Tapit Leads Gainesway’s 2022 Stallion Roster At $185,000

Gainesway's 2022 stallion roster will be led by the world-renowned sire Tapit who will remain at $185,000.

Three-time Champion Sire Tapit is North America's leading sire of Grade 1 winners (27), Grade 1 performers (58), graded stakes winners (92), graded stakes horses (177), and stakes performers (284). Tapit continued to add to his historical resume throughout this past year.

Only months after Essential Quality won the Belmont Stakes to make Tapit the first stallion to sire four Belmont Stakes winners in over 100 years, Tapit took over as the all-time leading North American sire by progeny earnings. As a sire-of-sires, his top sons at stud include Constitution, Frosted and promising young sire Tapwrit. As a broodmare sire Tapit's daughters added another 3 Grade 1 winners in 2021, adding to an expanding list that already numbers 25 graded stakes winners.

The brilliantly fast McKinzie will stand for $30,000 in his second season at stud. Well supported in in his initial season the four-time Grade 1 winner bred 214 mares. Street Sense's best son McKinzie posted 11 triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures in a career that saw him win top level races at two, three, and four. Included in those Grade 1 victories was registering an impressive ¼ Ragozin in the G1 Whitney Stakes.

He is joined by Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile winner Spun to Run as Gainesway stallions expecting their first foals in 2022. Hailing from the influential Danzig sire line, Spun to Run showed remarkable speed during his 3-year-old campaign, collecting three consecutive triple digit Beyers and five times ran a “0” on his Thoro-Graph chart. Spun to Run will stand for $10,000 in 2022.

A $1.2 million yearling himself, Belmont Stakes winner Tapwrit has proven to be popular in the auction ring with nearly 20 percent of his first crop of yearlings bringing over 10 times his 2021 stud fee. Also having the most six-figure yearlings of any freshman sire at the Fasig-Tipton July Sale, Tapwrit's first crop is set to hit the track in 2022. A 2-year-old stakes winner out of the juvenile Grade 1 winner Appealing Zophie, Tapwrit will stand for $10,000.

Karakontie, standing for $10,000 in 2022, has continued to prove that he's one of the top third crop sires by percentage of stakes winners and graded stakes winners. A three-time Grade 1-winner, Karakontie's runners this year include dual-surface and multiple graded stakes winner Princess Grace and G2 Del Mar Derby winner None Above The Law, who has won four stakes on three different surfaces this year.

Anchor Down will stand for $5,000 in 2022. From limited books, the son of Tapit boasts 14 percent stakes horses in his first two crops of racing age. His top performers in 2021 include Grade 2-placed Captured Prize and stakes performers Lionessofbrittany, Swot Analysis, and Tesoro.

The Gainesway roster gains multiple Grade 1 winner Raging Bull in 2022 with the talented son of top international sire Dark Angel standing for $10,000 LFSN.

A $1.6-million earner, Raging Bull proved to be a consistently talented racehorse who competed at the top of his division over four racing seasons. He has made 18 consecutive graded stakes starts, winning or placing in nine of 14 Grade 1 events, including victories in the G1 Hollywood Derby, G1 Shoemaker Mile Stakes, and this year's G1 Maker's Mark Mile Stakes. Raging will be making his final career start in the Breeders' Cup Mile next month at Del Mar.

Gainesway’s 2022 Roster Led by Tapit

Gainesway's perennial leading sire Tapit (Pulpit–Tap Your Heels, by Unbridled) will once again head the farm's stallion roster and stud fees for the upcoming 2022 season. Tapit will remain at $185,000 live foal, stands and nurses. Currently among the top five North American stallions on the leading sires list of 2021, Tapit has three year-end leading sire titles and is North America's leading sire of Grade I winners with 27, Grade I performers with 58, graded stakes winners with 92, graded stakes horses with 177, and stakes performers with 284. Tapit leads all active sires in nearly every category, including progeny earnings of more than $175 million, which makes him the richest American stallion in history. He continues to scale new heights, with a record-tying fourth GI Belmont S. win this summer by 'TDN Rising Star' Essential Quality, who will be among the favorites in the Nov. 6 GI Breeders' Cup Classic.

Four-time Grade I winner McKinzie (Street Sense–Runway Model, by Petionville), who bred 214 mares in his first book in 2021, will also hold at his fee of $30,000 for 2022. McKinzie posted 11 triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures–more than 60% of his career starts-and won Grade I races at two, three, and four.

Also slated to see his first foals in 2022 is GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile winner Spun to Run (Hard Spun–Yawkey Way, by Grand Slam), who gets a fee reduction from $12,500 in 2021 to $10,000 in 2022.

Previously announced as new to Gainesway for 2022 is MGISW Raging Bull (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}–Rosa Bonheur, by Mr. Greeley), who will make his final career start in the Nov. 6 GI Breeders' Cup Mile. He will stand for $10,000.

Karakontie (Jpn) (Bernstein–Sun Is Up, by Sunday Silence), one of the top third-crop sires by percentage of stakes winners and graded stakes winners, will stand for $10,000 and will be joined in the Gainesway barn by two sons of Tapit in Tapwrit (Tapit–Appealing Zophie, by Successful Appeal) and Anchor Down (Tapit–Successful Outlook, by Orientate). Tapwrit, a $1.2-million yearling and GI Belmont S. winner, will have his first crop of 2-year-olds in 2022. Nearly 20% of his first-crop yearlings brought 10x his 2021 stud fee. Tapwrit will stand for $10,000. With his first crop of 3-year-olds this year, Anchor Down has 14% stakes horses and will stand for $5,000. Veteran Afleet Alex (Northern Afleet–Maggy Hawk, by Hawkster), who stands for a private fee, rounds out the Gainesway roster.

Tapit, Newcomer McKinzie Lead Gainesway’s 2021 Stallion Roster

Gainesway announced stud fees Oct. 21 for its 2021 stallion roster.

“It has always been Gainesway's goal to provide breeders with quality and value,” said Gainesway CEO Antony Beck. “The current economic climate that breeders are facing makes this more important than ever. Our stallion roster offers a diverse group of established stallions and exciting young studs who look to establish a new era at Gainesway.”

Tapit, a three-time champion sire, has solidified his status as one of the most influential and breed-shaping stallions of the last half century. North America's leading stallion by lifetime graded stakes winners (84), Grade 1 winners (27), and progeny earnings ($159,714,395) will stand for $185,000 in 2021. He is the only stallion to appear in the top five general sires list nine of the past 10 years.

In 2020, Tapit is represented by recent Grade 1 winners and Breeders' Cup hopefuls Valiance and Essential Quality. In the sales ring, yearlings by Tapit topped both opening sessions of Keeneland's September Sale, including the $2-million sale topper.

Among the nation's leading broodmare sires, Tapit is also cementing his legacy as a sire of sires. His top sons at stud include Constitution and Tapizar, plus promising young sires Frosted, Tonalist, Tapiture, and Tapwrit.

McKinzie, a brilliantly fast four-time Grade 1 winner, will enter stud in 2021. The son of Street Sense will stand for $30,000. A Grade 1 winner at ages two, three, and four, McKinzie posted 11 triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures during his career, as well as an impressive 1/4 Ragozin in winning the G1 Whitney Stakes. His seven graded stakes wins include four Grade 1 victories for career earnings of nearly $3.5-million.

Beck added, “I am excited about beginning this new chapter in the Gainesway stallions with McKinzie. His accolades on the racetrack speak for themselves with his brilliance and race record, I couldn't think of a better prospect to bring to Gainesway to compliment our champion sire Tapit.”

Karakontie, who has gotten off to a fast start at stud, will stand for $10,000. A three-time Grade 1 winner, including the 2,000 Guineas and Breeders' Cup Mile, Karakontie hails from the family of Kingmambo. A testament to his versatility and international appeal, Karakontie is represented by stakes horses in three different countries, including graded stakes victories on both dirt and turf.

His 2-year-old daughter, Spanish Loveaffair, is a Breeders' Cup hopeful following a win in this year's Sharp Susan Stakes and a runner-up finish in the G2 Jessamine Stakes at Keeneland in her last out. His 3-year-old daughter, Princess Grace, has won two of three starts and finished runner-up in the G3 Valley View Stakes at Keeneland Oct. 16. Karakontie also had a session-topping yearling sell for $500,000 at the Keeneland September Sale.

Tapwrit, a $1.2-million yearling purchase turned classic winner and stakes record setter, will stand for $10,000. Out of juvenile Grade 1 winner Appealing Zophie, Tapwrit is among the best bred sons of Tapit to ever enter stud. His much-anticipated first weanlings will be offered at the upcoming November Breeding Stock sales.

Tapizar, a Breeders' Cup-winning miler by Tapit from the family of champion filly Untapable, will stand for $10,000. Tapizar's graded stakes winners include the sensational racemare, Monomoy Girl, an Eclipse champion and six-time Grade 1 winner. His 2-year-olds sold up to $500,000 at this year's OBS March sale.

Rafael Hernandez Rides Five Winners, Sweeps Queenston, Eclipse Stakes At Woodbine

Leading jockey Rafael Hernandez swept the back-to-back stakes features as part of a five-win performance on Saturday at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario, with Halo Again a popular winner in $125,000 Queenston Stakes and Skywire pulling off a 17-1 upset in the $175,000 Eclipse (Grade 2).

Returning to the scene of his 2019 Coronation Futurity victory, Steve Asmussen trainee Halo Again delivered another winning performance on the road to The Queen's Plate (September 12), prevailing in the 65th edition of the $125,000 Queenston Stakes on Saturday afternoon.

With Hernandez aboard in the seven-furlong sprint for Canadian-foaled 3-year-olds, Halo Again pressed the pace three-wide through panels of :23.35 and :46.29 before eventually switching leads down the lane and drawing clear for the victory in 1:23.63.

Halo Again paid $4.70 to win as the 6-5 favorite. Golden Wave, who emerged along the rail with a short lead after the first quarter, stayed for second finishing 1 1/4 lengths behind, while Glorious Tribute headed See Forever for third another three lengths back. Dotted Line, Tecumseh's War, Deviant, Perfect Revenge and Ennis the Menace competed the order of finish.

“The main thing was putting him in a good position,” said Hernandez, noting the colt has matured since his juvenile campaign. “It was clear all the way. We've got a long backstretch. So he just broke good, kept him comfortable, clear and he did the rest. Turning for home, he switched leads. He's a big horse, he's got a nice heart, good stride. He's does everything good.”

After going two-for-two last year for owners Winchell Thoroughbreds and Willis Horton Racing, Halo Again was assessed as the 8-1 fourth choice in the 2020 Queen's Plate Winterbook. He opened his sophomore season in a pair of Grade 3 stakes events stateside, finishing eighth in the Lecomte in January and fourth in the Grade 3 Jeff Ruby Steaks last time out on March 14.

Bred by Anderson Farms Ont. Inc., the son of Speightstown and Halo's Verse was a $600,000 yearling purchase at the Keeneland sale. He is a half-brother to 2017 Wonder Where Stakes champion Inflexibility (by Scat Daddy), who was a top three finisher in both the Woodbine Oaks and Queen's Plate.

The most recent winner of both the Queenston Stakes and the Queen's Plate in the same year was Not Bourbon in 2008 for Hall of Fame trainer Roger Attfield, who also campaigned Norcliffe — the last horse to complete the rare Coronation Futurity and Queen's Plate double in 1976.

Skywire put Hernandez back in the stakes spotlight one race later as he hauled down the popular Josie Carroll trainees, Avie's Flatter and Mr Ritz, to spring a 17-1 surprise in the $175,000 Eclipse Stakes (Grade 2).

The Mark Casse trainee, who was the beaten favorite in last year's Queen's Plate, earned his first win since taking the Wando Stakes in April 2019 for owners Gary Barber and Lou Tucci.

Racing near the back the entire way while tracking Avie's Flatter along the rail, Skywire followed that foe wide turning for home in the 1-1/16-mile affair for older horses then hauled down the late leader in the stretch for the victory in 1:44.12.

The winner's stablemate, Uncle Bull, had set fractions of :25.16, :48.32 and 1:12.17 to three-quarters with 3-5 favourite Mr Ritz pressing the pace and Avie's Flatter stalking inside. Avie's Flatter tipped out three-wide on the final turn and took command in the stretch before Skywire came flying late on the far outside to finish 1-1/4 lengths in front. Mr Ritz held third while Journeyman, Uncle Bull, Solidify and Cooler Mike rounded out the field.

Overlooked by the betting public at 17-1, Skywire returned $36.10 to his backers while notching his fourth career win from 10 starts.

“You can't worry about [the odds] when you've got Casse in the race. He put him in there because he knows he belongs and he showed up,” said Hernandez, who noted the race set up perfectly as he was able to track Avie's Flatter the whole way while two horses set a good pace on the lead. “As soon as I put him clear, he just turned on and kept going.”

Bred in Ontario by William Graham, the 4-year-old Afleet Alex–Meandering Stream gelding helped Casse to successive scores in the Eclipse. Casse won this race in 2019 with Souper Tapit. He also trained the 2006 winner Arch Hall.

Hernandez, who concluded the 10-race card with five wins, picked up his second Eclipse title having also guided the Attfield-trained Are You Kidding Me to victory in the 2018 edition.

Live Thoroughbred racing continues, without spectators, on Sunday afternoon with a star-studded Fury Stakes for 3-year-old Canadian-foaled fillies headlining the 11-race card. Post time for the first race is 1 p.m., with the $125,000 seven-furlong stakes feature scheduled as the ninth race.
