1000 Guineas Heroine Mother Earth Retired to Coolmore Stud

Classic-winning filly Mother Earth (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) has been retired to Coolmore Stud with her trainer Aidan O'Brien describing last year's G1 Qipco 1000 Guineas heroine as “a top-class mare”.

As well as winning the 1000 Guineas under Frankie Dettori, Mother Earth stormed to G1 Prix Rothschild glory at Deauville for Ryan Moore last term but was retired after failing to fire in the G2 Duke Of Cambridge S. at Royal Ascot last week.

O'Brien told TDN Europe, “Mother Earth was a very good filly. She ran a lot as a 2-year-old and also ran a lot at three. She was a top-class mare.”

He added, “She won the Guineas and the Prix Rothschild and was a filly with loads of speed. She had an unbelievable constitution and is an absolutely beautiful filly.”

Mother Earth won four of her 21 starts on a racecourse, twice at the highest level, and landed the G3 Park Express S.  at the Curragh on her return earlier this season. TDN Europe understands that Coolmore will wait until next year before mating her.

She is a half-sister to G2 Premio Dormello-winning Night Colours (Ire) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) and will take up residency as a broodmare at Coolmore Stud in Ireland.

‘Unexpected Superstar’ Eileendover Takes up Broodmare Duties

Pam Sly has brought the curtain down on the career of Eileendover (GB) (Canford Cliffs {Ire}), who she described as being an “unlikely superstar,” with the mare set to be covered by Juddmonte's Bated Breath (GB) after picking up an injury in training.

A granddaughter of Speciosa (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), who stormed to 1000 Guineas glory for Sly in 2006, Eileendover made the transition from being a classy bumper mare to competing in listed races on the Flat.

She won four times, including a listed bumper at Market Rasen, and achieved black-type on the level when third behind Trueshan (Fr) (Planteur {Ire}) at Nottingham in the Listed Further Flight S. on her comeback last month.

While the injury she picked up was not reported to be serious by Sly, it will take up to a year to recover from, which is why the trainer has opted to cover the 5-year-old, who she admits is unlikely to grace the track again.

Sly said, “She just knocked her leg, that is why she didn't go to York. I would say she will be on the sidelines [for] a while, so I'm going to get her covered by Bated Breath rather than wait a year and you don't really know how long it will be.”

The trainer added, “She's not lame or anything, those sort of things just take a while to heal and there's only time that does it. I'm sure everything will go all right and she's been a totally unexpected superstar.”

“It will probably [be the end of her racing career], she's five now and she's got her bits of black type, thank heavens.”

Limiti Di Greccio And Inspiral To Miss Irish 1000 Guineas

Limiti Di Greccio (Ire) (Elzaam {Aus}) and Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}), both of whom held prominent positions in the betting for Sunday's G1 Irish 1000 Guineas, have been ruled out of making their respective seasonal return in the Curragh Classic.

Paddy Twomey, who trains Limiti Di Greccio, told TDN Europe that his hugely exciting filly will be aimed at races in the autumn after she encountered “a small training problem” while connections of G1 winning 2-year-old Inspiral are charting a path towards the G1 Coronation S. at Royal Ascot with their charge.

Inspiral failed to sparkle in a key gallop under Frankie Dettori on Saturday, after which, her joint-trainer John Gosden advised connections to skip the Irish 1000 Guineas and wait for Royal Ascot.

Speaking on Monday, Cheveley Park's Chris Richardson said, “She's not going to Ireland. John's recommendation is let's go straight to Royal Ascot for the Coronation Stakes.”

Inspiral, unbeaten in four starts as a 2-year-old, with that brilliant juvenile campaign culminating with G1 Fillies' Mile glory at Newmarket, was also ruled out of the 1,000 Guineas last month with Richardson explaining at the time that the filly had not been “100 per cent straightforward” in the spring.

Connections are now concentrating on having Inspiral in top shape ahead of the Royal meeting.

Richardson added, “Frankie had a sit on her on Saturday and just felt we needed a little bit more time, so we'll give her that and hopefully have her cherry-ripe and spot on for the Royal meeting.”

Time is also what Limiti Di Greccio needs, according to Twomey, who pointed to the G1 Matron Stakes in the autumn as being the new target for Martin Schwarz-owned filly.

Twomey said, “She picked up a minor training setback and is not ready to run at the Curragh on Sunday.”

He added, “The plan is to train her with a view towards the second half of the season where races like the Matron Stakes could be targeted.”

In the absence of Limiti Di Greccio and Inspiral, the Aidan O'Brien-trained Tuesday (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Dermot Weld's Homeless Songs (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), herself having skipped Newmarket and more recently ParisLongchamp, are general 5-2 joint-favourites for the Irish 1000 Guineas.

Cachet to Attempt 1000 Guineas Double

Trainer George Boughey told At The Races Friday that he would attempt the English-French Guineas double with G1 QIPCO 1000 Guineas heroine Cachet (Ire) (Aclaim {Ire}). The 'TDN Rising Star' will travel to ParisLongchamp for the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches on May 15. The race comes just 14 days after her English Guineas win.

Sunday, after the Guineas, her trainer George Boughey said the filly would be pointed to the June 17 G1 Coronation S. at Ascot for her next start, her next step on her way to a start in the Breeders' Cup at Keeneland in the autumn, saying she loved fast ground. But Friday, he reversed course.

“Next weekend, we are going to run in France,” he told At The Races. “As long as the track doesn't turn into a quagmire, that's our plan. This morning, she was in great form. All the lights are green. She's got an extraordinary mind.”

Only four fillies in history have successfully attempted the double: Imprudence II (Fr) (Canot {Fr}) in 1947, Miesque (Nureyev) in 1987, Ravinella (Mr. Prospector) in 1988 and Special Duty (GB) (Hennessy) in 2010. Last year, Mother Earth (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) was beaten by Coeursamba (Fr) (The Wow Signal {Ire}) at ParisLongchamp after having won at Newmarket.
