Adlerflug’s Mythico Holds On For German 2000 Guineas Glory

Stall TMB's Mythico (Fr) (Adlerflug {Ger}) opened this season with a last-of-eight finish in ParisLongchamp's Apr. 11 G3 Prix Noailles before running second to Best of Lips (Ire) (The Gurkha {GB}) in Krefeld's Apr. 24 G3 Dr Busch-Memorial last time and took advantage as that rival floundered in Monday's G2 36th Mehl-Mulhens-Rennen (German 2000 Guineas) at Cologne to secure Classic glory in game fashion. The March-foaled bay had also finished behind Best of Lips when third in the Rhineland venue's Oct. 11 G3 Preis des Winterfavoriten and closed a four-race juvenile campaign with a first career success in Krefeld's Nov. 15 G3 Herzog von Ratibor-Rennen. Settling into a smooth rhythm under a firm hold in second after breaking on the lead, the 17-5 second favourite powered back to the front passing the quarter-mile marker and had established enough of an advantage in the closing stages to just hold the late rattle of Best Lightning (Fr) (Sidestep {Aus}) by a short head for a career high.

“He was in full swing entering the straight so I didn't dare try and hold him back,” said winning rider Rene Piechulek, fresh from victory in Sunday's G2 Diana Trial and substituting for the injured Maxim Pecheur here. “He responded well to everything I asked in the straight and just kept going. He began to falter in the closing stages and started looking about and shortening his stride. Luckily, we got across the line in just time.”

Mythico becomes the third Classic winner for his sire (by In the Wings {GB}) and is the third foal for Madhyana (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}). That dual winner's first produce is Mythico's full-sister Mythica (Ger), who finished second in both Listed BMW Preis Dusseldorf and Listed Kolner Stutenpreis, and she has an unraced 2-year-old filly by Zelzal (Fr), named Mythicara (Ire), and a yearling colt by Holy Roman Emperor (Ire) to come. Mythico's second dam, Listed Prix Solitude victress Madhya (Gone West), is kin to MGSP Listed Criterium du Bequet victor Wilki (Fr) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and a daughter of G3 Prix Chloe and GIII Noble Damsel H. winner Khumba Mela (Ire) (Hero's Honor), herself the leading performer produced by a daughter of G1 Prix Jacques Le Marois and G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp heroine Luth Enchantee (Fr) (Be My Guest).

In Swoop Back In Charge At ParisLongchamp

Building on a return second in the 12-furlong Listed Prix Lord Seymour at ParisLongchamp Apr. 18, last year's G1 Deutsches Derby hero and Arc runner-up In Swoop (Ire) (Adlerflug {Ger}) returned to the same course and distance to get back to winning ways in the G3 Prix d'Hedouville on Thursday. Settled in a share of third early by Olivier Peslier, the 1-2 favourite was wound up to take control with 300 metres remaining and score by a comfortable 1 1/4-length margin from The Good Man (Fr) (Manduro {Ger}). “He is so lazy he can cause you a lot of stress and you have to be after him, but we're delighted he won again,” trainer Francis-Henri Graffard commented. “We knew he'd come on a lot for his first run and is probably a little bit better on softer ground, so he did what he had to do today. He is in the [G2] Grand Prix de Chantilly and also in the [G1] Coronation Cup, so we'll discuss it with his owners.”

In Swoop's dam Iota (Ger) (Tiger Hill {Ire}), who collected the G1 Preis der Diana, is also the dam of his G1 Grosser Preis von Bayern-winning full-brother Ito (Ger) and the New Zealand group 3 scorer Igraine (Ger) by Adlerlfug's close relative Galileo (Ire). She is kin to the group 3 winner Illo (Ger) (Tertullian) and the G1 Preis von Europa-placed Ioannina (GB) (Rainbow Quest) and to the dam of the G2 Grosser Preis der Badischen Wirtschaft winner Itobo (Ger) (Areion {Ger}). Also connected to the G2 Mehl-Mulhens-Rennen winner Irian (Ger) (Tertullian) and the G3 Geelong Cup scorer and G1 Preis von Europa runner-up Ibicenco (Ger) (Shirocco {Ger}), her as-yet unraced 3-year-old filly by Australia (GB) is named Iffy (Ger) while she also has a filly foal by Highland Reel (Ire).

Adlerflug’s Alenquer Prevails In the Classic Trial

One of the lesser-fancied 3-year-old colts in the line-up for Friday's G3 bet365 Classic Trial at Sandown, M M Stables' Alenquer (Fr) (Adlerflug {Ger}) nevertheless emerged front and centre with no hint of fluke as he split the Godolphin duo of Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) and Yibir (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). Runner-up in the Listed Ascendant S. on soft ground at Haydock in September, the William Haggas-trained 25-1 shot was sent forward from the break by Tom Marquand and made certain that Yibir was unable to enjoy an easy time there. Attacking that rival three out with stamina assured as Adayar tried to emerge from a pocket back in the pack, the bay had first run on the imposing Charlie Appleby second-string and kept galloping relentlessly to score by half a length. Adayar, the race's major eye-catcher, had a neck to spare over his stablemate Yibir at the line. “He had only had two runs last year and the second was on horrific ground at Haydock, so he's certainly not the finished article yet,” Marquand said. “Every time he was joined, he fought back and is still learning. He'd never really had the chance to flatten out and run to the line before, so he's still quite raw. He's obviously got plenty of talent and promises to stay an extra couple of furlongs, but when he straightens out it might be that he shows us more speed than we thought.”

Alenquer had impressed when winning by 2 3/4 lengths on testing ground over seven furlongs at Newbury in August before meeting his match in the smart Hannon trainee Fancy Man (Ire) (Pride of Dubai {Aus}) in the Ascendant, but remained unexposed in what is widely-regarded as the best renewal of this Derby prep for some years. With the G3 Zetland S. scorer and 7-2 favourite Lone Eagle (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) 4 1/2 lengths back in fourth and the unbeaten Listed Criterium du Languedoc winner Belloccio (Fr) (Belardo {Ire}), the G3 Solario S. winner Etonian (Ire) (Olympic Glory {Ire}) and Ballydoyle's Sir Lucan (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) well beaten this stood up to its billing. It also comes in the month that the German bloodstock industry was hit by the early demise of Adlerflug, Germany's champion sire last year who was responsible for the talented In Swoop (Ire).

Charlie Appleby said of the second and third, “Adayar and Yibir have finished off their races well and I am very pleased with their efforts. Yibir has stuck at it all the way to the line, while Adayar stayed on well. They have put up two very solid performances and a step up in distance could be on the cards for both colts, who look nice middle-distance horses for the rest of the season.” Yibir's jockey William Buick added, “I'm delighted with him–he ran a great race and as last year he got better with racing I expect it will be the same this year. I loved the way he battled back and he'll definitely get further. The runner-up is a lovely horse too and I guess he could step up as well.”

Alenquer is the second foal out of Wild Blossom (Ger) (Areion {Ger}), who is a half-sister to the Listed Junioren-Preis winner Wilder Wein (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}). This is the family of the Hong Kong champion stayer Mr Medici (Ire) (Medicean {GB}) and group-winning top producers White Rose (Ger) (Platini {Ger}) and Wild Side (Ger) (Sternkonig {Ire}), with the latter being responsible for the G2 Park Hill S. winner and G1 Prix Vermeille runner-up Wild Coco (Ger) (Shirocco {Ger}). The dam's 2-year-old filly is by Zarak (Fr), while her yearling colt by Galiway (GB) was a €100,000 purchase by Haras de Meautry at the Arqana December Breeding Stock Sale.

Champion Sire Adlerflug Dead in Germany

Leading German sire Adlerflug (Ger) (In the Wings {GB}-Aiyana {Ger}, by Last Tycoon {Ire}) died shortly after covering a mare at Gestut Schlenderhan, Galopponline.de reported on Monday. Owned by studs Harzburg, Schlenderhan, Brummerhof, Gorlsdorf, Bona and Gregor Vischer, the 17-year-old, Germany's 2020 Champion Sire, stood for €16,000 in 2021.

A champion in Germany at three from 11-14 furlongs, Adlerflug saluted in the 2007 G1 Deutsches Derby, as well as the G1 Deutschland-Preis. Placed in an additional three Group 1 races in his native land and France for trainer Jens Hirschberger, he was retired to stud with a record of 11-4-2-2 and $908,322 in earnings.

From small crops, Adlerflug is the sire of 16 black-type winners, 12 of them at group level. His five Group 1 winners are Iquitos (Ger), Ito (Ger), Lacazar (Ger), In Swoop (Ire) and Torquator Tasso (Ger). The latter pair were first and second in the 2020 G1 German Derby, with In Swoop also running second in the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and G1 Grand Prix de Paris. Lacazar scored in the G1 Preis der Diana (German Oaks) in 2017. Another colt, French Group 2 winner Savoir Vivre (Ire), was runner-up in the Deutsches Derby in 2016. It is fairly early days yet for Adlerflug as a broodmare sire, but he does have one black-type winner in that sphere, German listed winner Apadanah (Ger) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}).

Adlerflug's second dam, the dual group-placed Alya (Ger) (Lombard {Ger}), is a full-sister to the dam of the Arc winner and breed-shaping matriarch Urban Sea (Miswaki).
