Likely Favorite Love Withdrawn From Arc De Triomphe, To Target Breeders’ Cup Turf

With very soft going predicted for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe on Sunday, Oct. 4, trainer Aidan O'Brien has withdrawn the likely favorite Love from consideration, reports Sky Sports Racing. The dual classic winner will now be aimed at the Breeders' Cup Turf at Keeneland on Nov. 7.

“Sadly I don't think there's any prospect of the ground improving much,” O'Brien told skysports.com. “So we'll give her a little time now and give her a nice run in the Breeders' Cup. The plan is to have her in training next year, so that's something to look forward to.”

The 3-year-old daughter of Galileo, a Coolmore homebred, has won a trio of Group 1 races this year: the 1,000 Guineas, Investec Oaks, and Darley Yorkshire Oaks.

Breeders’ Cup New Aim For Love

After removing Love (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) from the G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe during Thursday’s final forfeit stage due to the deteriorating ground, trainer Aidan O’Brien confirmed Europe’s leading 3-year-old filly will target the Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland on Nov. 7 and is expected to stay in training at four.

“We had to make the decision today because there was no other stage after this,” O’Brien explained of the Arc call. “If Ryan [Moore] was declared to ride her he then couldn’t ride anything else [if Love was later taken out], so we had to make the decision today.

“It’s 4.1 on the penetrometer at the moment and there is a lot of rain forecast; it could get to 4.5 so we had to make a choice. Sadly I don’t think there’s any prospect of the ground improving much.”

Speaking to Sky Sports Racing later on Thursday morning, O’Brien said they will go with Love where good ground is more assured.

“It would be unusual if the ground came up good on Champions Day [at Ascot], it is usually soft or heavy so it would be wrong to carry on with her for another two weeks and then the same thing happen,” he said. “So we’ll give her a little time now and give her a nice run in the Breeders’ Cup. The plan is to have her in training next year, so that’s something to look forward to.”

Serpentine Supplemented To Arc

This year’s G1 Investec Derby winner Serpentine (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) was supplemented to Sunday’s G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe on Wednesday at a cost of €72,000. He was the lone supplementary entry to the €3-million race. In his first start since running away with the blue riband at 25-1, Serpentine finished fourth in the G1 Grand Prix de Paris over the Arc course and distance at ParisLongchamp on Sept. 13 behind stablemate and fellow Arc contender Mogul (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). They are part of a five-horse challenge for the Coolmore partners and Aidan O’Brien, with Love (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) holding sway as the race’s 11-4 second favourite.

With Serpentine supplemented, 16 remain engaged for the Arc. Rain has continued to fall in Paris, with as of Wednesday morning 14.4 millimetres having fallen this week. The going is currently very soft with more rain forecast.
