Boudot Picks Up Another Breeder’s Cup Winner With Longshot Order Of Australia; O’Brien Sweeps Trifecta In The Mile

Another jockey unable to ride due to COVID-19, another winner for Frenchman Pierre-Charles Boudot on Breeders' Cup Saturday at Keeneland.

Earlier this week it was announced that Christophe Soumillon would not be able to ride at the Breeders' Cup due to testing positive twice for COVID-19, and Boudot picked up the mount in the Mile aboard Coolmore's Order of Australia for trainer Aidan O'Brien. The 3-year-old son of Australia was listed at 30-1 on the morning line and hadn't made the main body of the field; he only drew in when One Master scratched from the race.

O'Brien had three horses in the race and the finished one-two-three, though it was the longest shot on the board at 73-1 who topped the trifecta. Order of Australia defeated his stablemates Circus Maximus and Lope Y Fernandez by a neck and by a length, respectively. He completed the mile over Keeneland's “good” turf course in 1:33.73.

Boudot won his first Breeders' Cup race with another pick up mount earlier on the card, with Audarya in the Filly & Mare Turf, and was delighted to win his second just a couple races later.

“It's just unbelievable,” Boudot said. “It's just a dream come true for me.”

Order of Australia was sharp at the break, and Boudot made the most of his outside post position by getting a clear run on the outside from fourth position. Circus Maximus was at the rail in fifth, while Lope Y Fernandez was further back in the field.

Up front, Halladay set unhindered fractions of :23.48 and :46.97 while a length clear of Factor This and Kameko. Halladay still held the lead turning into the straight, but Order of Australia had moved up to be in a three-way battle for second, essentially trapping Circus Maximus on the rail for almost a sixteenth of a mile.

By the time Ryan Moore got Circus Maximus angled out, Boudot and Order of Australia were already in gear and running down the frontrunner. At the finish, Order of Australia was a neck ahead of the stronger-finishing Circus Maximus, while Lope Y Fernandez came flying late to gain third over Ivar. Defending Breeders' Cup Mile winner Uni checked in fifth.

Bred in Ireland by Whisperview Trading Ltd., which represents O'Brien's wife, Order of Australia is out of the Danehill mare Senta's Dream, making him a half-brother to last year's Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf winner Iridessa (trained by Joseph O'Brien). Their second dam is Starine, the millionaire mare trained by Bobby Frankel to win the 2002 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf.

Order of Australia Blows Up Tote in the Mile

Order of Australia (Ire) (Australia {GB}) only drew into the race with the scratch of One Master (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) and needed a back-up rider when Christophe Soumillon was sidelined by a positive COVID test, but the 3-year-old overcame it all to lead home a one-two-three finish for Coolmore and trainer Aidan O’Brien in the GI Fanduel Breeders’ Cup Mile Saturday at Keeneland.

Off as a 73-1 outsider with Pierre-Charles Boudot picking up the ride from Soumillon, Order of Australia was able to get down into the three path after veering a bit outward at the break and sat within striking distance as Halladay (War Front) and Factor This (The Factor) eyeballed each other up front. Looming a threat turning for home, the bay sophomore took command inside the final sixteenth of a mile and withstood a late run from G1 Queen Anne S. winner Circus Maximus (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) for the victory.

“Aidan [O’Brien] was very confident before the race and he told me, ‘He is fast and he’s a proper horse for the mud and the good ground and he did it very well,” Boudot said after winning his second championship race of the day. “I took a good place just behind the pace. He travelled very nicely on the bridle and

when I ask him, he give me a very nice turn of foot.”

Earlier on the card, Boudot rode Audarya (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) to victory in the F/M Turf. It was another pick-up mount for the jockey after Ioritz Mendizabal tested positive for COVID.

“It’s a dream come true,” Boudot said of the double. “It is only by chance to get these rides and I’m sorry for Ioritz Mendizabal and Christophe Soumillon. It’s a difficult situation with COVID, but I was given two nice opportunities. I’m over the moon.”

It was the 13th Breeders’ Cup win for trainer Aidan O’Brien, but his first in the Mile and it was the second biggest upset in Breeders’ Cup history.

“It’s a real team effort, we’re very happy,” said Pat Keating, O’Brien’s traveling head man. “First three home is unbelievable. You need a lot of luck in this game. We’re lucky enough to have good horses and  good jockeys. I’m just happy for everyone involved.”

Order of Australia was fourth in the G1 Irish Derby and seventh in the G1 Prix du Jockey Club while still a maiden and he only won his first race four starts back at Dundalk Sept. 18. He followed up with an allowance win at The Curragh Sept. 27 and was a well-beaten ninth in a listed race in Kildare last time out Oct. 11.

Pedigree Notes:

The unraced Senta’s Dream is also the dam of last year’s GI Breeders’ Cup F/M Turf winner Iridessa (Ire) (Ruler of the World {Ire}). Order of Australia’s second dam is 2002 GI F/M Turf winner Starine (Fr) (Mendocino), who sold for $1 million at that year’s Keeneland November sale.

Order of Australia’s 2-year-old half -sister Santa Barbara (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) was tabbed a ‘TDN Rising Star‘ following a debut win at The Curragh Sept. 26.

Australia, winner of the 2014 G1 Irish Derby, is a son of two-time F/M Turf winner Oujia Board (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}). Order of Australia is his 12th graded stakes winner and his second Group 1 winner. His son Galileo Chrome (Ire) won this year’s G1 English St. Leger S.

O’Brien: Battleground ‘Very Like Found,’ Redemption-Seeking Magical ‘An Incredible Mare’

Trainer Aidan O'Brien's 10 Breeders' Cup hopefuls stepped out on the track at Keeneland for the first time on Thursday, and he later spoke to At The Races about some of their chances for Friday and Saturday's World Championship contests.

The likely favorite for Friday's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf will be Battleground, the 2-year-old first foal out of 2015 Breeders' Cup Turf winner Found. That edition of the World Championships was also held at Keeneland, so it would be especially poignant if Battleground could deliver a Breeders' Cup victory over the same course.

Thus far, Battleground has raced three times and won twice, including a win in his most recent start, the Group 2 Vintage Stakes at Goodwood on July 28.

“That day in Keeneland with Found was unbelievable,” O'Brien told At The Races. “(Battleground is) big, powerful, strong, and he's very like Found, his dam, and then he has this pace from War Front as well. So he's a horse we're looking forward to running.

“He's in good order and it looks like the time has done him really well. He hasn't ran since Goodwood, so you'd be very happy with him. Of course, it's going to be good experience for him and I think we're going to learn a lot about him. I think he's a horse maybe to really look forward to seeing what he's going to do.”

Additionally, O'Brien will send out 2018 Breeders' Cup Turf runner-up Magical in this year's edition of the $4 million contest. The seven-time Group 1 winner was defeated three-quarters of a length by champion Enable in 2018, and is in search of redemption in this year's contest.

The 5-year-old Galileo mare has won three Group 1 races this year alone and has not finished worse than third all season. Her victories include a 3/4-length triumph over Ghaiyyath in the G1 Irish Champion Stakes, a horse who was at that time considered the best in Europe this year.

“She's an unbelievable filly,” O'Brien told At The Races. “She's ran at the top level all the time, from the time she's a 2-year-old every year, she's danced every dance, traveled everywhere. She's very brave. She's very comfortable, really, from a mile to a mile and a half, which is very unusual. She's very brave, stays well, good mind. She's an incredible mare really.

“Everyone loves her and she's very special.”

European Breeders’ Cup Report: Gosden Trio In Good Form, O’Brien Trainees Take To The Track

John Gosden's trio of Breeders' Cup contenders were the first horses to leave the quarantine barn Thursday morning at Keeneland. Thady Gosden (assistant trainer to his father John) was at the training track to watch the horses train. The trio galloped two circuits of the training track.

Frankie Dettori rode Terebellum (Filly & Mare Turf) who reported the filly to be “all good, she's very well in herself.”

Daniel Harrap, who looks after Terebellum, reported: “she's done great since she arrived in Keeneland. She has eaten very well, her temperatures are good, and her exercise work has been very pleasing.”

Thady Gosden who flew into Keeneland yesterday said: “its great to be here, unfortunately my father won't be making the trip this year. The horses looked great this morning so we're all looking forward to the weekend now.”

Mehdaayih (Turf) was ridden by Andrea Pina who described the filly's workout as “very, very good.”

Lord North (Turf) was ridden by Benario Goncalves de Palva who once again showed great enthusiasm in his training with de Palva saying, “he's bouncing, in great form.”

Safe Voyage (Mile) went onto the training track by himself and did a very light canter. John and Sean Quinn were again trackside and Safe Voyage was ridden by Jason Hart.

Hart said: “He's in good order, we did a nice breeze yesterday so he's had an easy day today to freshen him back up.”

The Lir Jet (Juvenile Turf) did a strong canter for a circuit around the training track.

Trainer Michael Bell said: “that's perfect, he's ready to race.”

Siskin (Mile) went on to the training track under race day jockey Colin Keane. The two did a strong canter for 1 ½ circuits.

Keane said: “he's in great form, really pleased.”

Ubettabelieveit (Juvenile Turf Sprint) once again took the eye on the training track. Partnered by race day jockey Rowan Scott he had a walk around the track and then had a light canter.

His trainer Nigel Tinkler, who has made a great impression on the locals with his sense of humor, said: “Good, that's him spot on for tomorrow. Happy.”

Aidan O'Brien's 10 horses cleared quarantine Wednesday evening and went out on to the main track. They split into two groups of six and four. They did a canter of the main track before heading back to the barn.

Superstar filly Magical (Turf) looked incredibly calm taking in the surroundings.

Andrew Balding was trackside to see Kameko (Mile) along with Qatar Racing manager David Redvers.

Balding said: “I'm pleased to be here. I've had runners at Keeneland in the past so it is great to be back at what is a fantastic racecourse.”

Race day jockey Oisin Murphy said: “We breezed for four furlongs on the turf. The ground was lovely, just kicking the top off but it's fairly fast underneath. His lead changes were very natural. He never overexerts himself in his work, but he felt really good.”

Glass Slippers (GB) (Turf Sprint) was another to canter around the turf ridden by race day jockey Tom Eaves.

Trainer Kevin Ryan said he “couldn't be happier with her. She's really well in herself and Tom said she gave him a lovely feel.”

After exercise, a number of European horses went for a paddock school. They included Kameko, Glass Slippers and Ralph Beckett's Juvenile Turf contenders, Devilwala (IRE) and New Mandate (IRE).
