). This is the most expensive foal I've bought.

“Like all the others, he will come back to the farm. I will have to tell my staff that we have quite a valuable thing there. We treat everything the same and he will be raised like all the others then we will make a decision about where we are going, but I think it's an obvious decision about where we will go next year with him.”

Stauffenberg spent €1,113,000 on six foals at Goffs this week, including a Night Of Thunder (GB) colt (lot 601) for €280,000 who was offered from the Irish National Stud.

Asked if he was confident that the market would stay strong into the yearling sales next year, Stauffenberg replied, “Listen, who was confident this year? We were blown away with how well the yearling sales went and this is another thing with a horse like him; whether you are a high-end racing owner or someone looking for a stallion prospect, a horse like him will always have a value with his pedigree. I think you can be a little bit safer on that level than on a lower level. Whether I am right or not, we will know next year. I am happy to have him.”

The German-based operator was also happy to snap up the Night Of Thunder colt from the Irish National stud earlier in the afternoon.

On that acquisition, he added, “There aren't many Night Of Thunders on the open market and I've been very lucky with the sire already. I sold a filly by him in Book 1 to Godolphin who was an absolute queen so you could say I'm quite biased towards the sire. This was just an exceptionally good colt and I was keen to get him after missing out on one earlier today.”

That Night Of Thunder colt was owned by the Irish National Stud Mares Syndicate and the dam in question, Persona Grata (GB) (Sire Percy {GB}), a six-time winner including twice at listed level, was a relatively new recruit having been snapped up at Arqana December last year for €190,000.

Cathal Beale, CEO of the Irish National Stud, said, “This is the fourth year of the syndicate. A lot of the foals we are selling are in different syndicates. The Night Of Thunder was in the newest version. We bought four mares last year and, what we try to do is, there are 100 shares and we offer half of them out and we keep the other half. That's what we try to do. It's gone fantastically well.

“We had a Dark Angel (Ire) colt out of Nabeyla (GB) make €78,000 and now this Night Of Thunder colt makes €280,000. We have a Showcasing (GB) and a Mehmas (Ire) that we will sell on behalf of the syndicate as yearlings and the mares are back in foal to different stallions now as well.”

He added, “Hopefully we will try and produce some stakes winners along the way and appreciate the mares if at all possible. We want to try and continue to sell foals profitably. That's the game. We bought this mare for €190,000 at Arqana so, to get the price of the mare back already, you don't fully expect to do that in your first year.

“He was a smashing colt and he's gone to a great home. He will be reoffered and hopefully he can make a good profit for Philipp next year.”

Those sales stood out in an exceedingly strong sale. The aggregate was a whopping €15,242,500, up 27% on last year's figures, while the average jumped 22% to €88,619. The median also rose 16% to €58,000. Of the 203 foals offered, 172 were sold, which represented a clearance rate of 85%.

Juddmonte Snaps Up Half To Derby Contender

Just over a month on from Arrest's narrow defeat in the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud, Juddmonte paid a handsome compliment to their Derby contender by securing his half-brother by Wootton Bassett (GB) (lot 591) for €340,000 as well as a €530,000 Kingman (GB) colt (lot 606).

Arrest (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) went from strength to strength this season, ending his campaign with a head defeat to Dubai Mile (Ire) (Roaring Lion) in France, and can be backed at odds as big as 40-1 for next year's G1 Derby at Epsom.

Juddmonte's racing manager Barry Mahon said after the sale that parallels could be drawn between Arrest and his Swordlestown Little-consigned little brother.

Mahon said, “He's a half-brother to a good one. He [Arrest] was unlucky the last day to get beaten just a head in a Group 1 in France and the Abdullah family were particularly keen to buy him given how well the brother had done for them. I looked at him the other day and felt he was a very nice horse and that we'd be happy to have him. They gave me the confidence to kick on and buy him.”

Asked if there were similarities between the two, Mahon added, “They are both big strong-looking horses. This fella might be a little bit sharper than the brother but they are both good-sized, good-moving quality animals. It was an easy decision with how well the brother has done for us.”

The sale capped off a wonderful afternoon's work for Marriann Klay and Des Leadon of Swordlestown Little with their offerings by the sire as, not only did their homebred sell to Juddmonte for €340,000, but they also secured €280,000 for a Wootton Bassett filly (lot 565) from Tally-Ho Stud earlier in the day.

Des Leadon said, “Nisriyna (Ire) (Intikhab) is just fantastic. We're just so lucky to have her. She's a wonderful mare with a wonderful temperament and how exciting to sell a half-brother to what may be next year's Derby winner. It's not often you have horses like that and, in their own way, our two Wootton Bassetts in this environment as foals are as precious as the Alpinistas (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and Baaeeds (GB).

“These are collectors items and they don't come along very often. We feel very lucky to have Marvada (Ire) (Elusive City) for our very good friend and client Alan O'Flynn and to have Nisriyna ourselves. To have the support of Juddmonte, who have been wonderful to work with, has been brilliant and Nisriyna goes to Kingman next year. We have a Dark Angel in utero and we are very happy to work with such professionals within the industry and, in our own small way, to enjoy everything that it brings to us. It's a very special day.”

Asked what led to the decision to support Wootton Bassett, Leadon said, “Because he was here and that he had done so well. We wanted to use better and better sires because the mare had shown us what she could do. The accessibility of Wootton Bassett was a big factor in our decision.”

Wootton Bassett broke the €1-million marker on the day. The sire of this year's impressive G1 Vincent O'Brien National S. winner Al Riffa (Fr) had six foals sold for an aggregate of €1,345,000 on Wednesday.

On how the Nisriyna story began, Leadon continued, “Mariann and I rode out for John Oxx for many years. That's where we first met the mare. We bought her here in Goffs [for €2,000 in 2010] and tried to develop her as a broodmare from there. We can't do it without the raw material and these Aga Khan families are wonderful. John Oxx was so good with them and it gave us an insight into the thinking of elite stud farms like that and to John's wonderful assessment of horses.”

Kingman Reigns Supreme

Kingman reigned supreme at Goffs on Wednesday. Not only did he supply the top lot and the Roundhill Stud-drafted colt who was knocked down to Juddmonte for €530,000 but he completed the clean sweep when The Castlebridge Consignment's filly (lot 688) by the stallion was snapped up by Japanese buyers for €460,000.

Shingo Hashimoto, who has made the trip to Goffs in the past, signed for that Kingman filly on behalf of Katsumi Yoshida.

He said, “She has been bought to race in Japan. Kingman has done well in Japan and has a runner [Schnell Meister (Ger)] in a Group 1 there this weekend. She looked good and the pedigree is very strong. She is lovely. She has been bought for Katsumi Yoshida.”

Honora and Bobby Donworth of Roundhill Stud know a thing or two about selling big ticket items and, in lot 606, the second-highest priced foal of the sale, the perfect suitor was found.

Honora Donworth explained, “I'm so pleased he is going to Juddmonte. For me, that was everything. Everything. He's going where he should be going. We wanted to give it every shot in the world and the mare has been bred to Frankel so fingers crossed. There has been a good horse every year and it goes back to his grandmother who we bought in America. It's the most wonderful family.”

There were just three foals sold at the November Foal Sale at Goffs by Kingman and they filled the top three slots at an aggregate of €1,540,000.

No Nay Never Colt Commands 300k

Off the back of a memorable season, No Nay Never had his fee for 2023 increased by Coolmore to €175,000 and progeny by the sire proved popular on the day at Goffs with a colt (lot 602) selling for €300,000 from Rockfield Farm to Rockbank B/S.

A first foal out of Piece Of Paradise (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), who carried owner-breeder Michael O'Flynn's red and yellow silks to victory at listed level, the No Nay Never colt delivered on the high expectations that everybody at Rockfield Farm had for him.

Mitch Barry, the racing and stud manager at Rockfield, said, “It's great and we've always liked the colt, he's been a cracker from day one. When we came up here everything just clicked with him and he came out of his box every day and did everything perfectly. We couldn't be happier. He's been busy but I was humming and hawing whether he'd get to €300,000 but I'm delighted he surpassed that.”

He added, “We're big fans of No Nay Never, he's had a phenomenal season. The mare is in foal to St Mark's Basilica (Fr) and she's a beautiful mare. It's been a great family for Michael and all the O'Flynns and this is a great day for the farm.”

No Nay Never has had an exceptional year with Blackbeard (Ire), introduced on the Coolmore roster at €25,000, Little Big Bear (Ire) and Meditate (Ire) winning Group 1 juvenile races.

Five colts were offered by him on Wednesday, selling for an aggregate of €674,000 and an average of €134,000.

Philipp Stauffenberg Strikes For Kingman Colt At 550k

Another son of Kingman (GB) surpassed the €500,000 barrier when Philipp Stauffenberg of Stauffenberg Bloodstock bought lot 727, which was consigned by Airlie Stud. Knocked down for €550,000, the March foal is a half-brother to G1 Moyglare Stud S. heroine Skitter Scatter (Scat Daddy), listed winner and multiple group-placed Victory Dance (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and the GIII Jimmy Durante S. runner-up Data Dependent (More Than Ready). Under the second dam is the G1 Dewhurst S. hero Intense Focus (Giant's Causeway).

Dubawi Stars At Foal Sale Friday

NEWMARKET, UK–When there are two Dubawi half-brothers to Group 1 winners in a foal catalogue, the chances are that they will attract the attention of Sheikh Mohammed and go close to topping the sale, and that was exactly how it played out at Tattersalls on Friday.

First up (lot 939) was the half-brother to the Irish champion 2-year-old filly Skitter Scatter (Scat Daddy), brought to the sale from Ireland by his breeder Airlie Stud to head proceedings at 700,000gns. His price–100,000gns ahead of the top lot at last year’s sale–made him the second-most expensive colt foal to be sold at Tattersalls after the 2.5 million gns paid for Padua’s Pride (Ire), the brother to Derby winner Generous (Ire), in 1997.

“In all these decisions we are always trying to aim for quality,” said Anthony Stroud, who signed for the foal in the name of Godolphin. “He comes from a wonderful nursery in Airlie and obviously we absolutely love Dubawi. [The colt] was a very good-looking and athletic individual and both David [Loder] and I really liked him.”

Just a handful of lots later ( lot 944), Stroud was back in action in the freezing fog outside the ring, this time going to 600,000gns for the Dubawi colt out of Baisse (GB) (High Chaparral {Ire}).

This half-brother to Godolphin’s G1 Cantala S. winner Best Of Days (GB) (Azamour {Ire}) didn’t have quite so far to travel as he was born at Luca and Sara Cumani’s Fittocks Stud just outside Newmarket and consigned by them to the sale on behalf of his breeder Gerhard Schoeningh.

“He has been a star ever since he was born,” said Sara Cumani. “He’s just a complete charmer. He had Grade 1 x-rays and a Grade 1 scope and we are delighted he’s gone to such a good home. We’re also delighted that we are even able to be here at the sale.”

The colt’s dam Baisse, a listed winner in Germany and a full-sister to G3 Dee S. winner Azmeel (GB), is a permanent boarder at Fittocks and is in foal to Frankel (GB). She will visit Sea The Moon (Ger) next season.

The sole Dubawi filly in the sale (lot 954) , a daughter of listed winner and G2 Oaks d’Italia runner-up Joyful Hope (GB) (Shamardal), was bought by Andreas Putsch’s Haras de Saint Pair for 310,000gns. Her dam is a sister to Italian champion 3-year-old Crackerjack King (Ire) and a half to his fellow Group 1 winners Jakkalberry (Ire) (Storming Home {GB}) and Awelmarduk (Ire) (Almutawakel {GB}).

These may be troubling times but it was easy to forget the woes of the outside world on a bumper day of trade at Tattersalls. Certainly, racing has issues to face post-pandemic but pinhookers appeared not to be deterred by the events of 2020 with some bold plays in the ring throughout a busy session. A total of 64 foals have sold for six-figure sums so far this week, most of those being offered on Friday, when the clearance rate rise to 87%. That came from the sale of 189 weanlings for an aggregate of 16,341,000gns (-4%). The average and median declined slightly but not to an overly concerning degree, settling at 86,460gns (-14%) and 57,000gns (-12%), respectively.

Alkumait’s Brother To Juddmonte

While Sheikh Mohammed recruited a pair of colts by his star stallion, Prince Khalid Abdullah’s Juddmonte Farms did the same with a brace of Frankel (GB) colts.

Whitsbury Manor Stud’s half-brother to this season’s G2 Mill Reef S. winner Alkumait (GB) (Showcasing{GB}) was the more expensive of the duo at 550,000gns, with Simon Mockridge outbidding David Redvers for the son of Suelita (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}).

“He is an incredibly well-balanced and strong foal,” Mockridge said. “The mare has already produced two very good horses and she suited Frankel. This is the kind of animal that we are looking for. We struggled to buy yearlings, they were making a lot of money. We have got two by Frankel today so we are very happy.”

Whitsbury Manor’s Chris Harper bought Suelita as a 4-year-old from Tattersalls in 2013 for 21,500gns. Her first mating with Cityscape (GB) resulted in listed winner The Broghie Man (GB) and she has also produced the listed-placed Gloves Lynch (GB) (Mukhadram {GB}). Alkumait was 220,000gns Book 1 yearling when sold to Shadwell and his full-sister sold last month in Book 1 for 200,000gns to Creighton Schwartz Bloodstock.

“Dad bought the mare and she’s the only mare he has bought in the last seven years,” said Ed Harper. “From the very first foal she has thrown nice horses. In the February of his 2-year-old career I remember getting a phone call from Brendan Duke, who trained The Broghie Man, saying I think you’ve bred a very good horse here. He wasn’t wrong.”

He added, “I’m so pleased Juddmonte have bought the colt. It is going to be so satisfying to see him in the pink and green. I am delighted and I really appreciate the fact they have bought him. I have to thank my staff, too.”

Suelita wasn’t covered this year as her foal was born on May 10, but the Harpers are considering a return to their home stallion Showcasing.

Juddmonte also bought lot 882, the Frankel colt out of Group 3 winner Divine (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), for 260,000gns from Voute Sales.

Lope De Vega In Demand – Again

Following a season in which Lope De Vega’s yearlings sold for an average price of more than £180,000, the demand for his stock showed no sign of abating at the foal sale, with six sold throughout the week so far for an average of 210,000gns.

The full-brother to G1 Irish 2000 Guineas winner and young Irish National Stud stallion Phoenix Of Spain (Ire) was another to make the shortlist of Oneliner Stables and, at 300,000gns, is one of three foals bought by the Lowry family’s operation so far this week. Lot 854 was offered for sale by Newtown Stud on behalf of breeder Arild Faeste and his daughter Nina of Tourgar Bloodstock.

“He is very similar [to Phoenix Of Spain] in temperament and walk,” said Newtown’s Cathy Grassick, who was responsible for buying their dam, Lucky Clio (Ire) (Key Of Luck)–the first broodmare purchase for the Faeste family–at 17,000gns.

She continued, “They are unflappable, very athletic and that was what appealed about Phoenix. When he came to the sale he stepped up a gear and handled it really well, and so did this horse. I hope he is very lucky for the buyer, he is a lovely horse.”

Two of 11 purchases this week by Yeomanstown Stud were by Lope De Vega, including the half-brother to dual listed winner Khalid (GB) (High Chaparral {Ire}) at 260,000gns. The May-born colt (lot 878) was consigned by Church View Stables for breeder Spencer Chapman of Aston House Stud.

The current crop of foals were conceived when Lope De Vega’s fee was €80,000. He will stand for €125,000 in 2021.

Floors Stud Dispersal Continues

Lope De Vega also provided the highlight for the foal section of the part-dispersal of the stock of the Duke of Roxburghe’s Floors Stud when the colt out of Hibiscus (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) (lot 906) sold for 220,000gns, again to the team from Yeomanstown. His 7-year-old dam, who was a winner and listed-placed at three, is a sister to Godolphin’s G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf winner Line Of Duty (Ire) and a half to Onassis (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), who provided an update when winning the Listed October S. at Goodwood.

Seven foals were sold for the Duke’s family by Kiltinan Castle Stud for a total of 600,000gns, including an Invincible Spirit (Ire) filly (lot 905) from the family of Group 1 winners Magna Grecia (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and St Mark’s Basilica (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}). The daughter of Prance (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) was bought by Blandford Bloodstock for 155,000gns.

Warrior Leads The Charge

Saxon Warrior (Jpn) is heading the freshman sires at the sale with nine sold for an average of 96,889gns. They were led by his Norris Bloodstock-consigned daughter of Archangel Gabriel (Arch), an unraced full-sister to Grade I winner Prince Arch. Offered as lot 835 on behalf of her breeders Hunscote Stud and Chris Humber, the filly had many admirers, including underbidders Gerard Lowry and Philippa Mains, but it was pinhooker Philipp Stauffenberg who placed the final bid of 280,000gns from outside the ring.

“I’m happy and sad really as she was by far the best foal we’ve ever had through our hands,” said Hunscote Stud manager Andy Lloyd. “Chris is marooned in Guernsey and Steven [Smith, Hunscote’s owner] is in France but they’ve both been watching online and will be delighted.”

He added, “We had a runner at Doncaster the day Saxon Warrior won the Racing Post Trophy and I remember Ryan Moore saying then what a special horse he was. I followed him closely and of course he won a really good Guineas.

“Norris Bloodstock did a very good job with her and Jenny is such a pleasure to deal with.”

Archangel Gabriel, whose half-siblings include the G1 National S. winner Kingsfort (War Chant), has had two foals to race to date, both of whom are winners, and her Kingman (GB) yearling colt was sold for 350,000gns during October Book 1 to Kevin Ryan.

“Physically she was an absolute stand-out,” said Stauffenberg of the filly foal. “She has real quality.”

Hunscote Stud later reinvested in a foal by Saxon Warrior’s old sparring partner Roaring Lion, signing for lot 923, a Tweenhills-consigned filly out of the dual winner Great Court (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}).

Ringfort Caps Golden Year

Derek and Gay Veitch of Ringfort Stud brought 14 foals to Newmarket and sold 13, finishing on a starry sextet for Friday which included the Belardo (Ire) half-brother to G2 Gimcrack S. winner Minzaal (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}).

Concluding the draft as lot 919, the son of Pardoven (Ire) (Clodovil {Ire}) elicited plenty of interest and brought a final bid of 280,000gns from agent Alex Elliott.

“We had three nice foals there and they all sold really well,” said Derek Veitch of his final batch through the ring, including a Cracksman (GB) filly (lot 917) bought for 92,000gns by Brendan Holland. “Everybody seems resilient in our industry,” he continued. “It’s a very workmanlike sale for certain sires and certain pedigrees but if you have a nice horse it’s very strong. A lot of people have turned up  and it’s a different world here really.”

Throughout the summer, the Veitch family had plenty of excitement on the racecourse, even in a year when few people were allowed to go racing. Along with Minzaal, they also bred G2 Lowther S. Winner Miss Amulet (Ire) (Sir Prancealot {Ire}) and the G2 Flying Childers winner Ubettebelieveit (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), both of whom were placed in Grade I contests at the Breeders’ Cup.

“It has been a superb racing year and that has topped it all off really well,” Veitch said. “It’s nice to be able to have a bit of success on the track and then to bring some nice foals to the sales and everybody sort of expects to see them. I hope I can keep up my own standards now. It’s nice when people support you and I am very appreciative of everybody who does.”

Pardoven is now in foal to Footstepsinthesand (GB), another stallion who has been kind to Veitch as the sire of the 2019 Gimcrack S. winner Threat (Ire), another Ringfort graduate.

He added, “I’m not sure where she will go yet next year, but we’ll probably try to do something similar to the Minzaal cross and either go to Dark Angel or back to Mehmas.”

Alex Elliott, who bought the half-brother to Minzaal for Kia Joorabchian of Amo Racing, said, “We had Lullaby Moon by Belardo this year who won the Redcar Two-Year-Old Trophy and the Group 3 Prix Miesque; she will head to the Fred Darling next year and could be Guineas filly. I thought this colt was flawless, he vetted perfectly. He is a half-brother to the Gimcrack winner who showed phenomenal speed and is a very good horse.”

He added, “We stretched to buy this foal, but if he had been here as a yearling he’d have been even more. The dream when we buy anything is Royal Ascot, and we hope that in a few years’ time he will be one for there.”

Sweeney’s Worthwhile Trip

Irish ex-pat Harry Sweeney, the owner of Paca Paca Farm in Japan, has been busy across the last two days and is the leading purchaser at the sale with 11 foals bought for just shy of 1.5 million gns.

“It’s great to be alive and to be at a sale,” Sweeney said. “I’ve been locked down for nine months in Japan and I had to get permission from the government to be here and to return, but we’ve had some success here in the past. This year we’ve had two graded stakes winners in Japan who were both foal purchases.”

He added, “We’ve bought about ten and they will go off to Ireland to be reared before heading to Japan in late summer next year.”

Sweeney’s purchases included lot 858, a Lope De Vega half-sister to G3 Silver Cup S. winner Eagles By Day (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), out of the former classy stayer Missunited (Ire) (Golan {Ire}).

Joining Forces

Mimi Wadham and Violet Hesketh of WH Bloodstock teamed up with Kelsey Lupo’s Atlas Bloodstock to make two six-figure purchases on Friday led by lot 1002 at 285,000gns. The daughter of Sea The Stars (Ire) was bred by Dr Klaus Schulte and is out of the unraced Adlerflug (Ger) mare Amazone (Ger), whose previous offspring include Listed Dortmund St Leger Trial winner Apadanah (Ger) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}). The further family, which has its roots in Gestut Schlenderhan, includes Melbourne Cup winner Almandin (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}) and G1 Criterium International winner Alson (Ger) (Areion {Ger}).

The pinhooking trio returned swiftly for lot 1005, Trinity Park Stud’s Invincible Spirit (Ire) first foal of Hypothetically (Ire) (Medicean {GB}), a half-sister to Group 1-placed Lady Penko (Fr) (Archipenko). The relation to G1 Grand Prix de Paris winner Erupt (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) was secured for 140,000gns.

Joseph O’Brien bought the Zoffany (Ire) half-sister to his G1 Fillies’ Mile winner Pretty Gorgeous (Fr) (Lawman {Fr}) for 235,000gns. Bred by Frank Hutchinson and consigned by Norelands Stud, the filly is out of Lady Gorgeous (GB) (Compton Place {GB}), who is catalogued to sell as lot 1740 in next week’s mare sale.
