Addeybb Bows Out On A High

No longer a force to be reckoned with in the major events across Europe, Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum's stalwart Addeybb (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) provided the deflated William Haggas stable with a much-needed boost on Sunday as he signed off with a hard-fought success in the G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris.

Haggas issued a statement after the race to the PA news agency which read, “I'm absolutely thrilled to bits and we would like to call it a day with him now. He's been a fantastic servant and it is wonderful he has finished on a high. So, we'll retire him now. He's been magnificent and has taken us across the world. He did us proud in Australia, he's won a Champion Stakes at Ascot, he's been a marvellous horse.”

Only sixth in the G2 Prix Dollar at this ParisLongchamp venue at the start of the month, the four-times group 1 winner was nevertheless shown due respect as the 17-10 favourite and quickly settled in the wake of Monty (Fr) (Motivator {GB}) under Tom Marquand. Left behind by that rival in the straight, the cause looked lost but the veteran responded to his rider's urgings to make up the deficit inside the last 50 metres and prevail by 1 1/4 lengths.

“Obviously, on heavy ground he is very effective, and we were keen to finish on a winning note. Now he has done we'll let him enjoy a wonderful retirement. He means a lot to the yard, he's been a friend to all of us. Kind, sweet-natured horse, just a lovely horse. This is just a great result today.”

A three-time winner at three, Addeybb registered his first group score at four when taking the Sandown's G2 bet365 Mile. The following season, he took the Wolferton S. at Royal Ascot and came back later that summer to annex the G3 Rose of Lancaster S. before rounding out the year with a runner-up finish behind Magical (Ire) in the G1 Qipco Champion S. Poised for the best season of his career, he returned at six to vanquish Australian star Verry Elleegant (NZ) in both Rosehill's G1 Ranvet S. and G1 Queen Elizabeth S. at Randwick. Runner-up in the G1 Prince of Wales's S. while returning to the Royal meeting, he bounced back to secure the Listed Doonside Cup before going one better than the previous season and landing the 2020 renewal of the Champion S. Returning Down Under for last year's Ranvet and Queen Elizabeth, he had to play the bridesmaid to Verry Elleegant in the former, but turned the tables narrowly in the latter. Given over two months off, the gelding was bested by St Mark's Basilica (Fr) in the G1 Coral-Eclipse S., and would only make one more start that season, finishing sixth in the Champion S. Earlier this term, Addeybb finished third in a pair of races at Sandown–the May 26 G3 Brigadier Girard followed by the Listed Gala S. July 1.

Addeybb was back in the blinkers that had been employed once only during his career, when dealing with Verry Elleegant (NZ) (Zed {NZ}) in last year's Queen Elizabeth S. For Marquand, his last ride on the 8-year-old was an emotive one.

“It's special–he took my career to a new level and we have been trying to get that spark back in him,” he said. “We were hoping he'd come and win and he's a real pleasure to have anything to do with. We've changed up his headgear a few times and it worked–the ground helped as well as the blinkers–he's been fantastic.”

Addeybb's dam Bush Cat (Kingmambo), whose other stakes performer was the GIII Generous S. third Meer Kat (Ire) (Red Ransom), is a daughter of the German listed scorer and G3 Royal Whip S.-placed Arbusha (Danzig). She is a full-sister to the G2 Goldene Peitsche winner Nicholas and to Danlu, whose descendants include the G1 Irish St Leger and G1 Gran Premio di Milano hero Strategic Choice (Alleged). This is the dam line of the US Fillies' Triple Crown heroine Shuvee (Nashua).

New Bay’s Bay Bridge Brilliant In The Brigadier Gerard

Sandown witnessed something truly special on Thursday evening as James Wigan and Ballylinch Stud's Bay Bridge (GB) (New Bay {GB}–Hayyona {GB}, by Multiplex {GB}) brought up a sensational 12th renewal of the G3 Coral Brigadier Gerard S. for Sir Michael Stoute. The way the seasonal debutante hit the line with five lengths to spare over Shadwell's exciting Mostahdaf (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), who was previously unbeaten here, with Addeybb (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) another length away in third, it is hard to say that any of the former Freemason Lodge winners of this vital 10-furlong staging post have been any more impressive.

Finally unveiled after a winter under wraps, the Listed James Seymour S. winner who had only hinted at his deep talent in 2021 was the subject of a notable gamble into 7-4 second favouritism with Ryan Moore keen to hold on to him in fourth early. Moving to the the 6-5 favourite Mostahdaf with unerring ease approaching the furlong pole, the bay set off to the line with minimal encouragement to spreadeagle a class field. “We thought there was something special in him last year and Ballylinch bought into him in the winter,” James Wigan commented. “We have always thought a lot of him and Sir Michael's been very complimentary about him, so it is a very nice surprise. He is such a big strong boy and we rather thought in the paddock that he might just need the race, so we are particularly pleased.”

Attempts to dampen enthusiasm for this display could centre around the fact that Mostahdaf was carrying a three-pound penalty for a win in the G3 Gordon Richards S. and that Addeybb was coming back from a lengthy spell out due to serious illness, but Bay Bridge was himself operating under a mix of inexperience and rustiness that should have curtailed something this impressive. Brought along quietly last term, he broke his maiden first up and at the third career attempt by five lengths over this trip on Newcastle's Tapeta in April but sidestepped anything major and instead added Newbury's prestigious London Gold Cup to his tally by four the following month. His light was still under a bushel when next appearing after a sizeable break with a half-length verdict in another handicap at York in early October and he was still only pushing a small amount of his raw material at Newmarket when upstaging Majestic Dawn (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}) in the James Seymour late that month.

While not exactly a ghost orchid to date, Bay Bridge is now out in the harsh rays as he catapulted himself to another environment altogether. “He is in the Prince of Wales's and the Hardwicke,” Wigan added. “We will ask Sir Michael what he thinks, but I think we will probably be inclined to stick to a mile and a quarter at the moment. I think we would have thought he would go to group one level, as he has won a group three with some good horses in the race today. Ryan said he didn't have to get too serious with him and he is a very exciting prospect.”

“What excited me was the way he quickened away from good horses,” Wigan continued. “He was sitting there going easily and you could see Ryan did not want to expose him too early and he was keeping him in. There was obviously something in the tank and he didn't know what. I would have thought, on the dam's side, a mile and a half would be within reach.” Moore added, “He picked up very nicely and went through the line well. He had a few issues last year, nothing major, he just had to wait but he has improved with every run.”

Mostahdaf's rider Jim Crowley admitted to an element of surprise afterwards. “I thought he ran a good race and I hold my horse in quite high regard, but the winner came past me quite easily and was very impressive,” he said. “I think my fellow would like faster ground, but there are no excuses–we were in the right spot, it's just the winner is a very good horse. I'm sure there are top races in our lad throughout the season.”

Bay Bridge's dam, a modest sprinting maiden for Prince Faisal and Mick Channon, was bought by London Thoroughbred Services for just 18,000gns at the 2013 Tattersalls December Mares Sale. She is a half-sister to the G2 Prix Eugene Adam winner Shimraan (Fr) (Rainbow Quest) and a granddaughter of The Aga Khan's Shemaya (Ire) (Darshaan {GB}), who captured the Listed Prix Casimir Delamarre before producing the G1 Prix du Jockey Club runner-up Shamkiyr (Fr) (Sea the Stars {Ire}).

Shemaya is kin to the G3 Prix Allez France winner Shemima (GB) (Dalakhani {Ire}), in turn the dam of the G3 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial scorer Cormorant (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) and the Listed Prix Madame Jean Couturie winner Shemala (Ire) (Danehill), whose descendants include the G1 Grand Prix de Paris hero Shakeel (Fr) (Dalakhani {Ire}). Descended from the G1 Prix de Diane heroine Shemaka (Ire) (Nishapour {Fr}), Hayyona also has the unraced 2-year-old filly Stormy Sea (GB) (Territories {Ire}) and a yearling colt by Time Test (GB).

Intriguing Brigadier Poser On Thursday

There is something for everyone on a frantic Thursday afternoon and evening across Europe, with five pattern races at Baden-Baden, ParisLongchamp and Sandown and four of them condensed within less than two hours. Perhaps the most crucial comes at the latter venue, where the G3 Coral Brigadier Gerard S. sees a pair of colts with big potential in Shadwell's Mostahdaf (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) and James Wigan and Ballylinch Stud's Bay Bridge (GB) (New Bay {GB}) measured against Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum's solid veteran yardstsick Addeybb (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}). Bay Bridge incites enthusiasm as a member of the Sir Michael Stoute academy and the typical improver by steady increments ended his intriguing 3-year-old campaign with a first black-type win in Newmarket's Listed James Seymour S. Mostahdaf likewise has considerable scope and with an unbeaten record in three starts at Sandown in the Listed Heron S., Listed Fortune S. and G3 Gordon Richards S., he already has a headstart on his high-class half-sister Nazeef (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) who only really got going at four.

Allez L'Astronome!

Time is running out for inclusion in the Prix du Jockey Club and in any case Al Asayl France's L'Astronome (GB) (Frankel {GB}) is probably one that needs a sterner test than he would get at Chantilly in a fortnight. Not even entered in the Classic, he goes for the G2 Prix Hocquart set at 11 furlongs on Thursday where the emphasis is bent on enhanced staying power. He fits the bill, having won over the same ParisLongchamp track last time Apr. 28 and looks certain to stay further. We all know what Francis-Henri Graffard can do with these homebreds as they build a head of steam, but he has to deal with Gestut Ittlingen's May 1 G3 Bavarian Classic scorer Lavello (Ire) (Zarak {Fr}).

Fine Tuning

Also at ParisLongchamp, the G2 Prix Vicomtesse Vigier sees Moyglare's dual G1 Irish St Leger heroine Search For a Song (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) attempt to get back on track after some up and down performances of late. It won't be easy for the homebred, who faces the G3 Prix Gladiateur winner and G1 Prix du Cadran third Bubble Smart (GB) (Intello {Ger}) as the French staying scene takes shape.

In other focal points of the day, last year's G2 German 1000 Guineas winner and G2 Prix Daniel Wildenstein S. third Novemba (Ger) (Gleneagles {Ire}) will take some overhauling in Baden-Baden's G2 Kronimus Badener Meile, while Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum's Apr. 14 Newmarket novice winner 'TDN Rising Star' TDN Rising Star Tajalla (Ire) (Kessaar {Ire}) warms up for Royal Ascot in the Listed Coral National S. at Sandown.

Costa Appointed New Trainer at Jebel Ali Stables in Dubai

Australian trainer Michael Costa has been appointed as His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's trainer at Jebel Ali Stables in Dubai. The contract was signed in the emirate on Friday. Costa, who runs Michael Costa Racing, will continue to operate his stable in Australia for the majority of the 2021/2022 season and, after all of his horses and staff have been placed with new trainers and positions, will move to Dubai and take up his new role. The horseman will oversee sourcing a large band of racing talent every year. The best-known horse to race in Sheikh Ahmed's colours is the globetrotting multiple Group 1 winner Addeybb (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), who has earned Group 1 wins in both hemispheres.

Costa released a statement via Michael Costa Racing's YouTube channel which read in part: “I went over with an objective mindset, but I was absolutely blown away by the facility, the horses and the people. The opportunity that was presented was far bigger than I could have ever anticipated. The facility itself is world class and I can't image there being a better facility and training establishment in the world.

“What the job entails is to take up the training operation and purchasing a large bloodstock band every year, as well as travelling the Carnival horses all around the world to compete at the highest level. After viewing the operation and meeting the lovely team at Jebel Ali, I had some hard conversations with my wife and family on what has been the hardest decision of my life. I've decided to take up the position of the head role for Jebel Ali and for His Highness Sheikh Ahmed.

“I'm extremely grateful for all of our owner support, growing a stable with one of the best strike rates in the country. This could only be done with the support of all of our owners. I'd also like to thank all of my staff who've shared this journey with me.”
