Gregory To Be Rested, But Will Return For 4-Year-Old Campaign

Wathnan Racing's Gregory (GB) (Golden Horn {GB}), who won the G2 Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot, is headed for some time off, with connections opting for a 4-year-old staying campaign, according to racing advisor Richard Brown.

The John and Thady Gosden trainee won his first three starts, before running third in the G2 Great Voltigeur S. and fifth in the G1 St Leger, both times to Heart's Cry (Jpn) colt Continuous (Jpn).

“I think he's going to be better on top of the ground and he still ran an admirable race,” said Brown, reflecting on the colt's St Leger performance.

“He's a big colt and by the far the biggest, most scopey horse in that field and he's only going to get better from three to four. He still ran with credit, but we'll put him away now and we'll look at turning him into a Cup horse next year.”

Royal Scotsman To The Sidelines Until 2024 With Bone Bruising

The Classic-placed Royal Scotsman (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}), who bears the colours of Mrs. Fitri Hay, will not race again this season due to bone bruising, co-trainer Paul Cole revealed on Saturday. However, the G2 Richmond S. winner will return next year.

“He's suffered from bone bruising, which is quite rare but not a long-term issue,” said Paul Cole, who trains with his son Oliver. “Sadly he won't run again this season.

“My intention is to win as many Group 1s over a mile as I can with him next year.”

Second in the G1 Dewhurst S. and third in the G1 2000 Guineas at Newmarket both times to Chaldean (GB) (Frankel {GB}), the bay has been unplaced in two additional starts this term. In both cases, the colt was beaten by star 3-year-old Paddington (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}), in the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas and the G1 St James's Palace S. in May and June.

Juddmonte’s Sun Chariot Second Laurel To Return In 2023

Juddmontes Group 1-placed filly Laurel (GB) (Kingman {GB}), second in the G1 Sun Chariot S. on her third start last month, will return for a 4-year-old campaign, according to Juddmonte Racing Manager Barry Mahon. Trained by John and Thady Gosden, the daughter of 2008 G1 Pretty Polly S. heroine Promising Lead (GB) (Danehill) won novices at Newmarket and Kempton in July and September, respectively before her first stakes attempt in the Sun Chariot.

“Laurel will be in training next year, she probably won't run again this season,” said Juddmonte racing manager, Barry Mahon of the 'TDN Rising Star'. “We'll put her away now most likely, and we'll train her to bring her back as a 4-year-old.

“She ran an unbelievable race to finish second in a Group 1 on her third ever start and she's an exciting filly for next year for sure.”

Classic Winner Westover To Stay In Training At Four

Classic winner Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB}) will remain in training at four, according to trainer Ralph Beckett. The Juddmonte homebred ran sixth in the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe behind Alpinista (GB) (Frankel {GB}) on Sunday. The G3 bet365 Classic Trial at Sandown went his way in April and was then a running-on third in the G1 Derby in June. The bay blitzed the G1 Irish Derby field by seven lengths at the Curragh later that month and was fifth in Pyledriver (GB) (Harbour Watch {Ire})'s G1 King George VI And Queen Elizabeth S. at Ascot on July 23.

“Yes, that looks like happening,” Beckett confirmed on his star's pending 4-year-old campaign.

“I thought he ran close to his Irish Derby run, if not his Derby run, on ground which perhaps didn't play to his strengths, and it was great to get him back on track and that close to what his best is.

“He's a big horse, he's been growing through the year as well and he should improve from three to four. He's come out of the race really well, I'm really pleased with him and the way he's come out of it. We haven't made any plans yet, but I'm sure we will.”
