Tattersalls Releases Catalogues for October Books 2-4

The catalogues for Books 2, 3 and 4 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale were released on Tuesday, with a half-brother to 2019 G1 Investec Oaks heroine Star Catcher (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) (lot 965) one of the highlights. A total of 816 yearlings will go through the ring in Book 2 from Oct. 12-14, while 602 lots are catalogued for Book 3 from Oct. 15-16. Book 4 features 83 yearlings set to go under the hammer on Oct. 17.

Alumni of Book 2 include champion and MG1SW sprinter Battaash (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), Australian MG1SW Addeybb (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), G1 Australian Cup winner Fifty Stars (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), scintillating G1 Sussex S. victor Mohaather (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), and progressive grey Way to Paris (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}), winner of the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud. Quality is not in short supply among the many offerings, as there are full- or half-siblings to 174 group and listed winners, and 110 yearlings out of group or listed-winning mares. All of the yearlings in Books 3 and 4 are eligible for the £150,000 Tattersalls October Auction S.

The Time Test (GB) half-brother to Star Catcher hails from Hascombe and Valiant Stud, and he is also a half-brother to Lemon Drop Kid’s duo of GI Pattison Canadian International S. hero and young sire Cannock Chase, and MGSW Pisco Sour. However, he is not the only sibling to a Classic winner, as Jamie Railton offers lot 856, a son of Australia (GB) out of the three-time winner Honorine (Ire) (Mark of Esteem {Ire}). She is the dam of Galileo (Ire)’s Treasure Beach (GB), winner of the G1 Irish Derby.

Also selling are half-siblings to Group 1 winners Accidental Agent (GB) (Delegator {GB})-a filly by Muhaarar (GB) as lot 1165 from Hillwood Stud–and Donjuan Triumphant (Ire) (Dream Ahead), Kilcam Park’s lot 985, a son of Invincible Sprit (Ire). Group 1 winner Chachamaidee (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand [GB})’s Sea The Stars (Ire) yearling filly (lot 674) goes through the ring from Houghton Bloodstock. Kodiac (GB), fresh off daughter Campanelle (Ire)’s win in the G1 Darley Prix Morny, is represented by a son (lot 802) out of GI E. P. Taylor S. heroine Fraulein (GB) (Acatenango {Ger}) from Lodge Park Stud.

Other established sires the likes of Acclamation (GB), Camelot (GB), Dark Angel (Ire), Exceed And Excel (Aus), Frankel (GB), Invincible Spirit (Ire), Kingman (GB), Lope de Vega (Ire), Nathaniel (Ire), Night of Thunder (Ire), No Nay Never, Pivotal (GB) and Showcasing (GB) have yearlings in the catalogues.

Leading first-season sire Mehmas (Ire), who already has four black-type winners, is represented by 10 yearlings in Book 2, and there are 18 first-crop sires represented, among them Aclaim (Ire), Caravaggio, Churchill (Ire), Decorated Knight (GB), Galileo Gold (GB), Highland Reel (Ire), Mondialiste (Ire), National Defense (GB), Postponed (Ire), Profitable (Ire), Ribchester (Ire) and Ulysses (Ire). Some of the French stallions represented number Le Havre (Ire), Shalaa (Ire) and Siyouni (Fr), while Wootton Bassett (GB), who was recently relocated to Ireland, has seven. The latter’s champion son Almanzor (Fr) has an equal number. American sires Air Force Blue, Flintshire (GB), Kitten’s Joy, and Nyquist also have yearlings slated to sell.

In 2019, 620 yearlings grossed 48,499,000gns, with an average of 78,224gns and a median of 55,500gns in Book 2. The top price of 1,050,000gns was paid by Shadwell for a daughter of Dark Angel (Ire) out of a daughter of blue hen MGSW Cassandra Go (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}).

“Both the highest rated colt in Europe, Mohaather and the highest rated sprinter in Europe, Battaash, were purchased at Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale and Book 3 has also had another outstanding year demonstrating the consistent quality to be found in the second week of the October Yearling Sales at Park Paddocks,” said Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony. “Huge demand for places in our yearling sales has ensured catalogues of real depth and quality catering to buyers at all levels of the market from throughout the world.”

Goffs Orby Catalogue Anchored by Sea The Stars Filly

The catalogue for the Goffs Orby Sale, which includes a Sea The Stars (Ire) half-sister to a trio of Group 1 winners out of Theatrical (Ire) mare Green Room (lot 176), is now online. Numerous blue-blooded pedigrees make up the two-day sale, with 474 yearlings set to go under the hammer on Sept. 29-30. Sunday’s G1 Keeneland Phoenix S. winner Lucky Vega (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) is a €175,000 graduate of the Orby Sale.

Ballylinch Stud will offer the 12th foal of the unraced Green Room, whose 2018 Galileo (Ire) filly Espania (Ire) topped the 2019 Goffs Orby Sale at €3 million. Espania is a full-sister to G1 Investec Oaks heroine and €900,000 yearling Forever Together (Ire); €680,000 Goffs Orby yearling and G1 Dubai Fillies Mile heroine Together Forever (Ire); the SP Do You Love Me (Ire)-an €3.2 million purchase and the top lot at the 2018 Goffs Orby Sale; and a half-sister to G1 Prix Jean Prat hero and sire Lord Shanakill (Speightstown). Green Room has already produced the €1.1 million Goffs Orby graduate Signe (Ire) to the cover of Sea The Stars.

Perennial champion sire Galileo (Ire) is represented by eight yearlings, including; The Castlebridge Consignment’s lot 237, a son of GI E. P. Taylor S. heroine Lahaleeb (Ire) (Redback {GB}); a filly (lot 305) out of G1 Ascot Vale S. victress Nechita (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) from the Baroda Stud draft; a 3/4 sister to G1 Irish Derby winner Trading Leather (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) (lot 311) from Manister House Stud; MGSW and GI Gamely S. runner-up Quiet Oasis (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB})’s daughter (lot 357) from the Barronstown Stud draft; Oaks Farm Stables’ lot 306, a filly out of GSP Nell Gwyn (Ire) (Danehill), herself a full-sister to European Champion 3-Year-Old Rock of Gibraltar (Ire) (Danehill); lot 122, a filly from The Castlebridge Consignment out of MSW & MGSP Easton Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}); another from Castlebridge, a filly (lot 42) out of MGSW & MGSP Banimpire (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}); and finally lot 16, a colt offered by Islanmore Stud, the third foal from MSW & GSP Alive Alive Oh (GB) (Duke of Marmalade {Ire}).

A single yearling by Dubawi is part of the Staffordstown draft as lot 17, a colt out of French MSW All At Sea (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), whose second dam is German Champion Older Mare Albanova (GB) (Alzao); while among Dark Angel’s 20 yearlings is the second foal out of the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas heroine Jet Setting (Ire) (lot 211) from Baroda Stud. Abbeville Stud brings a son of Exceed And Excel (Aus) (lot 92) out of Italian Group 3 winner Cottonmouth (Ire) (Noverre), who has already foaled Italian Champion Older Horse and MG1SW Dylan Mouth (Ire) (Dylan Thomas {Ire}). Moonlight Cloud (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire})’s Frankel (GB) half-brother is offered by Baroda Stud as lot 458, and they are also the consignor of note for a Kingman (GB) half-brother to 2020 G1 Henkel Preis de Diana heroine Miss Yoda (Ger) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) (lot 291). Camas Park Stud’s draft contains a full-brother to European champion and young sire Ten Sovereigns (Ire) (No Nay Never) (lot 388). G1 Coronation S. victress Maids Causeway (Ire) (Giant’s Causeway) is represented by a Showcasing filly (lot 267) for Ballyhane. The bay is a half-sister to MGSW Elizabeth Way (Ire) (Frankel {GB}).

In 2019, the Goffs Orby Sale grosses ¥42,927,500 for 364 sold of 429 offered. The average was €117,933 and the median was €65,000. Topping proceedings over the two-day stand was the aforementioned Espania (Ire), who sold for €3 million to M V Magnier/Westerberg from the draft of Ballylinch Stud. Allthough unraced, holds an entry for the Sept. 13 G1 Moyglare Stud S.

A full preview of the Orby Sale will be conducted after the Aug. 12-13 Goffs Land Rover Sale at Kildare Paddocks with online bidding and strict social distancing protocols in place. The Land Rover Sale is the first sale in Ireland since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and Goffs is working closely with Horse Racing Ireland to ensure that the protocols in place mirror those on Irish racecourses. Goffs is committed to delivering the best marketplace possible given the current situation, with further announcements in connection to the Orby Sale and Oct. 29-30 Sportsman’s Sale in the future.

“In the first instance we want to thank the many Irish breeders and consignors who have overwhelmingly maintained their support of the Orby Sale with drafts of quality and depth leading to another selection of pedigrees and physical specimens that simply fills us with enormous pride,” said Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby. “On visit after social distanced visit to stud farms across the land the Goffs inspection team have been supported by colts and fillies of true quality that would make the grade with ease into any other premier sale.

“These are especially challenging times and Auction Houses are having to be more adaptable than ever in terms of dates and locations. However, as we have demonstrated in recent months, Arqana, Goffs and Tattersalls will consider every option to serve the industry as best we are able, putting our usual competitive natures to one side for the greater good. To that end I have agreed with Edmond Mahony at Tattersalls that we will meet following the forthcoming store sales to discuss the autumn sales programmes of Goffs and Tattersalls, and the options that exist.

“With specific reference to the Orby and Sportsman’s Sales we will continue to monitor the situation and look at any and all options as matters evolve but we would reiterate that the modern day Goffs was set up to provide a world class sales facility in Ireland specifically for the Irish breeder. That said at the same time we have a superb sales complex in the UK so we have options to serve the industry on both sides of The Irish Sea and will make a timely decision in the best interests of all our valued vendors when we have weighed up the strengths and weaknesses of each alternative against the backdrop of a situation that is literally changing by the day. However we feel it would be imprudent to rush in to any finite decisions beyond this week at this stage and we would ask for calm heads together with the continued support of our loyal clients as by working together we can deliver the best results for the world class Irish horses so sought after around the world.”

Acclamation’s Ventura Tormenta Upsets The Lir Jet In the Robert Papin

Sixth when making his debut as The Lir Jet (Ire) (Prince of Lir {Ire}) took the honours in the G2 Norfolk S. at Royal Ascot June 19, Ventura Tormenta (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) had made enough strides in the interim to reverse that form and cause an upset in Sunday’s G2 Darley Prix Robert Papin at Chantilly. Coming back to six furlongs having finished fifth in Newmarket’s G2 Superlative S. over seven July 11, Middleham Park Racing’s bay broke sharply to lead against the rail under Christophe Soumillon. Tackled by The Lir Jet and briefly headed inside the final furlong, the 7-1 shot managed to get his head down first and prevail in the bobber by a short head from the 2-5 favourite, with Tiger Tanaka (Ire) (Clodovil {Ire}) just a neck back in third in a three-way go.

Ventura Tormenta had won a novice contest over six furlongs at Yarmouth July 4 and the fact that he was pitched into the Superlative a week later speaks volumes for his constitution. Far from disgraced in what is probably the best 2-year-old race run so far this season, he was having his fourth start in a month here and his rider said, “He jumped fast and Mr Hannon told me to let him go. I thought Oisin [Murphy] had come to take me, but we were on the right stride at the post. He has quality, was well-behaved and professional today. This is an uphill track which is more like 1300 metres and it suited him.”

The Lir Jet’s trainer Michael Bell said of the runner-up, who was stepping up from five furlongs for the first time, “It’s a little bit annoying to be beaten like that–he was in front a shade before and after the post and it was just a bob of the head. I don’t think he ran to the same rating as at Ascot, so you couldn’t blame the trip. It was disappointing.” Trainer Charley Rossi said of the previously-unbeaten Tiger Tanaka, who was right in the mix at the finish having raced in claimers on her first three starts, “We’re very proud of her. She has a big heart. She has won over a mile already and I’m certain this isn’t her best trip. We’ll give her a rest and maybe bring her back for something like the [G3] Prix d’Aumale.”

Ventura Tormenta is out of Midnight Oasis (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), a half-sister to the G3 Ballyogan S. scorer Miss Anabaa (GB) (Anabaa) who is in turn the second dam of the Listed Ripon Champion Two Year Old Trophy winner and G3 Pavilion S. third Enjazaat (GB) also by Acclamation. She is also related to the recent Listed Maggie Dickson S. winner Mubtasimah (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}), the G3 Prix du Bois winner Fly on the Night (GB) (Equiano {Fr}) and the G1 July Cup-winning sire Owington (GB) (Green Desert). Her yearling colt by Starspangledbanner (Aus) was a €40,000 purchase by Redwall Bloodstock at the Goffs November Foal Sale.
