Mating Plans: Jason Hall

With the 2022 breeding season right around the corner, we will feature a series of breeders' mating plans over the coming weeks. Today we have Jason Hall.

“My partners and I typically breed to sell, primarily at the 2-year-old sales,” said Hall, “but if we have one that looks the part, we'll sell the occasional weanling at Keeneland November. That being said, if we feel like the market is being overly critical and we see some blue sky by going to the races with one, we're not afraid to go that route. We like mares that demonstrated some degree of talent, and we focus heavily on physical compatibility between the stallion and mare.”

AFFIANCED (m, 5, More Than Ready–All Star Heart, by Arch), to be bred to Authentic

We purchased Affianced at the recent Keeneland November Sale from Claiborne Farm for $50,000 in foal to First Samurai. A former $410,000 Keeneland September yearling, Affianced is a stellar physical with exceptional balance. While she doesn't have the type of racing credentials we typically pursue, she flashed enough talent in her Santa Anita maiden score to prompt our interest. She's out of a GII-winning Arch mare and is a half-sister to California stakes horse Eccentric Spinster (Distorted Humor). Her progeny will catalog well, so we decided to swing hard and send her to Authentic, who will undoubtedly be a source of commercial home runs. Authentic adds a lot of leg to the equation, something you always have to be mindful of with the More Than Ready influence. As tremendous as he's been as a sire, More Than Ready isn't known for adding leg to his mares.

BACK AT THE RANCH (m, 9, Artie Schiller–Major Allie, by Officer), to be bred to Justify

We purchased Back At the Ranch very inexpensively at the conclusion of her career shortly before her half-brother, Cistron (The Factor), won the GI Bing Crosby S. at Del Mar. She herself won early sprinting at Belmont for Wesley Ward, and went on to win four of 14 and earn $103,185. With the Grade I update under her first dam, we felt like she warranted a season with Improbable last year, and Justify this year. At this stage, I don't think we have to remedy any physical shortcomings while planning her matings, but of course, that could change when her first foals arrive. She's a big, strong mare with lots of balance and curb appeal, so we can go in a lot of directions with her. Justify is as good a physical specimen as we've ever laid eyes on, so on paper at least, this foal should be a standout individual.

BE A LADY (m, 9, Cindago–Storm Hearted, by Lion Hearted), to be bred to More Than Ready

Be a Lady is probably the tallest horse we've ever owned. I believe the farm measured her out at 17.1 after we purchased her for $35,000 at the 2019 Keeneland November Sale. She earned $186,995 sprinting in Southern California, comes from an active family (she's a full-sister to California stakes winner and track record holder Wake Up Nick), and her sire is off to a stellar beginning as a broodmare sire. We kept her with a bigger stallion her first season (Violence), as even big mares can throw a pony their first year. But since then, we've kept her with small/medium types. Given the quality we've seen in her Violence and Jimmy Creed foals, we felt like she warranted an opportunity with an elite sire like More Than Ready, who usually benefits from mares with a lot of leg and scope.

CHU AND YOU (m, 11, You and I–Bronze Charmer, by Volponi), to be bred to Temple City

My wife purchased this mare's Temple City yearling for $27,000 at Keeneland September in 2020. Now named Boise, he won the Gold Rush S. at Golden Gate in December and will run in the El Camino Real on Feb. 12. We were really high on him from the start. So much so that we reached out to his breeders and purchased his dam privately. Rather than overthink things, we decided to send her back to Temple City this year to get a full-sibling to Boise. Chu and You isn't very big, but of course, Temple City and the Dynaformer influence usually compliment smaller mares quite well. You couldn't ask for a better physical than Boise, so we're bullish on going to the well again. At the recent Keeneland January sale, we acquired Chu and You's half-sister, Attyia (Dialed In), who will also visit Temple City this year.

PATTITUDE (m, 10, City Zip–Dancinandsingin, by A.P. Indy), to be bred to War of Will

Within months of acquiring her at the 2021 Fasig-Tipton Mixed Sale, two new stakes winners emerged in her immediate family: Army Wife (Declaration of War), who won the GII Black-Eyed Susan S., and Ellamira (Street Boss), who won the Golden Gate Debutante. Pattitude was already a half to [GSW & MGISP] Scherzinger (Tiz Wonderful) and to the dam of [GSW & GISP] Kitten's Roar (Kitten's Joy), so it's an extremely active family that will really light up a catalog page. Like a lot of City Zips, it's usually best to keep them with stallions that are solid through the hindquarters and have plenty of size/leg, which is why we sent her to Flatter last year and will send her back to War of Will in 2022.

ROLL YOUR EYES (m, 13, Popular–Officer Lea, by Nodouble), to be bred to Mineshaft

At the very end of her career, we acquired Roll Your Eyes for nothing more than a ham sandwich. She was a smallish mare with a top line that had gotten progressively softer during her racing days, but we liked her California stakes form early in her career (she had finished second in the Wine Country Debutante S. at Santa Rosa as a 2-year-old), and she was particularly strong through her forearm, gaskins, and hindquarters. We've gotten nothing but stunning foals from her thus far including a stakes horse (Film Study {Custom for Carlos}) and recent maiden special weight winner in California, Fascinated (Majesticperfection). She's currently in foal to Vekoma and will visit Mineshaft in 2022. Mineshaft is a sire that is well respected in all circles and usually benefits from more powerfully built mares like Roll Your Eyes.

Mating Plans: Marie Jones

In this edition of our ongoing mating plans series, we spoke with Marie Jones with additional notes from Katie Taylor and Doug Cauthen.

Marie Jones is carrying on the successful breeding program that she first started with her late husband Aaron. Their program is responsible for Grade I winners and champions including Ashado, Speightstown, Drosselmeyer and Mrs. McDougal, as well as the dam of Life is Good. Today, her high-end, boutique operation focuses on acquiring accomplished, well-bred mares and maintaining a portfolio of shares and breeding rights in proven commercial sires. Her current stallion portfolio includes Candy Ride (Arg), Violence, Not This Time, Medaglia d'Oro, Tapit and Into Mischief.

ENCHANTED GHOST (m, 7, Ghostzapper – Uniformly Yours, by Grand Slam) to be bred to Tapit

Enchanted Ghost is currently in foal to Into Mischief. She has a fabulous Tapit yearling filly who is one of the best, if not the best, foal of her crop. She will be going back to the same sire.

The Tapit-Ghostzapper direct cross has not been tried many times yet but has already produced GIIISW Bellavais. Tapit is also the sire of GIIISW Bandbox, who is out of a mare bred Grand Slam over Deputy Minister.

GLORY OF THE NILE (m, 3, Pioneerof the Nile – Gloryzapper, by Ghostzapper) to be bred to Violence

Glory of the Nile is a young, homebred mare. She had a fantastic Candy Ride filly this year who was the first foal to arrive at Taylor Made.

She will be booked back to Violence. Physically, we love this mating. Violence and another son of Medaglia d'Oro, Fast Anna, have sired stakes winners out of direct Empire Maker mares. Violence's stakes winner out of an Empire Maker mare is Violent Time, winner of the Ana T. S. at Gulfstream.

MAMMA KIMBO (m, 13, Discreet Cat – Bag Lady Jane, by Devil's Bag) to be bred to Medaglia d'Oro

Mamma Kimbo is currently in foal to Not This Time. She will be bred to Medaglia d'Oro. It is a good mating physically and the El Prado-Forestry cross has produced 9% stakes winners (A Nick).

NOTED AND QUOTED (m, 8, The Factor – Silver Cub, by City Zip) to be bred to Uncle Mo

We love this mating physically because Uncle Mo can lend some size and scope to this mare. This is also a very current and fashionable mating mimicking the cross of current GSW Enola Gay (Uncle Mo). The second dam of Uncle Mo's GISW Mo Town is bred Carson City over Danzig and Uncle Mo is also the sire of GSW Moon Colony, who is out of a Carson City mare.

PRINCESS LA QUINTA (m, 8, Quality Road – Social Scene, by Tabasco Cat) to be bred to Into Mischief

Princess La Quinta is in foal to Tapit and she is booked to Into Mischief this year. Her first foal was an Into Mischief colt who sold well as a yearling, going to SF Bloodstock and into a good program on the track. We are hoping he finds success in his new program to support the 2023 foal out of this mare.

Streak of Luck and her 2022 Authentic colt | Taylor Made/Kelcey Loges

Gone West has been one of the key crosses for Into Mischief. He has produced three Grade I winners from the cross including his Kentucky Derby hero Authentic. The other two are out of mares by Speightstown, who is bred on a similar Gone West-Storm Cat cross to this mare.

STREAK OF LUCK (m, 7, Old Fashioned – Valeria, by Elusive Quality) to be bred to Into Mischief

This mare foaled a feisty colt by Authentic last month. He was actually the first Authentic foal to hit the ground. She will be bred to Into Mischief this season.

SWEET KISSES (m, 5, Carpe Diem – True Kiss, by Is It True) to be bred to Charlatan

Sweet Kisses will be having a foal by Into Mischief this year and will then be bred to Charlatan. Charlatan is by Speighstown, who my husband and I bred years ago.

TAPASSION (m, 4, Tapit – Distorted Passion, by Distorted Humor) to be bred to Candy Ride (Arg)

Tapassion is in foal to Violence and is booked back to Candy Ride. This mare's yearling Candy Ride colt is lovely. He is one of the top foals in the crop, so we are hoping to go back on this cross and get a similar individual.

Candy Ride has two stakes winners from Tapit mares and he has three more stakes-placed runners on this exact cross, including GISP Dolder Grand.

WICKED LICK (m, 8, Maclean's Music – Here Music, by Dehere) to be bred to Not This Time

This mare will foal our second Authentic foal in 2022 and then will be visiting Not This time. This is a really good match physically. Not This Time can pretty this mare up. She has a great hip and hind leg and is good through her knees, but he can refine her head.

The Deputy Minister in her pedigree could be a plus as Not This Time is the sire of GISW Princess Noor and SW Next, who are out of daughters or granddaughters of Deputy Minister's son Awesome Again.

Mating Plans: Heider Family Stables’ Irish-Based Mares

With the 2022 breeding season right around the corner, we will feature a series of breeders' mating plans over the coming weeks. Breeder Scott Heider of Heider Family Stables shares with us the mating plans for his Irish-based mares at Norelands Stud.

PISTA (m, 5, American Pharoah–Mohini {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) to be bred to Dubawi (Ire)
Winner of the 2020 G2 Park Hill S. and second in the G1 Prix de Royallieu, this Joseph O'Brien-trained daughter of American Pharoah is currently in foal to Ballylinch Stud's Lope de Vega (Ire). This mating gives us a desirable 5×5 cross to influential mare Coup de Folie (Halo). Pista's second and third dams, Denebola (Storm Cat) and Coup de Genie (Mr. Prospector), were both champions. Pista is booked this year to Dubawi (Ire). Pista excelled at staying distances, so we like the versatility of both Dubawi and Lope de Vega as we introduce some speed. We are very excited about this talented young mare from a deeply productive Niarchos family.

AMSER (GB) (m, 8, Frankel {GB}–Clepsydra {GB}, by Sadler's Wells) to be bred to Siyouni (Fr)
Amser was acquired in 2020 from Juddmonte Farms. This young Frankel mare is a half-sister to Group I winners Timepiece (GB) (Zamindar) and Passage of Time (GB) (Dansili {GB}), the latter the dam of new sire Time Test (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). Clepsydra's half-sister Double Crossed (GB) (Caerleon) is the dam of champion Twice Over (GB) (Observatory) and her half-sister Sacred Shield (GB) (Beat Hollow {GB}) is the dam of 2020 GI Matriarch S, winner Viadera (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}). Amser travels to France this year and will be covered by French champion sire Siyouni (Fr) who is an amazing stallion. Amser is Sadlers Wells 3×2. This mating with Siyouni brings in an additional strain of Northern Dancer through the influential Danehill.

A NEW DAWN (IRE) (Zoffany {Ire}–Simply A Star {Ire}, by Giant's Causeway) to be bred to Wootton Bassett (GB)
Multiple group placed A New Dawn was trained for us by young Joseph O'Brien. Acquired privately from our friends at Coolmore, we are thankful to have a granddaughter of Cherry Hinton (GB) (Green Desert) in our broodmare band. A New Dawn had her first foal in January, a beautiful daughter by Kingman (GB). The Urban Sea line tends to not be overly large in size, so we are thoughtful on proper matings. A New Dawn is booked this season to Wootton Bassett (GB), a stud we believe will be one of the pre-eminent stallions in all of Europe for a long time coming. He reminds us of Into Mischief here in the States.

MY GENERATION (f, 4, Speightstown–Louvakhova, by Maria's Mon) to be bred to Wootton Bassett (GB)
An Irish stakes winner last year at age three for Joseph, My Generation is a half-sister to our Group III-winning colt Crossfirehurricane (Kitten's Joy) and a half-sister to the dam of recent New York multiple stakes winner Jack and Noah (Fr) (Bated Breath {GB}). A deep European family, Louvakhova is a half-sister to French champion and Breeders' Cup-winning mare Flotilla (Mizzen Mast). My Generation is one of the prettiest and most well-balanced fillies we've bred. She is booked this season to budding superstar Wootton Bassett (GB), giving us Gone West 4×3. It's a terrific physical match, as well.

Mating Plans: Wasabi Ventures Stables

With the 2022 breeding season right around the corner, we will feature a series of breeders' mating plans over the coming weeks. Today we have George Adams of Housatonic Bloodstock, who serves as the Director of Stallions and Breeding for Wasabi Ventures Stables.

“With a relatively young group of mares, ideally we'd like to send them to a proven stallion at least once or twice in their first few years, just to get a better handle on their ability as producers,” said Adams. “At a lower stud fee price point that's not always easy to do, especially when you're trying to breed a foal with commercial appeal. But we think we're striking a pretty good balance overall.”

WILD FOR LOVE (m, 12, Not For Love–Sticky, by Concern), to be bred to Tacitus

Wasabi's most proven broodmare is Wild for Love, and she's booked to a first-year stallion we're really excited about in Tacitus. Wild for Love herself brought good money as a 2-year-old and was a pretty solid racehorse. We obtained her privately a couple of years ago, while she was carrying the foal that became the 2021 stakes-winning 2-year-old Local Motive. He's by a son of Tapit, and Not For Love mares have had success with A.P. Indy-line stallions before (see California Chrome), so Tacitus was an easy choice. He's got an outstanding pedigree and a great physical, and he might not have won a Grade I, but he was a top-class racehorse. The fact that he's a Tapit with Storm Cat on his bottom side means this foal will be similarly bred to Local Motive.

YESSHEWILL (m, 10, Giant's Causeway–Wilshewed, by Carson City), to be bred to Rock Your World

Yesshewill was just purchased by Wasabi at Keeneland in November. Unfortunately, she lost the Accelerate foal she was carrying at the time, but she's still a half-sister to a Grade I winner, a Grade II winner, a Grade III winner and another stakes winner, plus two stakes producers.

Having had a handful of foals already, she's another mare that will visit a first-year stallion in 2022 and is booked to Rock Your World. David Ingordo is one of the best judges of young horses out there, and this colt had all the brilliance and versatility you'd want in a sire. His pedigree is also top drawer, and shares some similarities with Gun Runner, who has had his biggest successes so far with mares carrying more Storm Cat blood. We're going to try to duplicate that with Rock Your World by sending him this Giant's Causeway mare, and hope it works as well for him.

HURRYUPANDCOMEBACK (m, 7, Mizzen Mast–Shared Hope, by Gone West), to be bred to Modernist

Hurryupandcomeback produced a $275,000 Saratoga yearling by Army Mule as her first foal, and last year got a shot with a stallion about as proven as you can get in More Than Ready. She's going back to another first-year sire in 2022, in Modernist.

A gorgeous horse by a stallion who has already proven his worth as a sire of sires, Modernist will suit this mare physically as she needs a little bit of leg and substance, which he offers. And her family has already had success with Uncle Mo, as he's the sire of Donna Veloce who appears under Hurryupandcomeback's second dam.

WOWWHATABRAT (m, 10, Louis Quatorze–Kim the Brat, by Smart Strike), to be bred to Jimmy Creed

Wowwhatabrat was a hard-knocking, versatile runner and is a three-quarter sister to a really good colt named Second of June. Her dam is a half to the dam of Any Given Saturday, who is by Distorted Humor, and we have been on record repeatedly as being huge fans of Jimmy Creed (obviously by Distorted Humor), who offers incredible value and is a perfect horse to start off a young mare with given his stats.

So this is a mating which we really love. Unfortunately Wowwhatabrat lost the foal she was carrying last year by Jimmy Creed, but she'll head right back to him this spring and we'll hope for better luck.

BUFF'S IN LOVE (m, 7, Buffum–Who's in Love, by Not For Love), to be bred to Alternation

Buff's in Love was a stakes-placed 2-year-old by a sneaky-good Maryland stallion in Buffum, who died just as he was starting to prove his worth. This will be Buff's in Love's first mating, and she's going to be bred to a proven Grade I sire in Alternation. Buffum is a son of Bernardini, and Alternation's big horse, Serengeti Empress, is out of a Bernardini mare. This year is also when Alternation will have a big crop of 2-year-olds reach the races that was conceived after Serengeti Empress's success, so we think he could be a really smart value play this spring.

WEEKEND MADNESS (m, 6, Include–Weekend Connection, by Pulpit), to be bred to Goldencents

Weekend Madness was a big-money 2-year-old by Include, who is a stallion that we really love as a broodmare sire, and her 3-year-old brother Kavod is on the Derby Trail at Oaklawn this winter. She's going to be bred back to Goldencents this spring. He gets nothing but runners, and Weekend Madness is a half to a couple of stakes horses from the Storm Cat sire line. She's also a big, imposing mare with plenty of leg and substance, which should really suit Goldencents.

SEVILLE'S PRINCESS (m, 6, Seville {Ger}–Rap and Dance, by Pleasant Tap), to be bred to Connect

Seville's Princess also has a close relative on the Derby trail–she's a half to the dam of Grade I winner Rattle N Roll, and as such made perfect sense to send to Connect (sire of Rattle N Roll) this spring.

Connect is off to a very strong start at stud, and she's a young mare who could use a shot with a proven horse. He's also got the bone and substance to beef up her foal, so it's a good match all around.
