UK AG Equine Teams With BGFC

The University of Kentucky Ag Equine Program's Wildcat Wrangler equine student ambassador team has selected Blue Grass Farms Charities (BGFC) as their agency of choice for the semester for community service.

Club members will host a 'canned food, cleaning and hygiene' drive from Feb. 14-25 and will be collecting 'springtime' toys for farm children to play with outside on sunny days.

“We cannot wait to start collecting donations and distributing them to the community while connecting with the equine industry,” said sophomore Jen Zimmerman, a 'Wildcat Wrangler' in the UK equine science and management program.

From Feb. 28 through Mar. 3, the Wildcat Wranglers will meet at the charity to deliver food from Lexington's 'God's Pantry' distribution center to area farms and plan on restocking and organizing the pantry. Farms participating include Mill Ridge, Dixiana Farm and Don Alberto.

“There are days when you just can't reach everyone,” said Julie Kwasniewski, director of BGFC. “But then there's outreach of love and support like this, which brings hope to our farm families who work so hard keeping the horse and land healthy and safe.”

The mission of the BGFC is to provide health and human services to those working in the Thoroughbred industry in Central Kentucky. The BGFC pantry is open Tuesday through Thursday.

UK Ag Equine Programs Launches Photography Contest

University of Kentucky Ag Equine Programs announces the launch of its first equine-oriented digital photography contest. Submissions will be accepted through Feb. 28. Students, as well as the general public, are encouraged to participate. There are three age divisions for submissions: youth (17 and under), UK students and open (18 and over).

UK Ag Equine Programs is looking for original photographs that capture horses in any discipline as well as photos that include horses interacting with people or in a farm landscape setting. Photographs will be submitted online via a Google form.

Entries will be judged by a committee of staff, students and trained photographers from March 1-5.

At the conclusion of the contest's entry deadline, each division's top three images will be published on the UK Ag Equine Programs' Facebook page for a “People's Choice Award.” Votes for the award will be determined by the number of likes that each image receives by 5 p.m. EST on Friday, March 12.

Prizes will be awarded to category winners of each age division and winners will have the opportunity to be featured in the program's monthly newsletter, The Wildcat Canter, and other UK publications.

University Of Kentucky Launches New Equine Research and Outreach Newsletter

The University of Kentucky Ag Equine Programs has launched a new monthly newsletter, the Equine Science Review, highlighting UK equine research and outreach efforts.

The free newsletter comes out mid-month from the UK College of Agriculture, Food and Environment, which is home to world-class research and service excellence in equine health, safety, nutrition, pasture and forages, economics, engineering, environmental compliance and many other areas of interest. Programs at UK offer the depth and breadth of scope that is fitting of its location in the heart of horse country.

“Reporting completed projects and exciting new knowledge is obviously important, but the Equine Science Review also enables new ideas and 'work-in-progress' stories to be shared,” said James MacLeod, UK Ag Equine Programs director and faculty member in the Gluck Equine Research Center. “Awareness of efforts at these earlier stages also has value, providing information on new and innovative approaches being used by students and faculty to address critical challenges. We might not have the answer yet, but such stories convey reasons for the equine world to look to the future with hope.”

The July issue of the Equine Science Review can be read via Issuu here or as a downloadable PDF here. Contents in the July issue include a story about promising developments in the quest to prevent catastrophic racehorse injuries through an mRNA study; a look at equine markets during the COVID-19 pandemic; an exciting report regarding an absence of any equine lepto abortion cases at the UK Veterinary Diagnostic Lab for first time in 30 years, which is likely linked to use of a new vaccine; pasture renovation information; advice about whether or not rained hay is any good and much more.

“I am very pleased to see the successful launch of the Equine Science Review,” said David Horohov, chair of the Department of Veterinary Science, director and Jes E. and Clementine M. Schlaikjer Endowed Chair and professor in the Gluck Center. “The ESR provides an excellent opportunity for faculty and staff in our college to reach out to our equine stakeholders, both professionals and horse enthusiasts, and inform them of our important work.”
