Derby and King George Hero Adayar Forced To Miss Prince Of Wales’s S. at Royal Ascot

Godolphin's 2021 G1 Cazoo Derby winner Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) will miss a start in Royal Ascot's G1 Prince Of Wales's S. in June, trainer Charlie Appleby confirmed. A minor setback had forced the 4-year-old to skip his planned seasonal bow in the June 3 G1 Coronation Cup S. The G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. victor requires more time to fully come right, and Appleby did not divulge the colt's next start.

“The team at Moulton Paddocks have decided to bypass Royal Ascot with Adayar,” Appleby tweeted from the Godolphin account on Saturday.

“This is to give him more time to bounce back to full fitness following the minor setback which saw him taken out of the Coronation Cup.”

In other news, Barbara and Alick Richmond's G2 Jockey Club S. hero Living Legend (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) has been supplemented, bringing the field of the Coronation Cup to six. The Coolmore partners' G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup second High Definition (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) faces 2021 Coronation Cup victor Pyledriver (GB) (Harbour Watch {Ire}), Shadwell's multiple group winner Hukum (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), dual group winner Manobo (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), who is deputising for Adayar, Charlie Appleby and Godolphin, and Brian Meehan's Palavecino (Fr) (Cacique {Ire}).

Appleby Outlines Plans For His Stable Stars

Last year's G1 Cazoo Derby and G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. hero Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) will return in the June 3 G1 Coronation Cup S., Godolphin trainer Charlie Appleby revealed on Saturday. Fourth in the G1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, one place behind stablemate Hurricane Lane (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) in October, the strapping bay ended his season with a fifth after racing too freely in the G1 QIPCO Champion S. on Oct. 16.

“Going forward the plan would be to start him off in the Coronation as we know he can handle the track, so he's ticked one box, and the trip,” Appleby said. “So he'll head to the Coronation and hopefully we'll look towards the King George again and if we're lucky enough to tick one of those boxes then the view will be taken by myself and the team whether to contemplate coming back in trip and taking in the Juddmonte International.

“Hurricane Lane has stamina in abundance, while this lad has won a Derby and a King George, as he's got stronger he's got quicker. This time last year he was still very raw, now he's mentally in a very good place and physically I cannot fault him. He's a year older and a year wiser and he's a true professional now.”

Victorious in the G2 Dante S. in May prior to his Derby third in June, Hurricane Lane then rattled off wins in the G1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby later that month and in the July 14 G1 Grand Prix de Paris. He added another Classic to his haul with a win in the Sept. 11 G1 Cazoo St Leger at Doncaster one start before his Arc placing. His long-term goal will be another crack at the ParisLongchamp showpiece.

Added, Appleby, “Hurricane Lane had a tough season but he's thrived through the winter and we're very much working back from the Arc this year. “The plan is to head to the [G2] Hardwicke [S.] at Royal Ascot first, potentially the [G1] Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud [on July 3] and then a trial for the Arc.

“He's just starting to pick his work up now and we're looking forward to Royal Ascot and seeing him in action in the Hardwicke. He's going to be a force to be reckoned with this year, the one thing about him is his versatility.”

Fresh off a strong second in the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic, GI Breeders' Cup Turf hero Yibir (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) is bound Stateside and will likely be engaged in the GI Man o' War S. at Belmont Park.

“He'll have an international campaign, we've earmarked the Man o' War S. at Belmont in the middle of May and if we get a result there we could look at something like the [GI] Sword Dancer [upstate at Saratoga].”

Trio of Classic Hopefuls Lining Up

There are a few colts sporting the royal blue headed for G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas pointers from Moulton Paddocks, and they are led by 2021 Cartier Champion 2-Year-Old Colt Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}). A flawless four-for-four, the colt broke his maiden at first asking, before running out the victor in the July 10 G2 bet365 Superlative S. and the G1 Goffs Vincent O'Brien National S. at The Curragh on Sept. 12. His 2021 finale was a two-length victory in the G1 Darley Dewhurst S. at Newmarket on Oct. 9.

“It's not the first time we've had a champion 2-year-old but the one thing missing off the Moulton Paddocks CV is a 2000 Guineas winner,” Appleby reflected.

“Native Trail was a man against boys last year. As some of the old school used to say, the Guineas can be the last 2-year-old race of the year and if the Guineas was next week I'd be pretty confident he'd be a stride in front of the crew at the moment.

Another pointing for the first colts' Classic of the year in the UK is the G3 Emirates Autumn S. hero Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). He will return in the G3 Greenham S. on Apr. 16, while Native Trail will head for the G3 Craven S. three days earlier.

“We'll look to the Craven with Native Trail and the Greenham with Coroebus. Both of them have won on the Rowley Mile so that won't be an excuse,” said Appleby. “Coroebus has a lot of pace so running him in the Greenham will hopefully help him race the right way round.

“After the Guineas we'll decide if one goes to Ireland and one goes to the [G1] St James's Palace [S. at Royal Ascot] or if they both go to the St James's Palace or if one wants stepping up in trip.”

Appleby added of GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf hero Modern Games (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), “Modern Games will head to Newcastle for the Burradon S. If we're lucky enough to achieve what we hope to achieve in the other trials then he might go to France or even Ireland.”

A 400 gns private purchase and unraced mare, the George Baker trainee's first foal and only runner Fame n Fortune (GB) (Thewayouare) gained TFR 93 while winning five times. She is also responsible for a filly by Shade Oak stud's Telescope (Ire) who is currently in training with Baker.

Acapella star will be visiting Highclere Stud Cable Bay (Ire). The Nick has already produced Ropey Guest (GB), who recorded a career-high Time Form rating 104.

“Cable Bay would most certainly be the best sire she has visited, and we are really excited by what the match can produce.”

BLUSHING BEAUTY (GB) (m, 10, Youmzain {Ire}-Pink Ivory {GB}, by Sakhee)
Blushing Beauty won in Germany over 10 furlongs and finished third in a maiden in Baden Baden in front of eventual Group 2 winner Shivajia. Her first foal, Bagatelle (GB) (Kendargent {Fr}), won at Kempton over eight furlongs and her 2-year-old daughter, Sid's Annie (GB) (Farhh {GB}), ran second in her Kempton debut over seven furlongs. Blushing Beauty's second dam is Anna of Saxony (GB), the granddam of Anna Salai (Dubawi {Ire}), who is responsible for G1 Epsom Derby and G1 King George winner Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}).

“Blushing Beauty will be visiting Land Force (Ire). Physically, I feel he will really suit her and bring some speed to the pedigree.”

Champion Glory For Galiway’s Sealiway

After a few days where moving the date of the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe had been mooted and widely-discussed, Haras de la Gousserie's Sealiway (Fr) (Galiway {GB}) proved that the 13-day turnaround from the ParisLongchamp monument to Ascot's G1 QIPCO Champion S. holds no fears with a career-defining success in Saturday's feature. While most of the focus had been on how Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) would deal with being backed up from ParisLongchamp, it was the bargain €62,000 Arqana Deauville August graduate Sealiway who bounced back from a fifth placing there to scoop this prestigious prize after a tussle with Dubai Honour (Ire) (Pride of Dubai {Aus}). Travelling with enthusiasm in fourth early in the hands of Mickael Barzalona, last year's impressive G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere hero got to Adayar and to the front two out and battled hard to see off the supplemented Dubai Honour and prevail by 3/4 of a length. There was another 1 1/2 lengths back to Mac Swiney (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) in third, with the 13-8 favourite Mishriff (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}) a length away in fourth. “It's great to be back in the big time,” Barzalona said of the Cedric Rossi-trained 12-1 shot. “I've been with him since the beginning and he deserved that. The team said he had improved a lot since the Arc run, so although it was a tough race they were pretty confident. He showed plenty of stamina in the Arc, but today he showed plenty of speed and is just an excellent horse.”

Out early as a juvenile last term, Sealiway had won over six furlongs on debut at Saint-Cloud in May and at Chantilly in June before finishing third in the Listed Prix Roland de Chambure over seven at ParisLongchamp in July. Taking Vichy 's Listed Prix des Jouvenceaux et des Jouvencelles by five lengths the following month, the chestnut had run second in the G3 Prix la Rochette back at ParisLongchamp in September prior to his eight-length romp in the Lagardere on Arc day. Fifth after meeting some trouble in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf at Keeneland in November, he returned to be second in the Apr. 18 G3 Prix de Fontainebleau and eighth in the May 16 G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains over a mile at ParisLongchamp before moving up in trip.

No match for the Poulains hero St Mark's Basilica (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) when second in the 10 1/2-furlong G1 Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly June 6, he was reappearing for the first time when finishing off strongly late under Franck Blondel to finish 3/4 of a length behind the fourth-placed Adayar at 58-1 in the Arc. Entitled to come on for that first effort off a lengthy break, he was fresh and keen throughout the early stages as last year's winner Addeybb (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) and Adayar made it honest in front. As he had two Sundays ago, Adayar looked turning for home as if he might be stretching the field, but his finish was not as dynamic as it had been here in July nor at Epsom before that and as Sealiway loomed at his side the game was up. Mishriff tried hard to get on terms with the French challenger before fading, while Mac Swiney had his run interrupted by Dubai Honour and had to switch inside. Sealiway's sole danger late was another who took part in Arc weekend, but the impressive G2 Prix Dollar winner Dubai Honour was never quite able to find that extra surge to get past as the 3-year-olds took command.

William Haggas said of the runner-up, “Dubai Honour was a little bit unfortunate, because he's a hold up horse drawn in stall 10. Adayar missed the break and just as James [Doyle] was trying to get him in, Adayar went hurtling past him and set him alight a bit. No excuse, we were quite far back but that's the way he needs to be ridden. He came with what looked like a winning run, but the other horse outstayed him. He's another that has made great progress. I was thinking that the Hong Kong Cup might suit him. He would enjoy that long straight and seems to run well right-handed. I don't know about Australia for him yet.”

Charlie Appleby said of Adayar, who ended up fifth, “Will said it was the ground. He was always just doing too much really and it paid up the straight. Will just said his exertions paid towards the end. At the end of the day, we made the decision to come here and maybe it was a tougher race than we thought in the Arc. We'll put him away for the winter and we've got a nice horse for next year. We know we can step him back up to 12 furlongs too. We know how to set our stall out next year. Today there was not going to be any natural pace and he was just over-racing and it paid towards the end.” Mishriff's rider David Egan said of the beaten favourite, “He is a better horse on better ground.”

Sealiway is out of the Listed Prix Herod winner Kensea (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}), whose full-brother to the winner Seagali (Fr) sold to the MAB Agency for €115,000 at last year's Arqana Deauville September Yearling Sale and whose Seagala (Fr) also by Galiway was a €380,000 purchase by SARL Trotting Bloodstock at the recent Arqana Deauville August Yearling Sale. This is the family of the listed-placed Exit To Nowhere pair of Enjoleur (Fr) and Epicurien (Fr), the G2 Prix Malleret scorer Another Dancer (Groom Dancer) and the G3 Park Express S. winner Pollen (Ire) (Orpen).
