Good Magic Represented By First Winner at Churchill

Curly Jack gave his Eclipse-winning young sire Good Magic his first winner with a stylish debut victory at Churchill Downs Thursday afternoon. Given a 4-1 chance, the $180,000 KEESEP acquisition was away without issue from his rail draw and tugged his way up the fence to seize the early advantage, clocking a :22.33 opening quarter. Pressed by Boxster (West Coast) through a :45.62 half-mile, the bay dispatched that foe with ease in the lane, rolling clear to a four-length score.

GISP Connie and Michael is also responsible for the SP 3-year-old filly Fannie and Freddie (Malibu Moon). Her most recent produce is a yearling colt by Gun Runner. Connie and Michael is a half to graded winners High Ridge Road (Quality Road) and Senor Rojo (Out of Place).

Good Magic broke his maiden in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile, resulting in an Eclipse Award. The GI Haskell Invitational S. winner stands alongside his sire Curlin at Hill 'n' Dale for $30,000.

Honor Code Juvenile Romps at Woodbine

2nd-Woodbine, C$107,630, Msw, 5-21, 2yo, 4 1/2f (AWT), :51.58, ft, 5 1/2 lengths.
STAYHONOR GOODSIDE (c, 2, Honor Code–Nicki Knew {SW, $386,114}, by Tethra) was favored at 6-5 in this debut and made it look like a gift with a dominant debut score at Woodbine Saturday. Away alertly, the $85,000 KEESEP buy contested the early pace and slammed the door on his rivals in the lane to win for fun by 5 1/2 lengths over Captive Silence (Silent Name {Jpn}). The winner is a half to Imperial Dream (Stormy Atlantic), SW, $156,137 and is the first winner for his dam since that one, Nicki Knew only producing two surviving foals in the eight years between them. There was no report in 2021 but Stayhonor Goodside has a 2022 half-sister by Caravaggio. This is the family of millionaire and MG1SW Hawk Wing (Woodman), GSW turned group-stakes producer Race for the Stars (Fusaichi Pegasus), and Canadian Horse of the Year & Champion grass horse Thornfield (Sky Classic). The colt's name came about by way of a contest on the TDN Writers' Room podcast, when D.J. Stable General Manager Jon Green challenged listeners to come up with a clever name based on the colt's breeding as part of a promotion sponsored by Lane's End Farm. Uncle Mo Colt Summons $2.3M at OBS

A colt by Coolmore super sire Uncle Mo (Hip 206) inspired a furious round of bidding during the opening session of the OBS Spring Sale Tuesday, hammering for $2.3 million to bloodstock agent Gary Young, who was acting on behalf of Amr Zedan. Young did his bidding alongside Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, who will train the colt at the conclusion of his suspension. Coolmore was the underbidder on the bay colt. Consigned by Jimbo & Torie Gladwell's Top Line Sales, the :9 4/5 breezer, who is out of Borealis Night (Astrology), was purchased by Scott & Evan Dilworth for $250,000 at Keeneland September.

Filly From The Lieutenant’s Sole Crop Breezes Bullet at OBS

GSW The Lieutenant (Street Sense), a half-brother to Triple Crown winner Justify, had just one crop before his life was tragically cut short and a filly from that lone crop as among the bullet breezers during the seventh and final session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's Spring Sale under-tack show Saturday.

Bred and consigned by Becky Thomas's Sequel New York, which stood The Lieutenant, Hip 1123 covered a quarter-mile in :20 4/5.

“She preps well, is a beautiful mover and always trained like that,” Thomas said. “I felt pretty confident. I wasn't sure what we were going to be [time wise], because you never know what the track is like until you go out there, but I knew she would be very quick.”

Campaigned by Mr. & Mrs. William Warren and trainer Mike McCarthy, The Lieutenant won four of 15 races, topped by the GIII All American S. Retired to Sequel at the end of his half-brother's Horse of the Year season in 2018, the bay covered just one season in New York, resulting in 32 foals, after which he was shuttled to Peru. Sadly, he was one of four stallions killed by intruders at Haras Barlovente in Canete in December of 2019.

“It was a terrible loss,” Thomas said. “Mike [McCarthy] said this horse was training lights out with [MGISW] City of Light. He said, 'I love this horse and he is a really talented horse.” He is also a half to Justify, obviously. He was a Street Sense and a big, beautiful horse. We were very lucky to have him.”

As for what she sees in his sole crop, Thomas said, “They are really speedy. I have a couple going to Maryland that are flat runners too and I feel really good about them.”

Two other fillies worked in :20 4/5 Saturday: a daughter of Uncaptured (Hip 1084) (video) and a Curlin filly (Hip 602) (video). Four more fillies went in :9 4/5: a daughter of Into Mischief (Hip 1097) (video), an Army Mule filly (Hip 1131) (video), a filly by Munnings (Hip 1174) (video) and a Firing Line filly (Hip 1226) (video).

The OBS Spring Sale begins its four-day run Tuesday at 10:30 a.m.
