Pattern Race Success For Heart’s Cry In France

Aidan O'Brien trainee Continuous (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}–Fluff {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) notched a landmark score for his sire (by Sunday Silence) when snagging an Aug. 20 maiden over seven furlongs at the Curragh and maintained his perfect record with a battling success in a controversial renewal of Friday's one-mile G3 Prix Thomas Bryon Jockey Club du Turquie at Saint-Cloud. The eventual winner occupied a slot behind the leaders in third and was safely clear of trouble to his outer when British challenger Captain Wierzba (GB) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) parted company with Rossa Ryan at halfway, the rider having been shoved from his mount by Christophe Soumillon aboard Syros (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}). Rowed along to reduce arrears soon after turning for home, the 2-1 favourite Continuous was ridden to go second approaching the final furlong and kept on strongly under urging in the latter stages to prevail by 3/4-of-a-length from the subsequently demoted Syros. Soumillon was sanctioned with a 60-day ban Oct. 14 through Dec. 12) for dangerous riding, but will be permitted to take his booked rides at ParisLongchamp this weekend.

“It was a very good performance for a horse who had just run once to win a maiden,” commented Coolmore representative Hermine Bastide. “Aidan [O'Brien} was quite confident he would have no problems staying the distance. Looking at his pedigree on his dam's side, it suggested he'd be capable of handling soft going and Ryan [Moore] said the ground was okay for him. Aidan will talk to the owners and he could come back here for the [Oct. 22 G1] Criterium International.”

Continuous, half-brother to a yearling filly by Lord Kanaloa (Jpn) and a weanling colt by Wootton Bassett {GB}), is the third of five foals and one of two scorers out of a winning full-sister to G1 Moyglare Stud S. heroine Maybe (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}, herself the dam of G1 2000 Guineas-winning sire Saxon Warrior (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}). The March-foaled bay's dam is also a full-sister to dual Group 1-placed G3 Silver Flash S. victrix Promise To Be True (Ire). His stakes-winning second dam Sumora (Ire) (Danehill) is kin to G1 Oaks and G1 Preis der Diana (German Oaks) heroine Dancing Rain (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) from the family of multiple Group 1-winning sire Dr Devious (Ire) (Ahonoora {GB}).

Galileo’s Espionage A New Rising Star At The Curragh

A day after Ballydoyle had demonstrated the power of their 2-year-old reserves at Newmarket, Espionage (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) became the stable's 11th TDN Rising Star juvenile of 2022 in The Curragh's opening maiden on Sunday. Unlucky on debut when runner-up to stablemate and fellow TDN Rising Star Alexandroupolis (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) over an extended mile at Galway Sept. 6, the son of the G2 Ribblesdale S. winner Even Song (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) was sent forward by Ryan Moore dropping back to seven for this Williamhill.ie Irish EBF Maiden. Clear from two out on the far side, the 9-4 favourite had 1 3/4 lengths to spare over stablemate Sierra Blanca (Ire) (No Nay Never), a son of Alexandrova (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), at the line with another half a length back to the well-regarded Michael O'Callaghan trainee Djockovic (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) in third.

“He ran well the last day, when the other horse got up the rail and he had to come around,” Aidan O'Brien said of the imperious sire's 41st TDN Rising Star. “Ryan said he's babyish and when he got to the start he was a little bit anxious. He might go for something like the [G3] Killavullan or the [G3] Eyrefield at Leopardstown. We won't force him. He looks a middle-distance horse for next year and usually when you get a Galileo that wins over seven it bodes well.”

Even Song, who is a half-sister to the G1 St Leger and G1 QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares heroine Simple Verse (Ire) (Duke Of Marmalade {Ire}) and to the G2 Superlative S.-placed Maxentius (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), also has a yearling full-sister to the winner and a filly foal by Wootton Bassett (GB) to come.

Morny Middle Park Double For No Nay Never’s Blackbeard

Confirming the form of the G1 Prix Morny on Saturday, Ballydoyle's Blackbeard (Ire) (No Nay Never) dominated Newmarket's G1 Juddmonte Middle Park S. as The Antarctic (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) delivered a one-two for the stable. Not content with a haul that already included the G3 Marble Hill and G2 Prix Robert Papin as well as the Deauville juvenile feature, the 10-3 joint-second favourite tracked the fast pace set by the Morny runner-up Persian Force (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) and was coaxed to that rival approaching the furlong pole with Ryan Moore's body language telling all. Sent clear with mainly hands and heels, Coolmore and Westerberg's indomitable performer hit the line typically strongly to record a two-length verdict over his stablemate who had run third at Deauville. Persian Force faded to be third, 1 1/4 lengths away, with the 15-8 favourite Marshman (GB) (Harry Angel {Ire}) only fifth having raced too keenly early.

“He has been very progressive, always, he has been from day one,” Aidan O'Brien said. “He often has to make his own running, as they don't go quick enough for him but always in his work he quickens very well from behind and we saw that today. He takes his work easy and is thriving, he never backs away from it.”

“He throws himself around, but there is no badness in him whatsoever,” his trainer added. He just starts stamping his feet if we ask him to stand too long and is like that at home, but he is very straightforward you just don't ask him to wait too long. He's that kind of personality–he's forward-going and if he was a human being he would say 'listen, just let me at it'–he likes going forward. He's very fast–we weren't sure how far he'd go early on and I think speed is his thing. I wouldn't be sure how much further he would go, but we'll re-assess him after today.”

Of The Antarctic, O'Brien said, “He's progressed hand over fist and is doing very well physically. He's on the upgrade and the stalls thing is getting better too. Tom said he stepped a little bit slow away and he has been doing that a little bit.”

Blackbeard, whose career began in early April with a win in the Dundalk maiden won by another former stable luminary in Caravaggio, is the first foal out of Muirin (Ire) (Born To Sea {Ire}) who is a daughter of the G3 Phoenix Sprint S. winner Girouette (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}). She is a half to the dam of the G3 John Porter S. and G3 Zetland S. scorer Max Vega (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), while the family includes the G1 Prix de Diane heroine Mrs. Penny (Great Nephew {GB}) and the 1000 Guineas heroine Hatoof (Irish River {Fr}). Muirin also has a yearling full-sister and a colt full-brother to Blackbeard, with the former selling on Tuesday as lot 93 on day one of the Goffs Orby.

Saxon Warrior’s Victoria Road Notches Landmark Score In The Conde

Westerberg and Coolmore's 2-year-old colt Victoria Road (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}–Tickled Pink {Ire}, by Invincible Spirit {Ire}) earned his black-type stripes with a game win in last month's Listed Criterium du Fonds Europeen de l'Elevage at Deauville and continued his upward momentum with another narrow success, and a first pattern-race victory for his freshman sire (by Deep Impact {Jpn}), in Saturday's G3 Prix de Conde at Chantilly. The 19-10 second choice, who graduated at Gowran Park in his fifth attempt last month, was sharply into stride and settled off the tempo in seventh after the early shuffling. Taking closer order in the home straight, he came under a drive once leaving the quarter-mile marker behind and found extra inside the final 100 metres to edge Rashford (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}) by a neck nearing the line, the duo 3 1/2 lengths clear of the remainder headed by Nasomo (Ire) (Australia {GB}).

“We are delighted with the horse and delighted for Saxon Warrior as this is his first Group winner,” reflected Coolmore representative Hermine Bastide. “Ryan [Moore] says that the horse does the minimum, but hasn't stopped improving. He is a late foal, so that is a very good sign. He is in the [G1 Prix Jean-Luc] Lagardere, but that is over seven furlongs. I am sure Aidan [”Brien] will have a look at the programme and decide which race is best for the horse. He will most certainly be entered in the [G1] Criterium de Saint Cloud.”

Victoria Road, the lone black-type scorer for his dam, is one of five winners from many runners out of G3 Abernant S. and G3 Sandown Sprint S. victrix Tickled Pink (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), herself a daughter of multiple Group-winning G1 July Cup second Cassandra Go (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}). Tickled Pink is thus kin to three stakes performers headed by three-time Group 1-winning distaffer Halfway To Heaven (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), herself the dam of three pattern-race winners by Galileo (Ire) (Sadler's Wells). They include multiple Group 1-winning heroine Magical (Ire) and her dual Group 1-winning full-sister Rhododendron (Ire), the latter being the dam of last week's G2 Champions Juvenile S. victor Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}). Halfway To Heaven's half-sister Theann (GB) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}) is the dam of GI First Lady S. and GI Rodeo Drive S. winner Photo Call (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Cassandra Go is kin to G3 Coventry S. winner and G1 Irish 2000 Guineas runner-up Verglas (Ire) (Highest Honor {Fr}). Tickled Pink has a weanling colt by Ghaiyyath (Ire) to come.
