Moquett Derby Dreaming As Trainer And Co-Owner Of Osbourne

Whitmore had been trainer Ron Moquett's stable star until the 2020 Breeders' Cup Sprint winner and 2020 champion male sprinter was retired earlier this year because of a leg injury.

Now, another chestnut gelding will try to pick up the slack. Moquett said Tuesday morning that lightly raced Osbourne will make his 3-year-old and stakes debut in the $250,000 Smarty Jones Jan. 1, Oaklawn's first of four Kentucky Derby points races.

A son of Oaklawn stakes winner Tapiture, Osbourne broke his maiden at seven furlongs Nov. 17 at Churchill Downs in his last start. Osbourne, in his only start, finished second to Howling Time in a maiden special weights sprint Sept. 25 at Churchill Downs. Howling Time returned to win the $200,000 Street Sense Stakes at 1 1/16 miles Oct. 31 at Churchill Downs to remain unbeaten in two lifetime starts.

“He's a good horse,” Moquett said, referring to Osbourne.

Moquett (Southern Springs Stables) co-owns Osbourne, who is now based at Oaklawn in advance of his scheduled two-turn debut in the one-mile Smarty Jones. The race previously had been run in mid to late January before all of Oaklawn's Kentucky Derby points races were moved up on the 2021-22 stakes calendar, including the $1 million Arkansas Derby (G1) April 2, in conjunction with Oaklawn opening in December for the first time in history. The Arkansas Derby is now five weeks before the Kentucky Derby. It had been three weeks since 1996.

“At the end of the day, that's what's great when Southern Springs owns them,” Moquett said. “We just do whatever the horse says. He came out of the race very good. We'll just point that direction and see what happens.”

Moquett owns Osbourne in a partnership that includes the estate of Floyd Sagely. A star football player during the early 1950s at the University of Arkansas, Sagely died three days before Osbourne's career debut. He was 89.

“Really cool dude, too,” said Moquett, who had trained approximately a year for Sagely. “He went to Ten Mile (Oaklawn's satellite training center about 25 miles east of Hot Springs) and saw his horses this summer. It was a shocking deal whenever he died because I had just got through seeing him.”

Moquett said he has two other horses for Sagely's estate – Trident Hit, who finished fourth in the $100,000 Jeffrey A. Hawk Memorial Stakes for 3-year-olds and up last Friday at Remington Park, and Massard, an unraced 2-year-old filly by champion Nyquist. Moquett said Massard is the name of the street Sagely resided on in Fort Smith, Ark.

The Smarty Jones will offer 17 points (10-4-2-1) to the top four finishers toward starting eligibility for the Kentucky Derby. Nominations close Dec. 17.

Moquett won the 2015 Smarty Jones with Far Right, who finished 15th in the Kentucky Derby.

Tiz The Bomb Made 3-1 Morning Line Favorite For Kentucky Jockey Club

Phoenix Thoroughbreds' $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (Grade 1) runner-up Tiz the Bomb was tabbed as the 3-1 morning line favorite in Saturday's 95th running of the G2 Kentucky Jockey Club, the featured event on Saturday's “Stars of Tomorrow II” program at Churchill Downs.

Trained by two-time Kentucky Jockey Club-winning conditioner Kenny McPeek, Tiz the Bomb finished second by 1 ½ lengths to Modern Games in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf when he rallied from more than seven lengths off the early pace.

“We've always thought highly of him from the start,” jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. said. “Before the (Juvenile Turf) he handled things professionally when we were waiting behind the gate during the scratch situation. He ran a really good effort to finish second after we got back a little bit farther than we planned at the start.”

Bettors were rewarded with Tiz the Bomb's 7-1 mutuel price in the Juvenile Turf after Modern Games was mistakenly scratched from the tote system but allowed to run for purse money only.

Saturday's 1 1/16-mile Kentucky Jockey Club will award points to the Top 4 finishers on a 10-4-2-1 scale toward a spot in the starting gate in the Derby. McPeek has made six starts in the Kentucky Derby and finished second in 1995 with Tejano Run.

“We've been on the Road to the Kentucky Derby before and it's always exciting,” McPeek said. “We have three really nice horses so far this year in Rattle N Roll along with Tiz the Bomb and Smile Happy, who are in the Jockey Club.”

McPeek won the 2018 edition of the Kentucky Jockey Club with Signalman and in 2001 with Repent.

The Kentucky Jockey Club will go as Race 11 of 12 with a post time of 5:56 p.m. (all times Eastern). First post is 1 p.m.

Here's the complete field for the Kentucky Jockey Club from the rail out (with jockey, trainer and morning line odds): Classic Causeway (Joel Rosario, Brian Lynch, 7-2); Guntown (Tyler Gaffalione, Steve Asmussen, 15-1); Rich Strike (Rafael Bejarano, Eric Reed, 50-1); Texas Red Hot (Julien Leparoux, Randy Morse, 12-1); Howling Time (Joe Talamo, Dale Romans, 7-2); Tiz the Bomb (Hernandez, McPeek, 3-1); Vivar (Florent Geroux, Brad Cox, 12-1); Smile Happy (Corey Lanerie, McPeek, 12-1); Red Knobs (Ricardo Santana Jr., Romans, 15-1); White Abarrio (Edgard Zayas, Saffie Joseph, 8-1); Ready Pursuit (Martin Garcia, Jerry Antonuik, 50-1); Ben Diesel (Jon Court, Dallas Stewart, 15-1); Mannix (IRE) (Edwin Gonzalez, Mark Casse, 20-1); and Call Me Midnight (Chris Landeros, Keith Desormeaux, 15-1).

With Baffert Horses Omitted From List, ‘All Others’ Likely Favorite In Derby Future Wager Pool 1

The pari-mutuel field of “All Other Colts and Geldings from the 2019 Foal Crop” is likely to be a strong even-money favorite in Pool 1 of the 2022 Kentucky Derby Future Wager, which kicks off a four-day run at Churchill Downs on Thanksgiving Day. Jack Christopher, the impressive Champagne (G1) winner for trainer Chad Brown expected to resume training in early 2022, is anticipated to be the 10-1 second choice.

Pool 1 assumes that horses under the care of trainers suspended from competing in the 2022 Kentucky Derby will not be under consideration. To that end, prospects Corniche, Messier, Pinehurst and Rockefeller (currently trained by Bob Baffert) are not among the 22 individual betting interests and are included within the pari-mutuel field.

Jack Christopher, who was expected to be the $2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) favorite, was scratched from the Nov. 5 race, and had a screw inserted into his left shin due to a stress fracture shortly thereafter.

“So we will start him back (training) in early 2022 at WinStar Farm and then ship him to Palm Meadows and start his campaign in South Florida.” Bradley Weisbord, the racing manager for co-owner Jim Bakke, told BloodHorse on Tuesday.

Here's the complete Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 1 field (with trainer, sire and morning line odds):
#1 Ben Diesel (Dallas Stewart, Will Take Charge, 30-1);
#2 Classic Causeway (Brian Lynch, Giant's Causeway, 15-1);
#3 Commandperformance (Todd Pletcher, Union Rags, 15-1);
#4 Double Thunder (Todd Pletcher, Super Saver, 30-1);

#17 Rattle N Roll (Kenny McPeek, Connect, 15-1);
#18 Smile Happy (Kenny McPeek, Runhappy, 50-1);
#19 Tiz the Bomb (Kenny McPeek, Hit It a Bomb, 20-1);
#20 Trafalgar (Al Stall Jr., Lord Nelson, 50-1);
#21 Varatti (Todd Pletcher, Into Mischief, 50-1);
#22 Zandon (Chad Brown, Upstart, 30-1);
#23 All Fillies from the 2019 Foal Crop (50-1);
#24 All Other Colts and Geldings from the 2019 Foal Crop (1-1).

The pool, which features $2 Win and Exacta wagering, opens Thursday at noon and will close Sunday at 6 p.m. ET.

The Kentucky Derby Future Wager will be offered concurrently with the seventh annual Kentucky Derby Sire Future Wager, which provides bettors with a unique opportunity to wager on select breeding stars and their entire crop of juveniles with the hope of winning next year's Kentucky Derby.

Offspring sired by Quality Road, including Corniche, was made the individual 8-1 favorite by oddsmaker Mike Battaglia. “All Other Sires” is the 6-1 early choice.

Here's the Kentucky Derby Sire Future Wager field (with morning line odds):
#1 American Pharoah (20-1);

#23 Violence (30-1); and
#24 “All Other Sires” (6-1).

This marks the ninth consecutive year that Churchill Downs has hosted Future Wager pools in November on closing weekend of its Fall Meet.

The Kentucky Derby Future Wagers provide fans of Thoroughbred racing with opportunities to place bets on possible entrants in the Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve (Grade 1) at odds that could be far greater and more attractive than those available on the day of the race. The 148th running of Kentucky Derby, America's greatest race and the first leg of the Triple Crown, is set for Saturday, May 7, 2022, at Churchill Downs.

Bets can be placed at Churchill Downs Racetrack, online wagering outlets and satellite wagering centers across North America.

There are no refunds in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager. Should Churchill Downs officials determine during the duration of this week's four-day pool that one of the wagering interests has experienced an injury, illness or other circumstance that would prevent the horse from participating in the Kentucky Derby, betting on the individual horse will be suspended immediately.

More information, Brisnet.com past performances and real-time odds on the Kentucky Derby Future Wager will be available before the pool opens Thursday online at https://www.kentuckyderby.com/wager/future-wager.
