King For A Day Retired To Irish Hill And Dutchess Views Stallions In New York For 2021

King for a Day (2016, Uncle Mo o/o Ubetwereven by, French Deputy), the only horse to beat 2019 champion 3-year-old male Maximum Security to the wire at three, was officially retired from racing as announced by Red Oak Farm's vice president and general manager, Rick Sacco.

King for A Day will be starting his stud career in 2021 under the management of Irish Hill and Dutchess Views Stallions LLC in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. He will stand for $6,000 LFSN.

Stephen P. Brunetti's, Red Oak Stable campaigned the talented son of Uncle Mo and will remain actively involved in his stallion career including sending several quality mares to him.

King for a Day broke his maiden in his second start as a 2-year-old in a highly competitive Belmont Park, maiden special weight which contained the likes of future Triple Crown standout and graded stakes winner Tacitus. From there, it was on to a career in stakes company.

King for a Day would make his 3-year-old debut a winning one in the Sir Barton Stakes on the Preakness undercard. While drawing off to win the Sir Barton by 2 1/2 lengths, King for a Day would just miss the Pimlico track record for a mile and a sixteenth. Less than a month later, in his next start, King for a Day would press Maximum Security through a half-mile, then back off briefly before putting in a brilliant, sustained effort to defeat the future 3-year-old champion by a length in the TVG.com Pegasus Stakes at Monmouth Park.

Todd Pletcher, who trained both King for a Day and his sire Uncle Mo, was quick to compare the two.

“King for a Day displayed big talent from day one,” the trainer said. “He not only strongly resembles his sire Uncle Mo but, he had a great mind to go with the talent. King had a high cruising speed just like his sire.

“[King for a Day] was precocious to win at two in a tough maiden special weight race at Belmont Park over Tacitus and others,” Pletcher continued. “His win over Maximum Security at three in the Pegasus elevated him to another level, and there is no doubt in my mind that this horse had the ability to win Grade 1 races.”

Uncle Mo is emerging as a true “stallion maker.” He is the sire of three of the top four leading freshman sires of 2020: Nyquist, Laoban and Outwork. King for a Day also comes from a strong female family which includes the black type-winning mare Feel That Fire who is the dam of multiple Grade 1-winning millionaire, Mind Control.

Competitive Edge Relocated To Valor Farm In Texas

Competitive Edge, a Grade 1 winner and nationally ranked first- and second-crop sire over the past two years, was purchased by Douglas Scharbauer to stand at Valor Farm in Pilot Point, Texas.

The son of Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver previously stood at Ashford Stud in Kentucky. His 2021 fee will be $5,000.

Bred by WinStar Farm LLC and sold for $750,000 as a 2-year-old, Competitive Edge broke his maiden at first asking by more than 10 lengths at Saratoga Race Course. Then in just his second career start, he romped to a 5 3/4-length win in the historic Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes, also at Saratoga.

His win streak continued as a 3-year-old, when in consecutive starts he won the Tamarac Stakes at Gulfstream Park and the G3 Pat Day Mile Stakes at Churchill Downs, stopping the timer at 1:34.18. All told, he earned $519,280 on the track.

Competitive Edge, who also covered mares in the Southern Hemisphere while with Ashford, was North America's sixth-ranked first-crop sire with more than $1.3 million in progeny earnings in 2019. He is currently ranked among the top 15 second-crop sires, with total progeny earnings of nearly $3.6 million thorough early December.

He is represented by 12 stakes horses, including Saratoga stakes winners Fierce Lady and My Italian Rabbi, Grade 2- and Grade 3-placed Reagan's Edge and Grade 3-placed Edgeway.

First-Year Honest Mischief Heads Sequel New York’s 2021 Stallion Roster

Sequel Stallions New York announces its 2021 stud fees, led by New York's first son of 2020 leading sire Into Mischief, Honest Mischief who will stand for $6,500 LFSN.

The freaky-fast bay is new for the 2021 season and will be backed by a syndicate led by Sequel, with global powerhouse Juddmonte Farms in support.

New York's perennial leading sire Freud will stand for $5,000. Freud, New York's leading sire by number of black type winners, turf, and AEI is the versatile full brother to Giant's Causeway. He has lifetime progeny earnings over $65 million dollars aptly earning his nom de course as the “King Of New York.”

“It is a very tough climate in the sales market anywhere now, but especially in the regional markets. We want to give our breeders a chance to be profitable,” said Sequel's Becky Thomas. “The recent sales in Kentucky have clearly demonstrated breeding in Kentucky does not guarantee a profit. The lower stallion fees, no transportation or boarding costs coupled with the lucrative purse structure NYRA offers and resulting awards will give our breeders the opportunity to recover from the dismal 2020 season.”

Unbridled's Song's Grade 1-performing millionaire, Mission Impazible has led every crop he has had of racing age with progeny earnings over $9 million dollars with just five crops of racing age and 45 percent winners. Twin Creeks Farm and Sequel continue to provide support secondary to his progeny success on the racetrack.

Multiple stakes winner Union Jackson is the first son of two-time Horse of the Year Curlin to stand in New York. He is out of Hot Dixie Chick, a Grade 1-winning half-sister to Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming. Standing in New York for a partnership between Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings and Sequel New York, his gorgeous first crop are looking to be very fast 2-year-olds of 2021.

Track record-setting, multiple graded stakes winner, Destin, a full brother to Grade 1 sire Creative Cause, was nosed in the Belmont Stakes. He is owned by a syndicate and is supported by Gainesway Farm, Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Twin Creeks Farm as well as Sequel New York.

Grade 2 Winner Air Strike To Stand At Ohio’s Duncan Farms In 2021

Grade 2 winner Air Strike (Street Sense-Omnitap by Tapit) has been acquired by Daryl and Sally Duncan and will enter stud at their Duncan Farms in Warsaw, Ohio in 2021.

Raced in partnership by Sol Kumin's Madaket Stables, Slam Dunk Racing and Michael Nentwig, Air Strike won the Grade 2 Triple Bend at Santa Anita (seven furlongs on the dirt), defeating the likes of multiple-graded stakes winners Cistron and American Anthem. He also twice finished fourth in the G1 Bing Crosby at Del Mar and the G1 Forego at Saratoga; the latter behind champion Mitole. He retired with career earnings of $338,810.

“We were looking to add a true dirt-sprint pedigree with some depth on the dam side, and we found it in Air Strike,” said Daryl Duncan.

That depth comes from his first dam, Omnitap by Tapit, who is a half-sister to three black type performers including multiple stakes winner Classify (by Unbridled's Song), stakes winner and multiple stakes placed Simplify (by Pulpit), and Grade 2-placed Seeker (by Hard Spun). Those stakes performers are all out of Air Strike's second dam, Classic Olympio (by Olympio), who won four stakes races and was multiple graded stakes-placed, all in dirt sprints.

Air Strike joins Duncan Farms' other graded stakes-winning stallions, Corfu (Grade 2 winner by Malibu Moon), and Fort Larned (three-time Grade 1 winner, Breeders' Cup Classic winner, and earner of over $4 million). He will stand his first season for $2,000 Live Foal.
