Grosser Preis Von Baden Glory For Torquator Tasso

Third in last year's G1 Wettstar Grosser Preis von Baden, Gestut Auenquelle's Torquator Tasso (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) was on top this time as he mastered the G1 Deutsches Derby hero Sisfahan (Fr) (Isfahan {Ger}) in a pulsating finale to Sunday's contest. Sent off the 9-5 favourite, the 2020 G1 Grosser Preis von Berlin hero who was runner-up in the most recent renewal of that Hoppegarten prize last time Aug. 8 raced in fourth early with Rene Piechulek content to wait off the steady pace. Delivered to tackle Godolphin's Passion and Glory (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}) approaching the furlong pole, he soon had that rival's measure before fighting off the attentions of the 3-year-old to score by a length, with 3 3/4 lengths back to the tiring Passion and Glory in third. There was a footnote to this edition, with the filly Pessemona (GB) (War Command) planting in the stalls and tailing off and the French challenger Millebosc (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) running out on the bend to the back straight and being pulled up.

Torquator Tasso, who had been denied only by In Swoop (Ire) (Adlerflug {Ger}) in the 2020 G1 Deutsches Derby before his third to Barney Roy (GB) (Excelebration {Ire}) in this, was seen out only twice more last term when winning the Grosser Preis von Berlin and finishing second in Munich's G1 Grosser Preis Von Bayern. Sixth on his return in the G2 Grosser Preis der Badischen Wirtschaft over 11 furlongs at Mulheim June 6, the bay bounced back with a 4 1/2-length success in the G2 Grosser Hansa-Preis der Baum Unternehmensgruppe at Hamburg July 3 before losing out to Alpinista (GB) (Frankel {GB}) defending his crown in the Grosser Preis von Berlin. Paying a handsome compliment to Kirsten Rausing's filly here, he can lay claim to being his country's leading middle-distance performer as a result and now has the ultimate prize in his sights.

Karl-Dieter Ellerbracke, owner of Gestut Auenquelle, said, “This was a very emotional victory, it was our first victory in this race following two seconds before with Gonbarda and Oriental Tiger. Torquator Tasso showed his class and will now run in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and will be ridden by Rene Piechulek again. If all goes well, he will also remain in training as a 5-year-old and eventually take up stud duties at our stud.”

The dam Tijuana (Ger) (Toylsome {GB}) is a half-sister to three black-type performers headed by the G2 Diana-Trial winner Tusked Wings (Ire) also by Adlerflug. The listed-placed third dam Turbaine (Trempolino) is kin to the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe heroine and remarkable producer Urban Sea (Miswaki), which links the winner to Galileo (Ire) and Sea the Stars (Ire) et al while the fourth dam is the legendary blue hen Allegretta (GB) (Lombard {GB}) who is related to Adlerflug himself. Tijuana's unraced 2-year-old colt Tijuan Hilleshage (Ger) is by Guiliani (Ire), her yearling is a full-sister to Torquator Tasso named Tiara Hilleshage (Ger) and she also has a colt foal again by Adlerflug.

German Derby Hero In Swoop Retired With Tendon Injury

German champion In Swoop (Ire) (Adlerflug {Ger}–Iota {Ger}, by Tiger Hill {Ire}), a winner of the 2020 G1 Deutsches Derby, has been retired from racing with a tendon injury, Equidia reported on Monday. Stud plans are pending for the Francis-Henri Graffard trainee.

The Gestut Schlenderhan colourbearer kicked off his career with a win at Lyon Parilly in May of his 3-year-old year and was third in the G2 Prix Greffulhe last June before his German Derby score. Second to Mogul (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G1 Grand Prix de Paris at ParisLongchamp in September, the Stall Ullmann-bred filled that spot again in the G1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe on Oct. 4. His 4-year-old bow was a second in a French listed race, before adding the G3 Prix d'Hedouville and G2 Grand Prix de Chantilly to his ledger. He was a last out fourth in the July 4 G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud. In Swoop, who had been pointing toward another Arc attempt, retires with a mark of 9-4-3-1 and $1,654,289 in earnings.

In Swoop is the eighth foal of his dam, who scored her biggest victory in the 2005 G1 Preis der Diana (German Oaks). Besides In Swoop, she has already produced German champion and G1 Grosser Preis von Bayern victor Ito (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}), the New Zealand Group 3 winner Igraine (Ger) (Galileo {Ire}) and the stakes-placed Iniciar (Ger) (Galileo {Ire}).

Although In Swoop's second dam was unraced, besides Iota, Iora (Ger) (Konigsstuhl {Ger}) had the German champion and Group 1 placed Ioannina (GB) (Rainbow Quest) and German Group 3 winner Illo (Ger) (Tertullian) to her credit.

Adlerflug’s Alenquer Prevails In King Edward Test

After Mohaafeth (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) had provided William Haggas with solace for having to watch the G1 Epsom Derby take place without his star colts, M M Stables' Alenquer (Fr) (Adlerflug {Ger}) also came to Royal Ascot to add further consolation in Friday's G2 King Edward VII S. There is no doubt he would have played a major role in this year's blue riband on the bare form of his defeat of Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) in the Apr. 23 G3 Sandown Classic Trial, but after a subsequent setback this was the path he was set upon and he duly regained all momentum in the 'Ascot Derby'. Always comfortable racing in rear in the rain-soaked ground, the 13-8 favourite was sent forward by Tom Marquand to tackle Tasman Bay (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) inside the final two furlongs and he was already in command as they passed the furlong pole. At the line, he had 1 1/2 lengths to spare over that imposing rival, with Title (GB) (Camelot {GB}) 2 1/2 lengths back in third. “When a horse does that, with a subsequent Derby winner behind, everyone expects a high level afterwards and he made my life easy,” the winning rider said. “William showed that patience is a virtue yesterday and it shows the wisdom he brings–they could have supplemented this horse and thrown him in the deep end in the Derby but instead came here and I think looking back in a few months time it will have been a blessing. On this ground, saving energy is key and I was really happy with the rhythm he found. The race opened out beautifully from the three and I always felt like I had plenty of horse to go for. It's onwards and upwards for him, I think.”

Alenquer, who was also second in the Listed Ascendant S. on testing ground at Haydock in September, could yet be Classic-bound according to Maureen Haggas. “He could easily be a [Sept. 11 G1] St Leger horse, but it's hard to know really,” she said. “He wasn't stopping here, so I think we will just see how it goes. He didn't do much wrong last year, but he was probably a bit immature still. He surprised us a little bit at Sandown, but he's more grown up this year. He's a bit of a boy at home, but at the races this year he's been really professional and focused and he's definitely going the right way.”

“I think he was a bit fresh though, a little bit keen the first furlong, but once Tom had him in behind and settled, he was great. To be honest, we didn't know whether the ground would suit or not, but this horse is German and German horses often go in the slow ground, so we thought we'd give it a go and find out. I think he is pretty versatile–just a thoroughly nice, tough, genuine horse and a good guy to have around. He's got a pretty good action on him–I wouldn't say he was ground-dependent.” William added, “He isn't in the [G1] Grand Prix de Paris, but we could go there. It is such a pain getting to France at the minute, but it's on July 14, so it's pretty good timing. We could supplement, because it's a good race. He's not a 'today' horse–he's very much for the longer term as well, so we've lots of exciting options.”

Sir Mark Todd said of Tasman Bay, “That was a super run. He is such a lovely horse–he is huge, with a massive stride. He is lovely to ride. He just got a bit keen early on, but when he kicked I thought he might have had it but the other horse just came at him. He is a beautiful mover and seems to act on anything.”

Alenquer is the second foal out of Wild Blossom (Ger) (Areion {Ger}), who is a half-sister to the Listed Junioren-Preis winner Wilder Wein (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}) and a granddaughter of the influential Waitotara (Ire) (Habitat). The second dam of Hong Kong's champion stayer Mr Medici (Ire) (Medicean {GB}) and the excellent producer Wild Romance (Ger) (Alkalde {Ger}), she is therefore the ancestress of the likes of the G3 Prix Miesque winner and G1 Preis der Diana runner-up White Rose (Ger) (Platini {Ger}), the G2 EuropaChampionat winner Wild Side (Ger) (Sternkonig {Ire}), her triple group-winning daughter Wild Coco (Ger) (Shirocco {Ger}) and the G2 Oettingen-Rennen scorer Vintager (GB) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}). Wild Blossom also has a 2-year-old filly by Zarak (Fr) and a yearling colt by Galiway (GB) bought for €100,000 by Haras de Meautry at the Arqana December Breeding Stock Sale.

Adlerflug’s In Swoop On Top at Chantilly

Fresh from a comfortable victory in ParisLongchamp's May 13 Prix d'Hedouville, last term's G1 Deutsches Derby hero and G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe runner-up In Swoop (Ire) (Adlerflug {Ger}) was obliged to work somewhat harder for success in Sunday's G2 Grand Prix de Chantilly. Gestut Schlenderhan's 4-year-old, who also ran second in September's rescheduled G1 Grand Prix de Paris, was settled off a sedate tempo in fifth–with just the slow-starting Nagano Gold (GB) (Sixties Icon {GB}) in arrears–past halfway in this 12-furlong test. Tanking forward to take closer order on the home turn, the 3-5 pick was nudged along for his challenge approaching the two pole and kept on strongly under continued rousting once gaining a narrow advantage passing the furlong marker to deny Prix d'Hedouville third Sublimis (Ire) (Shamardal) and last term's G2 Prix de Malleret victrix Vaucelles (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) by a half length and a neck.

“It was a tactical race as everyone could see and there was no pace or rhythm, which was definitely not in his favour,” said trainer Francis Graffard. “Olivier [Peslier] did well to cover all moves by going forward on the final turn and it was only then that I felt that he had everything under control. He'll never win in spectacular fashion or by a wide margin, but he's getting stronger and stronger. He's certainly more professional in all that he does, his last race did him the world of good and there is more to come. He's entered in all the big races and will head to the [G1] Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud and [G1] King George VI & Queen Elizabeth S. [at Ascot]. We'll give him a break after that and he'll come back for an autumn campaign with the [G1 Prix de l'] Arc [de Triomphe] in mind.”

In Swoop, half-brother to a 2021 Highland Reel (Ire) filly, is one of three pattern-race winners and the leading performer produced by G1 Preis der Diana (German Oaks) heroine Iota (Ger) (Tiger Hill {Ire}), who is also the dam of In Swoop's G1 Grosser Preis von Bayern-winning full-brother Ito (Ger) and Group 3 victrix Igraine (Ger) (Galileo {Ire}).
