Stars Of Tomorrow: Grade 1-Placed Generous Tipper Leads Seven Rivals For Sunday’s Street Sense

Walking L Thoroughbreds' Generous Tipper, the recent third-place finisher in the Breeders' Futurity (Grade 1), tops a field of eight 2-year-olds that entered Sunday's 11th running of the $200,000 Street Sense Stakes (G3) on “Stars of Tomorrow I” at Churchill Downs.

The 1 1/16-mile Street Sense Stakes is the featured event on opening day of the 21-day Fall Meet. The 11-race program will feature all 2-year-old racing. First post is 1 p.m. (all times Eastern) and the Street Sense will go as Race 10 of 11 at 5:35 p.m. Two races prior to the Street Sense is the $200,000 Rags to Riches Stakes (Listed) for 2-year-old fillies.

The Street Sense is part of the Road to the Kentucky Derby Prep Season where the top five finishers will be awarded points on a 10-5-3-2-1 scale towards qualifying for the 150th Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve. The Rags to Riches will award points to the top five finishers on the same scale for the Road to the Kentucky Oaks.

Generous Tipper, trained by Kenny McPeek, was a 7 ½-length maiden special weight winner on closing day of the Ellis Park meet in late August. The son of this race's namesake, Street Sense, finished third to Locked and The Wine Steward three weeks ago in the Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland. Jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. will retain the mount from the rail.

The Street Sense field also includes eye-catching debut winner Parchment Party. Owned by Pin Oak Stud and trained by Bill Mott, Parchment Party rallied from 11 lengths off the early pace to win a 1 1/16-mile maiden special weight on Sept. 15 at Churchill Downs. The son of Constitution will once again be ridden by James Graham from post No. 5.

Other Street Sense entrants include Iroquois (G3) third-place finisher Liberal Arts; Belmont at Aqueduct eight-length maiden winner Moonlight; and gutsy Churchill Downs maiden special weight winner Informed Patriot.

Here is the complete Street Sense field from the rail out (with jockey and trainer):

  1. Generous Tipper (Hernandez, McPeek);
  2. Gettysburg Address (Flavien Prat, Brad Cox);
  3. Northern Flame (Julien Leparoux, McPeek);
  4. Moonlight (Luis Saez, Todd Pletcher);
  5. Parchment Party (Graham, Mott);
  6. Informed Patriot (Tyler Gaffalione, Steve Asmussen);
  7. Barksdale (Alex Achard, Will Walden); and
  8. Liberal Arts (Cristian Torres, Robert Medina).

Last year's Street Sense Stakes winner was Two Phil's, who went on to finish second in the Kentucky Derby.

Sunday is the first of two Stars of Tomorrow programs during the Churchill Downs' 134th Fall Meet. Inaugurated in 2005, Churchill Downs' Stars of Tomorrow programs have helped launch the careers of numerous graded stakes winners, including more than 50 Grade I winners led by Horse of the Year champions Gun Runner (2017) and Rachel Alexandra (2009); Kentucky Derby winners Super Saver (2010) and Mandaloun (2021); and Longines Kentucky Oaks winners Rachel Alexandra (2009), Believe You Can (2012), Monomoy Girl (2018) and Secret Oath (2022).

Following Sunday's card, live racing at Churchill Downs will continue on a Wednesday-Sunday schedule through Nov. 26. Daily first post will be 1 p.m. except for Thanksgiving Day program which has a special early post of 11:30 a.m.
