Anthony Van Dyck Denies Stradivarius in the Foy

Coolmore’s 2019 G1 Epsom Derby hero Anthony Van Dyck (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) was winless in seven starts, six of those attempts coming at the highest level, since registering that Blue Riband success and revelled in his old gusto to outbattle Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) in a pulsating renewal of Sunday’s G1 Qatar Prix Foy at ParisLongchamp. He lined up as the 19-5 second choice, coming back off a second to Ghaiyyath (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the June 5 G1 Coronation Cup at Newmarket and a fifth in Royal Ascot’s G2 Hardwicke S. last time, and led a steady tempo for the most part. He looked set to be swamped, but was up for a battle when tackled and headed by Stradivarius off the home turn, reclaiming the initiative with 300 metres remaining and staying on strongly under a continued drive to hold that rival’s renewed effort by short neck.

“We knew there was no early speed in the race and hatched a plan to move forward early,” revealed winning rider Mickael Barzalona. “We jumped off easily and I found myself in front, so I let him find a rhythm and go along bit by bit. I had a bit of trouble getting him to stretch out, but once he sensed the danger of Stradivarius he fought back gamely and found more with every stride. We know Stradivarius makes up ground easily, but sometimes gets caught for a bit of acceleration so I wasn’t too worried. I gave him a breather turning for home before winding him up and I think he enjoyed that. He has every right to a place in the line-up for the Arc as he gets into a good rhythm and just keeps galloping in a straight and true line.”

Owner Bjorn Nielsen has not discounted a tilt the Arc for his star stayer Stradivarius and said, “They have basically walked there and Frankie thought he should have gone in front. The race has turned into a sprint and we were only beaten a neck. To be beaten in such circumstances isn’t too much of a worry and certainly not a disgrace. I don’t know if he will run in the Arc, I need to speak with John [Gosden], but given how that race was run I wouldn’t rule it out. The ground conditions on the day will not play a huge part. He goes better on good ground, but can handle soft if needs be.”

Anthony Van Dyck is the fourth of five foals and one of three winners for G3 Blue Diamond Prelude victress Believe’n’succeed (Aus) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}), who also produced by G1 Railway S.-winning New Zealand champion sprinter Bounding (Aus) (Lonhro {Aus}) and a yearling filly by Galileo (Ire). His dam, full to MGSW sire Kuroshio (Aus) and the stakes-winning Agulhas (Aus), is a daughter of GI Alabama S. and GI Test S. heroine November Snow (Storm Cat). November Snow is a full-sister to GSW sire Scatmandu from a family featuring GI Carter H. hero Morning Line (Tiznow).

Galileo’s Mogul On Top in Paris

Third in York’s G2 Great Voltigeur S. last month, Coolmore’s G2 Golden Fleece S. and G3 Gordon S. winner Mogul (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) claimed the full set of pattern-race levels with a stunning victory at odds of 17-2 in Sunday’s G1 Juddmonte Grand Prix de Paris at ParisLongchamp. His two prior starts at the highest level yielded a fourth in last term’s G1 Futurity Trophy at Doncaster and a sixth in this year’s G1 Epsom Derby. He was hidden away in rear for most of the 12-furlong trip and inched closer along the false straight as his pacemaking stablemate Nobel Prize (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) signalled signs of distress. Making rapid headway along the fence in the straight proper, the eventual winner was not for catching once quickening for control when angled out with 300 metres remaining and stayed on strongly under a late drive to easily hold the running-on G1 Deutsches Derby hero In Swoop (Ire) (Adlerflug {Ger}) and G2 Prix Greffulhe victor Gold Trip (Fr) (Outstrip {GB}) by 2 1/2 lengths and a short head.

“Aidan [O’Brien] seemed quite confident before the race and told me that he was a horse that needed to be held up a bit, but had a huge turn of foot and that the longer I could wait the better as he doesn’t do too much in front,” explained winning rider Pierre Charles-Boudot after securing a third straight, and fifth overall, win in the event for O’Brien. “The pace was nice and constant and, turning in, I had a feeling that I was going to get a run down the rail. The horse just picked them off one by one and gave me his all to the line. Coolmore is one of the biggest breeding operations in the world and it is always a pleasure and honour to ride and to win for them. We will see if I get the ride on him in the Arc, it will be interesting.”

Europe’s Autumn showpiece could also be on the agenda for runner-up In Swoop, who delighted trainer Francis-Henri Graffard with a late rattle to finish second, but it’s by no means certain. “That was a great run and, before the race, I would have been happy with second place,” Graffard admitted. “We were worried that he might have been found out for a bit of speed, but he just keeps grafting away. Ronan [Thomas] knows him, he knows to keep after him and, just as I was hoping, he has finished off really strongly. Two weeks ago I would have never thought that he would have come here in such good condition. He takes his work well, I kept him going in strong work throughout the summer and he is very straightforward and willing. I think softer ground would play to his strengths. He holds an entry in the [G1] Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, the [G2] Prix Chaudenay and [G1] Grosser Preis von Bayern. I will have a discussion with the owners and we will come to a decision.”

Mogul is one of four pattern-race winners, all by Galileo (Ire), produced by Listed Pontefract Castle S. runner-up Shastye (Ire) (Danehill). He is a full-brother to Japan (GB), who won this event and York’s G1 International S. last year, MG1SP G2 Middleton S. victress Secret Gesture (GB) and G3 International S. winner Sir Isaac Newton (GB). His granddam is G2 Prix de Royallieu winner and G1 Gran Premio di Milano runner-up Saganeca (Sagace {Fr}),  who produced G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe-winning sire Sagamix (Fr) (Linamix {Fr}), G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud-winning sire Sagacity (Fr) (Highest Honor {Fr}) and G2 Prix de Malleret victress Sage Et Jolie (GB) (Highest Honor {Fr}), herself the dam of the G1 Prix d’Ispahan-winning sire Sageburg (Ire) (Johannesburg). Shastye has a yearling filly by Galileo (Ire) to come.

Ghaiyyath Still in Irish Champion Lineup

MG1SW Ghaiyyath (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) is one of 13 horses standing their ground at this entry stage for the G1 Irish Champion S. at Leopardstown on Saturday, Horse Racing Ireland announced on Tuesday. A final call on the Godolphin representative’s participation will be made on Wednesday. The bay has already racked up a trio of Group 1s this season-the Coronation Cup S. at Newmarket, Sandown’s Coral-Eclipse S. and last month’s Juddmonte International S. at York.

“Ghaiyyath will work tomorrow morning, we will have a final discussion then and if everyone is happy our intention is to fly to Dublin on Saturday morning,” said trainer Charlie Appleby.

He faces some stiff opposition, including Juddmonte International second and third MG1SW Magical (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and G1 Prince Of Wales’s S. hero Lord North (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), from the yards of Aidan O’Brien and John Gosden, respectively. French Classic hero Sottsass (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), who took the June 14 G1 Prix Gayan is also entered for Jean-Claude Rouget, while Godolphin’s MG1SW Barney Roy (GB) (Excelebration {Ire}) could also compete.

O’Brien also has G1 Investec Derby victor Anthony Van Dyck (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), MG1SW Japan (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), G1SW Magic Wand (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), G1SP Vatican City (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and MGSW & MG1SP Armory (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) entered at this point. Jessica Harrington has entered GSW Leo De Fury (Ire) (Australia {GB}) and Joseph O’Brien has the pair of MGSW Buckhurst (Ire) (Australia {GB} and Group 3 winner Degraves (Ire) (Camelot {GB}).

Serpentine On Song For French Return

G1 Investec Derby winner Serpentine (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) is on course for his first outing since that Classic upset in the Sept. 13 G1 Grand Prix de Paris, with the option of joining stablemate and likely favourite Love (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe thereafter.

“He had two quick runs leading up to the Derby–he’d only run the week before–and after the Derby he was a little bit quiet and a little bit tired and needed a little bit of time, but we always thought he was a very smart middle-distance horse,” said trainer Aidan O’Brien. “He has a busy next 10 days, so it will be interesting how it goes, but if we run him it will be a run to get him started and back, and then see where we go after that. But obviously a race like the Arc or something like that would be possible. Either way, we are hoping we will have him for next year.”

O’Brien revealed “everything is well” with the aforementioned Love in the wake of her most recent win in the G1 Yorkshire Oaks.

“We had it spaced out that there was a six-week gap from York to France, and that’s what we were very happy with,” the trainer said. “We got a chance to give her a couple of easy weeks, and then her programme would start building up again, and she’s back into her programme already–she’s very fresh. She’s doing nice canters at the moment, which she has to do to keep her right, because she gets very well and fresh in herself. Wayne [Lordan] rides her in all her work and he’s very happy with her.”

With Serpentine headed to Paris next week and a strong squad anticipated on the home front for Irish Champions Weekend, O’Brien’s riding squad will be well spread. The trainer noted he will be utilising some local riders for Doncaster’s St Leger meeting on the same weekend, including possibly Frankie Dettori for G1 Irish Derby victor Santiago (Ire) (Authorized {Ire}) in the Leger itself.

“We have spoken to Frankie, and he’s going to be there for the Leger, which is great for us, so hopefully he will ride some of ours,” O’Brien said. “We haven’t really discussed it, but I’d imagine that [using British-based riders] is what will happen because we’ll probably have a lot of runners here and we’ll need the lads here. The problem is if the lads go there they can’t do anything for the next two weeks after it.

“I’d imagine we’ll probably need them at home for that weekend, and we have Frankie and William [Buick], James [Doyle], Adam [Kirby] and Oisin [Murphy]–they’ve all ridden for us, and we’re delighted they’ve agreed to do that whenever we have needed them. I think we’ll be OK that way.”

Magical (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), meanwhile, is set to be among the headliners of the home team as she attempts to defend her title in the G1 Irish Champion S. She comes off a second to Ghaiyyath (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the G1 Juddmonte International and could be joined by the likes of Japan (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) at Leopardstown.

“We’d be delighted if [Ghaiyyath] did come over,” O’Brien said. “It was Magical’s first run back for an autumn campaign. We’d be looking forward to the race and it would be great for everyone if he did come. She ran in York and Ryan [Moore] was very happy with her and thought she might progress for it. She’s a hardy lady and gives her all. There is every chance she’d run a very big race.”
