TVG’s Weaver Wins Inaugural Folds Of Honor Poker Tournament At Santa Anita

Santa Anita Park's inaugural “Folds of Honor” Charity Poker Tournament, held Saturday night following the races in the Arcadia, Calif., track's Player's Lounge, located above Clockers' Corner, was deemed a rousing success as more than $50,000 was raised to help provide scholarships to spouses and children of disabled or fallen American military veterans.

A large contingent of Santa Anita fans, jockeys, agents, owners, trainers, employees, and other racing industry personalities helped to make the event a success.

“We were very gratified with the turn-out and the support we were able to provide to Folds of Honor,” said Santa Anita Senior Vice President and General Manager Nate Newby. “One hundred percent of the money won went to the Folds of Honor Foundation. This is a tremendous cause and I think everyone senses we have an obligation to help the families of those who have given so much in the defense of our freedom. We look forward to expanding this event and hosting it again next year.”

Among those Santa Anita-based jockeys that participated last night were Joe Bravo, Abel Cedillo, Kyle Frey, Ricky Gonzalez, Juan Hernandez, Edwin Maldonado, Tiago Pereira, and Jessica Pyfer. Trainers included Vladimir Cerin, Ryan Hanson, Doug O'Neill, and Jonathan Wong.

Frank Mirahmadi, the Voice of Santa Anita, and TVG's Dave Weaver, who credited “beginner's luck” in making a winning “all-in” bet with Queen-Nine, off-suit, headed an enthusiastic group of Santa Anita employees and Thoroughbred owners.

The Folds of Honor Foundation, which has awarded more than 35,000 educational scholarships, was represented by retired United States Marine Corps Sergeant and P.O.W. Rocky Stickmann, who was one of 65 Americans taken hostage by Iranian extremists at the U.S. embassy in Teheran on Nov. 4, 1979. Stickman and his fellow Americans were held captive for 444 days until their release on the first day of Ronald Reagan's presidency on Jan. 20, 1981.

Santa Anita's current Autumn Meet will draw to a close next Sunday, Oct. 31, with first post time on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. For additional information, please visit santaanita.com or call (626) 574-7223.

Flashiest Prepares For Twilight Derby At Santa Anita Oct. 31

Flashiest, who has outrun his odds in almost all six of his career starts, could continue that pattern in the Grade 2 Twilight Derby at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif., on closing day next Sunday, Oct. 31.

A son of Mizzen Mast conditioned by Leonard Powell, Flashiest has three wins and two seconds, his lone disappointing performance an eventful 11th in the Grade 1 Saratoga Derby Invitational at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., last Aug. 7.

“When we shipped to Saratoga, the experience was too much for him,” the trainer explained. “He got really hot in the paddock and he got to be a handful for the jockey. The whole thing was a bit overwhelming.

“He had his first race in April of this year, so he's still quite immature. But once we got back to Del Mar and into his routine, he's been just fine.”

A three-year-old gelding, Flashiest has a win and a second over Santa Anita's turf course, and the mile and an eighth of the Twilight Derby should suit his strong stretch-running style.

“That should be the right distance for him,” Powell said, “and Abel (Cedillo) will ride him back.”.

Cedillo was aboard last out on Sept. 4 when second by three-quarters of a length at odds of nearly 13-1 in the Grade 2 Del Mar Derby, and at nearly the same odds on July 16 when he guided him to victory by a head in the restricted Oceanside.

Flashiest worked four furlongs this morning in :50.40.

Loud Mouth Headlines Field For California Flag Handicap At Santa Anita

Loud Mouth, fresh and fit after being promoted to victory in the E. B. Johnston Stakes at Los Alamitos on Sept. 12, his first race in three months, returns to the turf in Sunday's $100,000 California Flag Handicap at about 6 ½ furlongs at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif.

A five-year-old full horse by Boisterous trained by Steve Knapp for owner Ron Thomsen, Loud Mouth's lone grass win came in a $32,000 claiming sprint at Santa Anita on Feb. 17, 2020.

“He's got plenty of speed for Abel (Cedillo) to come out of the gate and place the horse where he wants,” Knapp said. “The horse is doing very well right now. He had a three-month rest because he needed it. Now he's starting to come around again.”

Winner of the $100,000 Cary Grant for Cal-breds at Del Mar last Nov. 22, Loud Mouth has eight wins from 29 starts with earnings of $374,070.

“Ron's been with me for three or four years and we've done well together,” Knapp said. “He's got nine horses with me now.”

The California Flag goes as race seven of nine with a 1 p.m. first post time: Give Me the Lute, Kent Desormeaux, 3-1; Ground Attack, Edwin Maldonado, 20-1; Tiger Dad, Victor Espinoza, 20-1; North County Guy, Umberto Rispoli, 5-2; Loud Mouth, Abel Cedillo, 8-1; Unbridled Ethos, Ricardo Gonzalez, 12-1; Whooping Jay Joe Bravo, 4-1; Desmond Doss, Kyle Frey, 6-1; and Indian Peak, Juan Hernandez, 6-1.

Cedillo, Miller Earn Los Al Titles

Jockey Abel Cedillo earned his second Los Alamitos riding title while trainer Peter Miller topped the trainer standings as the Los Angeles County Fair meet concluded Sunday. Cedillo also led the standings during the 2020 LACF Winter season.

Miller finished the LACF season with seven wins, one more than Steve Miyadi. Hall of Famer Bob Baffert was third with five. The title was the sixth Miller has either shared or won outright at Los Alamitos since daytime Thoroughbred racing returned in 2014.

All-sources handle for the LACF season showed a gain of 18% over comparable days in 2019. There was no September meet at Los Alamitos in 2020.

“While participation as the entry box could have been better, we very much appreciate those owners and trainers who did participate,” said F. Jack Liebau, vice president of the Los Alamitos Racing Association. “The [handle] increase was more than 10% of what we had aggressively estimated and was attributable to an incredible 65% increase in advance deposit wagering in Southern California. We're looking forward to our upcoming Winter meet where purses will be substantially higher.”

Daytime Thoroughbred racing will return to Los Alamitos for the seven-day Winter season Dec. 3.
