A Foggy Morning In Derby Town: Enforceable Breezes Six Furlongs

Under foggy conditions at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., John Oxley's $200,000 Lecomte Stakes (Grade 3) winner Enforceable continued his preparation for the $3-million Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) with a six-furlong move on Sunday in 1:12.20 under jockey Adam Beschizza.

The fog moved into the Louisville area just past midnight and the conditions did not improve at the start of training on Sunday at 5:15 a.m. Enforceable, outside of stablemate Ghost Fighter (six furlongs, 1:13.80), worked from the five-furlong pole to the wire in :59.20 and the duo continued their work around the turn to the seven-eighths pole.

“It was a really good work from what I could see,” trainer Mark Casse said. “From the videos I've seen over the last couple of weeks I've been really excited how he's doing at Churchill. We're hoping that it is a fast early pace in the Derby because we know with his running style he'll be making a run from off the pace.”

Sunday's 7:30-7:45 a.m. training window for Kentucky Derby and Oaks only saw two participants: George Hall and SportBLXThoroughbreds' $1 million Travers Stakes (G1) third-place finisher Max Player and Juddmonte Farms' homebred Bonny South. Derby contender Max Player, ridden by Juan Vargas, galloped about 1 ½ miles while Oaks contender Bonny South, ridden by Gustavo Abrego, galloped about the same distance. Max Player is scheduled to breeze on Monday.

Other Kentucky Derby contenders on the track Sunday included Jim Bakke and Gerald Isbister's $200,000 Ellis Park Derby runner-up Attachment Rate, who worked a half-mile in :48.60 at 9 a.m. under exercise rider Faustino Herrarte. Attachment Rate is also nominated to the $500,000 Pat Day Mile presented by LG&E and KU (G2) on the Kentucky Derby undercard.

Lloyd Madison Farm's $300,000 Indiana Derby (G3) runner-up Major Fed returned to the track early Sunday morning following a scheduled walk day Saturday with a one-mile jog under exercise rider Margarito Fierro. Another Derby contender that returned to the track Sunday following a scheduled walk day was West Point Thoroughbreds and Pearl Racing's $600,000 Arkansas Derby (G1) third-place finisher Winning Impression, who jogged one-mile with exercise rider Emerson Chavez in the saddle.

Following his speedy five-furlong move in :58.20 on Saturday, Victoria Ranch's King Guillermo had a scheduled walk day along with fellow Derby contender Necker Island.

Bruce Lundsford's recent Ellis Park Derby hero Art Collector is scheduled to arrive back to trainer Tommy Drury's Churchill Downs base in the upcoming days and will have one local work prior to the Kentucky Derby.

On the Longines Kentucky Oaks front, $600,000 Alabama (GI) winner Swiss Skydiver is expected to arrive at Churchill Downs on Tuesday via plane from New York. Swiss Skydiver's main rival in the Oaks, multiple Grade I winner Gamine, is scheduled to arrive with the other Baffert trainees on Sunday, Aug. 31.

Kentucky Derby Notes: King Guillermo’s Fast Work, Tiz The Law’s One-Day Delay, Arrival Plans

On the first day of Churchill Downs' exclusive training period for contenders preparing for the $3-million Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve (Grade 1) and $1.25 million Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1), Victoria's Ranch's King Guillermo posted a flashy five-furlong move Saturday in :58.20 – the fastest of 40 horses at the distance.

Trained by Juan Avila, King Guillermo was one of two Kentucky Derby contenders on the track from 7:30-7:45 a.m. (all times Eastern). The $600,000 Arkansas Derby (G1) runner-up rolled through splits of :11.40, :23, :34.80 and :46.60 with a strong six-furlong gallop out in 1:10.80 under jockey Miguel Mena. Florida-based rider Samy Camacho will ride on the first Saturday in September.

“You can sometimes get a little bit worried when horses work that fast but he did it so effortlessly,” Mena said. “He has an unbelievable stride and is pretty tough in the bridle. When I broke off from the pony, he really wanted to go. He continued out really well around the turn and onto the backside.”

The main track was listed as “muddy” to start training on Saturday but was upgraded to “good” following the 7 a.m. renovation break. Saturday also was the first morning of updated training hours which were adjusted 15 minutes earlier to 5:15-10 a.m.

Raymond Daniels and Wayne Scherr's former $100,000 claim Necker Island also was on the track during the exclusive training window. The chestnut colt galloped about 1 1/2 miles under Hillary Hartman, the wife of his trainer Chris Hartman.

The next expected local workout for the Kentucky Derby will be Enforceable at 5:15 a.m. on Sunday. Sackatoga Stable's Kentucky Derby favorite Tiz the Law had his scheduled Saturday work delayed until Sunday due to inclement weather at Saratoga in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.. … Trainer Tommy Drury reported Friday following Blue Grass Stakes (G2) winner Art Collector's half-mile move in :49.10 at Skylight that the colt would likely ship from his Goshen, Ky. base to Louisville early next week

Tiz The Law Even-Money Favorite In Final Kentucky Derby Future Wager

Four weeks in advance of the rescheduled $3-million Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (Grade I), Belmont Stakes (Grade I) and Travers Stakes (GI) winner Tiz the Law is the clear-cut horse to beat in the eyes of bettors as he closed as the even-money favorite Sunday in Pool 7 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager.

If the future wager is any indication, Tiz the Law, a winner in six of his seven starts and an earner of $2,015,300, could be the shortest-priced Kentucky Derby favorite since Arazi finished eighth at odds of 4-5 in 1992. The only other horse to start at less than 2-1 odds during that span was Point Given, who finished fifth as the 9-5 choice in 2001.

Sackatoga Stables' Tiz the Law, trained by Barclay Tagg and ridden by Manny Franco, has been either the first or second individual favorite in every Future Wager pool since last November: Pool 1 (11-1); Pool 2 (8-1); Pool 3 (7-1); Pool 4 (5-1); Pool 5 (2-1); Pool 6 (5-2); and Pool 7 (1-1).

On March 17, Churchill Downs Incorporated announced the 146th running of the Kentucky Derby (GI), the 1 1/4-mile classic for 3-year-old Thoroughbreds, would be rescheduled from May 2 to Saturday, Sept. 5 amid public health concerns in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kentucky Governor Fields Questions About Derby Spectators, Watching State’s COVID Numbers Carefully

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear told press Tuesday that he will meet with officials at Churchill Downs next week to confer about safety protocols for this year's Kentucky Derby. Beshear answered questions from reporters after an announcement that the Indy 500 will take place with no fans.

Beshear said that if the race were about to be run in the coming days, he would like to see changes to the track's plan, which calls for reduced capacity in all areas of the facility. According to the Louisville Courier-Journal, plans approved by Beshear in May call for a 33 percent capacity in outdoor dining areas, 61 percent fewer general admission tickets, and 57 percent less outdoor seating. Churchill Downs officials said on an earnings call last week that the track had stopped selling its limited offer of general admission tickets recently despite not selling out.

The Courier-Journal reported Churchill Downs staff are in regular communication with Beshear's office and public health officials and will be monitoring COVID-19 statistics particularly closely through the next week. Daily statewide totals of coronavirus positives have increased sharply from what they were in March and April. The state's positivity rate has also climbed to 5.24 percent Tuesday based on a seven-day rolling average. State health officials have urged Kentucky residents to avoid travel to states experiencing spikes in COVID-19 positives, and to quarantine for two weeks after returning from travel to states with a 15 percent positivity rate or higher.
