Lancaster House In Gladness Procession

Winless in three outings since registering a career high in last term's G3 Gladness S. at The Curragh, Gay Smith's Lancaster House (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) went postward as the 9-4 favourite for this year's TRI Equestrian-sponsored renewal and became the first back-to-back winner of the seven-furlong event with an impressive 2 1/2-length victory from Current Option (Ire) (Camelot {GB}). The 5-year-old bay followed up last year's triumph with a second over course and distance in the G2 Minstrel S., but was off the radar and failed to beat a single rival in both G2 Solonaway S. at Leopardstown and G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. at Ascot. Finding a modicum of cover in a midfield sixth for the most part, he loomed large out wide passing the quarter-mile marker and kept on powerfully once seizing control soon after to easily assert superiority.

“He's a very solid horse and it's a nice bit of ground which he likes,” commented trainer Aidan O'Brien. “Ryan [Moore] was very impressed with him and felt he had loads of horse. He made the running in this race last year and it was nice that he was able to drop in and get a lead today. He's very versatile and has won over nine furlongs in soft ground at Listowel and finished very well here. Ryan said we could look at the [G1] Queen Anne at Royal Ascot] and Lope Y Fernandez could go for the [G1] Lockinge [at Newbury].”

Lancaster House is the first of five foals, all by Galileo (Ire), and the lone performer out of MGSW GI Gamely S. runner-up Quiet Oasis (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}), herself a full-sister to G3 Prix La Rochette victor Young Pretender (Fr). His younger siblings include unraced 3-year-old filly Drummer Girl (Ire), unraced 2-year-old filly Yamato Nadeshiko (Ire) and a yearling filly. His fourth dam is G1 Irish Champion S.-winning matriarch Park Express (Ire) (Ahonoora {GB}), whose descendants include MG1SW sire New Approach (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), GSW G1 Champion S. runner-up Dazzling Park (Ire) (Warning {GB}), G1 Phoenix S. scorer Alfred Nobel (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) and G1 Epsom Oaks heroine Was (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

Love Targeting Mooresbridge

Last year's champion 3-year-old filly and dual Classic winner Love (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) is among the entries for Saturday's G3 Alleged S. at The Curragh, but trainer Aidan O'Brien has indicated that the chestnut is likely to wait for the G2 Mooresbridge S. at the same venue on May 3. Love's stablemate Broome (Ire) (Australia {GB}), a multiple Group 3-winning 5-year-old, is likely to deputize in the Alleged.

“Broome is likely to run in the Alleged at The Curragh on Saturday,” O'Brien said. “He's already had a run, and Love might wait for the Mooresbridge. It's a long year, and we might wait a bit longer with her.”

Love made seven starts at two in 2019, the highlight being a win in the G1 Moyglare Stud S. She stepped out just three times last year but won on each occasion at Group 1 level: the 1000 Guineas, Oaks and Yorkshire Oaks. Love was withdrawn from the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in October on account of the testing ground just prior to Ballydoyle's remaining runners defecting after a feed contamination.

While the British flat turf season officially kicked off at Doncaster at the end of last month, the real beginning takes place on Tuesday as Newmarket open their three-day Craven meeting. Any self-respecting fan of racing will feel that familiar warmth at the prospect of the fixture that hosts the Nell Gwyn, the European Free, the Earl of Sefton and of course the Craven itself. Tuesday's card has two longstanding race titles in the Alex Scott Maiden S. which gets the action underway and the Listed Feilden S. which pitches the year's Derby hopes against one another for the first time on English soil. The sharp and early juveniles get their chance in the British EBF Novice S., while the seven-furlong British EBF Conditions S. which follows may have a 2000 Guineas prospect in its midst.

Two that are entered in the May 1 Classic are Ballydoyle's Duke of Mantua (Ire) (No Nay Never) and Godolphin's Noble Dynasty (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), with the former coming here off a fourth as the topweight in The Curragh's Madrid H. Mar. 21 which has already produced the G3 1000 Guineas Trial winner Keeper of Time (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) and conditions scorer Erzindjan (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}).

In the Feilden, Michael Pescod's Fancy Man (Ire) (Pride of Dubai {Aus}) has to concede three pounds to all having won the Listed Ascendant S. at Haydock in September and he hails from the Hannon establishment which has done so well at this meeting down the years under Senior and Junior.

“He's been working very well,” the current incumbent of East Everleigh said. “I'm a little bit worried if the ground gets too quick as he's a big horse, that's all, but he needs a run and he had a good year last year. This is nine furlongs rather than a mile, but I think he'll get this sort of trip no problem.”

With Aidan O'Brien housing so many potential Derby contenders he has decided to cross the waters with the seven-furlong Curragh maiden winner Arturo Toscanini (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), while Charlie Appleby saddles the Polytrack-winning duo Highland Avenue (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Secret Protector (War Front). The latter has also captured the 9 1/2-furlong Meydan Trophy Feb. 11, while an intriguing renewal also features Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum's mile course maiden winner Royal Champion (Ire) (Shamardal) from the Roger Varian stable and Ahmad Al Shaikh's Youth Spirit (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) who was last seen finishing third to Battleground (War Front) in the G2 Vintage S. at Goodwood in July.

“He's a lovely horse and I'm really looking forward to getting him going,” trainer Andrew Balding said. “Obviously he'll come on a bit for the run, but he's in good shape for his first run of the season. He did have a niggle after Goodwood and we ran out of time, so we decided to leave him for the year.”

Bolshoi Ballet Stretches Ballydoyle’s Ballysax Tally

Providing Aidan O'Brien with an 11th winner of the G3 P.W. McGrath Memorial Ballysax S. at Leopardstown, TDN Rising Star Bolshoi Ballet (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) was comfortably in charge as Ryan Moore kept it simple in Sunday's Derby trial. Bogged down by testing ground when fifth in the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud in October having beaten this card's maiden winner O'Reilly (Fr) (Frankel {GB}) by four lengths eight days before at this track, the 2-1 favourite was the pick of the Ballydoyle brigade for this often-important early blue riband pointer. Settled second early with the pace non-exacting, he was sent to the front with two furlongs remaining and galloped strongly to the line to score by 2 1/4 lengths from Flying Visit (Ire) (Pride of Dubai {Aus}), with Taipan (Fr) (Frankel {GB}) a nose behind in third. “You'd be delighted with him as he only ran on soft ground and will have learned a lot today,” his trainer commented. “He'll probably come back here for the [G3] Derrinstown if all goes well with him. He's straightforward and, while you're never sure, he should get a mile and a half. He goes to the line well.”

Bolshoi Ballet is a full-brother to the stable's classy stayer Southern France (Ire), who captured the G2 Sandown Classic and G3 Irish St Leger Trial winner and was third in both the G1 English and Irish St Legers, and to the dam of the GII Miss Grillo S. third Editor At Large (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}). The unraced dam Alta Anna (Fr) (Anabaa) is a half-sister to the G3 Prix Penelope winner and G1 Prix de Diane runner-up Abbatiale (Fr) (Kaldoun {Fr}) and her full-sister Aubergade (Fr) who was listed winner who was second in the Penelope. Abbatiale produced the four-times group 3 scorer Bewitched (Ire) (Dansili {GB}), who was in turn responsible for the G3 Glorious S. scorer Pablo Escobarr (Ire) by Galileo and Oodnadatta (Ire) by his son Australia (GB) who was third in the G1 Moyglare Stud S. Abbatiale's half-sister Attachante (Ire) by another son of Galileo in Teofilo (Ire) is the dam of last year's G3 Dortmund Grand Prix winner Aviateur (Fr) (Intense Focus).
