Del Mar’s ‘Ship & Win’ Program Expanded

Santa Anita Park and the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club have joined forces to expand upon Del Mar's “Ship & Win” program as out-of-state horses, who make their first California-based starts in May and June at Santa Anita, will still be eligible for Del Mar's purse incentives, beginning with their Summer Meet opener July 16. Effective May 1, out-of-state horses can start up to twice at Santa Anita through closing day of the current 2021 Winter/Spring Meet June 20 and still be eligible for Del Mar's Ship & Win program bonuses.

“This is a great enticement to out-of-state owners and horsemen to bring their horses here in advance of Del Mar,” said Santa Anita Director of Racing and Racing Secretary Chris Merz. “People around the country know Santa Anita and Del Mar provide world class training and racing opportunities.  We've very happy the folks at Del Mar and with the Thoroughbred Owners of California (TOC) recognize the importance of this comprehensive approach to attracting new horses.”

Merz added that any new horses participating in the Del Mar 'Ship & Win' program will also be eligible for the Santa Anita Sunshine Bonus, which will again be offered at the track's upcoming Autumn Meet, which opens Oct. 1.

Enhancements Made to Del Mar’s ‘Ship & Win’ in ’21

Del Mar's 'Ship & Win Program' will increase for the seaside track's 82nd season, beginning Friday, July 16. Ship & Win will provide horsemen and horsewomen who bring in out-of-state runners to race at Del Mar this summer a $4,000 starter bonus for their initial outing with a further 50% purse supplement for all dirt starters and a 40% purse supplement for all races run on turf. Those are the highest incentives provided since the program began in 2011. The purse bonuses extend to additional starts at the summer meet and are designed to enhance all purses won by first through fifth finishers.

“The Ship & Win program has been essential to Del Mar's racing program and for racing in California,” said Del Mar's racing secretary David Jerkens. “Our local owners and trainers are our biggest backers of the program, providing over 70% of the runners. Doubling the bonus levels this year has got people really excited. My phone is ringing off the hook.”

Del Mar, working in conjunction with Santa Anita to attract runners to Southern California, will extend purse benefits to a horse which makes its initial Ship & Win start in either May or June at Santa Anita. The same horse may make up to two starts during that period and still have its purse benefits extended through the Del Mar summer meet.

Ship & Win Rules:

  • Horses must have made their last start outside of California
  • Horses cannot have raced in California in the past 12 months
  • First-time starters are not eligible
  • $4,000 first-race starter fee to all qualifying horses 50% purse bonus for dirt finishers first through fifth; 40% purse bonus for turf finishers; bonuses stay the same for subsequent starts at the meet
  • If a Ship & Win horse is acquired (or claimed) after its initial S & W start, the original owner earns purse bonuses for subsequent outings through the summer meet
  • Stakes runners (including overnight stakes) are not eligible for the 50% or 40% purse supplement, but will receive the $4,000 starter bonus

Del Mar's 31-day summer meet concludes Labor Day Monday, Sept. 6. For more information, click here.

Fans Return to Del Mar For ’21 Summer Meet

Following improving trends in public health data, growth in vaccination rates and the gradual relaxation of limits on attendance at sporting and performance venues in the state, Del Mar Thoroughbred Club announced the return of fans to the seaside track when it opens for its 82nd summer season Friday, July 16. Track personnel are planning for spectators on site when the racetrack kicks off a 31-day season that will feature 34 major stakes.

“We will continue to follow the guidance of local health officials and our medical advisors, but based on what has been announced for other local attractions such as the San Diego Padres and SeaWorld, we are optimistic we will have fans in the stands this summer at some level,” said Del Mar president and COO Josh Rubinstein. “We have the advantages of a 350-acre site and a facility that can host people quite comfortably with appropriate social distancing as needed.”

Heading its traditional opening day feature–the Runhappy Oceanside S.–the July 16 kickoff will initiate a Friday-Saturday-Sunday scheduled beginning to the first two weeks of the season. The remainder of the meet will feature Thursday through Sunday racing weeks with a finale Labor Day Monday, Sept. 6.

First post daily will be at 2 p.m. with the exception of Fridays in which first post will be at 4 p.m.
