Classic Winner Kew Gardens Retired

Kew Gardens (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}-Chelsea Rose {Ire}, by Desert King), winner of the 2018 G1 St Leger, has been retired from racing and will enter stud next year under Coolmore’s National Hunt banner.

Bred by Barronstown Stud and raced by the Coolmore partners, Kew Gardens indicated an affinity for middle distances with a win in the 2000 metre Listed Zetland S. at two. He earned a first pattern victory in the G2 Queen’s Vase S. at Royal Ascot before successfully dropping down to a mile and a half in the G1 Grand Prix de Paris. He went back up in trip to best Lah Ti Dar (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the St Leger. Back for a 4-year-old campaign last year, his season was marked by a trio of runner-up efforts before he bested Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) by a nose in the G2 Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup.

Kew Gardens is out of the G1 Moyglare Stud S. winner Chelsea Rose, who has also produced the French Group 3 winner and G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest second Thawaany (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}).

“Kew Gardens is a big, good-looking horse, clear winded and an excellent mover,” O’Brien said. “He has a super mind and is extremely brave. He was a top-class middle-distance horse.”

Observations: Daughter of Massarra Debuts at The Curragh

4.15 Curragh, Mdn, €16,500, 2yo, f, 6fT
FRIENDLY (IRE) (Galileo {Ire}) was not foaled until May 15th, so improvement can be expected in due time but it is interesting that Aidan O’Brien has opted to go so soon with the 12th progeny out of the speedy Massarra (GB) (Danehill). All of her full-siblings Mars (Ire), Gustav Klimt (Ire), Wonderfully (Ire), Cuff (Ire) and Blissful (Ire) and her half-sister Nayarra (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}) were able to make their mark in black-type company at different levels and this chestnut relative of Invincible Spirit (Ire) needs close watching as she debuts against Moyglare Stud’s A Ma Chere (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), a Dermot Weld-trained daughter of the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas runner-up Mad About You (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}).

Ballydoyle Six Headed By Santiago In the Irish Derby

A field of 15 have been declared for Saturday’s G1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at The Curragh, with Aidan O’Brien responsible for six. The master of Ballydoyle’s main chances appear to be last week’s G2 Queen’s Vase winner Santiago (Ire) (Authorized {Ire}) and G2 King Edward VII S. runner-up Arthur’s Kingdom (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) in the largest field since 1977. Santiago has been done no favours by the draw, having been posted wide in 11 while Joseph O’Brien has a trio engaged headed by Scott Heider’s unbeaten G3 Gallinule S. scorer Crossfirehurricane (Kitten’s Joy). He too will have to navigate a high draw in 13, while Jim Bolger relies on the maiden Fiscal Rules (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}) who was fifth in the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas June 12 and exits stall five. In an unusual year where the Irish Classic precedes the G1 Investec Derby by a week, Aidan O’Brien is keeping Russian Emperor (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), Mogul (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) and Vatican City (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) back for Epsom. According to the Racing Post, Armory (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) has been described as a possible for the blue riband and also the G1 Prix du Jockey-Club July 5.

German Guineas the Focus on Sunday

Dusseldorf is the latest track to stage a European Classic on Sunday, with the 100th running of the G2 German 1,000 Guineas featuring an overseas challenger in the G3 Firth of Clyde S. and G3 Oh So Sharp S. winner Rose of Kildare (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}). Ninth in the G1 1,000 Guineas Newmarket June 7, the Mark Johnston raider encounters Gestut Karlshof’s No Limit Credit (Ger) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) who beat Gestut Ebbesloh’s Democracy (Ger) (Areion {Ger}) by a neck in the G3 Schwarzgold-Rennen at Cologne May 17. Litex Commerce’s Tabera (GB) (Gleneagles {Ire}), who was third in the G3 Preis der Winterkonigin at Baden-Baden when last seen in October, still has potential on her seasonal return.

After a week-long fest of Classic trials at Royal Ascot, Leopardstown picks up the baton with the G3 Irish Stallion Farms EBF Blue Wind S. in which Aidan O’Brien is represented by his Curragh maiden one-two by Galileo (Ire), Snow (Ire) and Salsa (Ire). Both are bred to make their mark in the Oaks, be it Epsom or the Irish equivalent, so it will be interesting to see how they fare against the likes of the proven One Voice (Ire) (Poet’s Voice {GB}). The latter was narrowly denied by the fellow Jessie Harrington-trained Silence Please (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) in Navan’s Listed Salsabil S. over this 10-furlong trip June 10 and is re-opposed by the third-placed Raven’s Cry (Ire) (Raven’s Pass). This race has an obvious pull on Dermot Weld and the five-times successful trainer puts forward a fascinating contender in Moyglare Stud Farm’s Amma Grace (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who beat the subsequent winner Roca Roma (Ire) (Australia {GB}) over a mile here in October.
