Goffs Million Transformed Into Goffs Two Million Series Beginning At 2023 Orby Sale

The Goffs Million, the richest 2-year-old race in Europe, will be rebranded as the Goffs Two Million Series at the 2023 Goffs Orby Sale, the sales company announced on Friday.

In addition, the Orby and Sportsman's Sales will now be known as Orby Book 1 and Orby Book 2 and will be held from Sept. 26-29. The series is open to all yearlings catalogued in the 2023 Goffs Orby Book 1 and Book 2, and more than 1,000 yearlings will be offered across the two books. The 2023 seven-furlong Goffs Million is open to qualified graduates of the 2022 Orby Sale, will have a guaranteed minimum value of €1 million, and will be conducted at the Curragh on Saturday, Sept. 23.

The Goffs Two Million Series will incorporate:

  • The Goffs Million, contested over seven furlongs at the Curragh on the Saturday before the 2024 sale. With a guaranteed minimum prize fund of €1 million, and offer prize-money to 10th place.
  • The Goffs 500, contested over seven furlongs at The Curragh on the Saturday before the 2024 sale. With a guaranteed minimum prize fund of €500,000 and prize money to 10th place, it will be staged on the same day as the Goffs Million ensuring that at least €1.5 Million is open to Orby graduates on the eve of the 2024 Orby Sale.
  • The Goffs €50,000 Bonus Series which will see €50,000 Goffs Bonuses awarded to the winners of a series of 2-year-old maidens run throughout the 2024 season at various Irish racecourses when that winner is a qualified Orby graduate. A programme of diverse 2-year-old maidens carrying the unique Goffs €50,000 Bonus will be published with a total of €500,000 distributed to 10 winning connections between the start of the season and Million Day at the Curragh.

“The new Goffs Two Million Series takes the Million concept to a new level and seeks to make the Irish National Yearling Sale unmissable for both Irish breeders and international buyers,” Goffs Group Chief Executive Harry Beeby said. “The primary issue facing British and Irish racing is prize-money and this initiative confronts it head on as we evolve the idea and provide a huge pay day where the focus is on the owners and trainers that invest in Orby yearlings as well as spreading the rewards throughout the season and across the country.

“Orby Book 1 and Book 2 are designed to represent the best of Irish yearlings at all levels of the market and our call to Irish breeders is to support the Irish National Yearling Sale with your best as Goffs will deliver and exceed your expectations. Goffs will continue to invest in our global buyer attraction campaign that saw so many buyers at Kildare Paddocks last year and the only complaint was that they wanted more top tier yearlings as they have the orders and don't go elsewhere. This latest attraction will only drive more buyers to Orby to buy as their first choice.”

Brian Kavanagh, Chief Executive at The Curragh, added, “Goffs are a long and highly valued partner here at the Curragh and are a pleasure to work with. They are always innovating, and the new Goffs Two Million Series is a perfect example of this approach. It will provide a major incentive to owners who purchase yearlings at the Irish National Yearling Sale and create an enhanced race day experience at the Curragh the weekend before their sale. There was great excitement when Galeron (Ire) (Camacho {Ire}) took the first Million race here last September and the addition of the second race and the 2-year-old bonus series will bring this incentive to a higher level. Goffs also sponsor the G1 Vincent O'Brien National S. on Irish Champions Weekend and their graduates regularly win our best races here at the Curragh. We greatly look forward to working with them on this new venture–the Goffs Two Million Series.”

Gulfstream’s Juvenile Racing Season Kicks Off Friday

The racing season for 2-year-olds at Gulfstream Park will kick off Friday, when a field of four colts and three fillies are scheduled to debut in a $65,000 maiden special weight event.

Carded as Race 2, the 4 ½-furlong dash has attracted several entrants with stakes pedigrees, including Noble Present, a half-sister to Ceci Valentina, a multiple-stakes winner who has earned more than $277,000. Noble Present's owner/breeder Amalio Ruiz-Lozano and trainer Angel Rodriguez campaigned Ceci Valentina, who captured the $200,000 Florida Sire Stakes Susan's Girl at Gulfstream, as well as Gulfstream Park West's Juvenile Filly Sprint, in 2019.

Noble Present was sired by Noble Bird, a Grade 1 winner who earned more than $1.3 million. Rodriguez is also scheduled to saddle Ruiz-Lozano's Rayo, a Florida-bred son of Long Island Sound. Leonel Reyes has the mount aboard Noble Present, while Jesus Rios has the call on Rayo.

Arindel's Quinoa Tifah kicked off the 2020 juvenile racing season at Gulfstream will an upset victory last April. Arindel will be represented in Friday's race by Merlin, a homebred son of Brethren who is a full brother to multiple stakes-placed Genghis. Edgard Zayas has the call aboard the Arindel homebred.

Super Super Stable's Wow Tapit will bring a solid pedigree into Friday's race. The Amador Sanchez-trained daughter of Cairo Prince is out of a Tapit mare whose second dam is Saoirse, a multiple-graded stakes winner in Canada and the U.S. who won the 2000 Sovereign Award as Canada's champion older filly or mare. Hector Berrios has been named to ride the filly who was bred in Kentucky by Calumet.

Joker Racing LLC's Kitodan, a son of Point of Entry out of an Unbridled's Song mare, is set to debut for trainer Jorge Delgado. Kitodan is a half-brother to graded stakes-placed Market King, who ran without success in the 2019 Preakness (G1). Paco Lopez, who celebrated reaching the 3000-win milestone Saturday, has the mount.

Owner/trainer Daniel Pita enjoyed success last year with juvenile filly Princess Secret, who won her debut before going on to win the $200,000 FSS Susan's Girl and $400,000 FSS My Dear Girl. Pita's Broadway Belle, a daughter of Khozan whose dam was stakes-placed five times, is set to debut in Friday's race. Miguel Vasquez has the call on the Florida-bred filly.

Bella Inizio Farm's LLC's Laki Lio, a Jenna Antonucci-trained son of Ride on Curlin, rounds out the field. Angel Arroyo has been named to ride the homebred colt.

Several entrants are eligible for the 2021 Florida Sire Stakes series that will get underway in August.

Maryland Jockey Club Announces Intent Write No-Lasix 2-Year-Old Races

The Maryland Jockey Club sent a letter to the Maryland Racing Commission this week indicating the intent to begin writing 2-year-old races which prohibit the administration of Lasix withing 24 hours of the race, according to the Thoroughbred Daily News.

“The time has come to phase out Lasix beginning with 2-year-old horses,” said Belinda Stronach, Chairman and President, The Stronach Group and 1/ST. “We are following through on 1/ST Racing's commitment to put horse and rider safety and welfare at the forefront. We believe in the principle that horses should only be racing free of medication. By taking this important step together, the Maryland racing community will become stronger and provide the right foundation for our sport to progress into the future.”

The Maryland Commission told the Daily Racing Form it would have no comment on the letter until it determined the legality of the decision.

“The fundamental question is whether they have the authority to do this under current Maryland law,” Alan Foreman, the general counsel to the Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association, told drf.com.
