Arkansas Derby Preps Can Be Lasix-Free After State Signs Off On Revised Rule

Oaklawn Park will now have the ability to card Lasix-free stakes races after a state legislative review committee in Arkansas signed off on a series of racing rule changes Friday. According to the Daily Racing Form, Oaklawn can now fall into line with the new requirements by Churchill Downs that all qualifying points races for the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks must be run with 24-hour furosemide administration only.

Also among new rule changes are a reduction of furosemide dosage from 500 milligrams to 250 milligrams, and a 60-day prohibition on clenbuterol pre-race.

The move comes as 1/ST Racing announced that Gulfstream Park stakes races in 2021 will be run under the same condition. Churchill Downs, Keeneland, Del Mar, The Stronach Group, NYRA and others in the Thoroughbred Safety Coalition have called for gradual partial phaseout of the anti-bleeding medication pre-race over recent years. Several tracks carded races in 2020 with the new 24-hour Lasix administration time for 2-year-old races, and the second part of the phaseout calls for the same rule to apply to stakes races in 2021.

Ultimately, coalition organizers have said, they hope the new rules will give trainers a chance to see whether young racehorses really need the drug and to reduce the number of severe bleeders entering the gene pool. A multi-jurisdictional study is underway to study the prevalence of exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage in 2-year-olds under the new rules.

2021 Kentucky Derby: Churchill Planning For Reduced Capacity, To Utilize All-Inclusive Ticket Plan

Though this year's Kentucky Derby was pushed from the first Saturday in May back to Sept. 5 by the global COVID-19 pandemic, and held without fans in attendance, Churchill Downs is planning to have at least limited spectators for the 2021 Run for the Roses.

According to wkyt.com, the track sent a letter to premium ticket purchasers this week. Churchill indicated that it is “planning for a capacity in line with today's protocols,” but that officials are “hopeful that we may be able to extend seating options for additional guests as we get closer to the 2021 Derby and Oaks dates.”

New to the seating arrangements in 2021 will be an all-inclusive ticket plan, with food and beverages included, which is intended to reduce patrons' need to spend time in lines, the letter said.

The 2021 Kentucky Derby is scheduled for Saturday, May 1.

The Kentucky Derby Future Wagers provide fans of Thoroughbred racing with opportunities to place bets on possible entrants in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (Grade I) at odds that could be far greater and more attractive than those available on the day of the race. The 147th running of Kentucky Derby, America's greatest race and the first leg of the Triple Crown, is set for Saturday, May 1, 2021 at Churchill Downs.

Bets can be placed at Churchill Downs Racetrack, TwinSpires.com and other online wagering outlets and satellite wagering centers across North America.

There are no refunds in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager. Should Churchill Downs officials determine during the duration of this week's four-day pool that one of the wagering interests has experienced an injury, illness or other circumstance that would prevent the horse from participating in the Kentucky Derby, betting on the individual horse will be suspended immediately.

More information, Brisnet.com past performances and real-time odds on the Kentucky Derby Future Wager will be available before the pool opens Thursday online at https://www.kentuckyderby.com/wager/future-wager.
