Silent Runner is aiming extend his lead in the 2022 Ontario Sire Heritage Series when he enters the starting gate in the $100,000 Lake Erie Stakes Tuesday at Fort Erie Race Track, on the undercard of the 87th running of the $400,000 Prince of Wales, the second jewel of the Canadian Triple Crown.
Silent Runner was victorious last time out in the $100,000 Lake Huron for Ontario Sired colts and geldings, a five-furlong sprint over the inner turf on Aug. 12 at Woodbine Racetrack. The Lake Erie is a six-furlong contest over the Fort Erie dirt track.
During his one-month layoff the Silent Name (JPN) 3-year-old has breezed over the Woobdine dirt track to prepare for his racing debut over the surface, covering five furlongs on Sept. 3 in 58.60.
David Moran will be in the irons for the Lake Erie. The veteran jockey has been up top for all four of Silent Runner's career victories.
A win in leg two of the Ontario Sire Heritage Series would position the gelding well for one of the bonuses available to the top-three finishers in the overall rankings at the end of the series: $20,000 for first-place $10,000 for second place, and $5000 for third-place.
Joining Silent Runner in the field is Lake Huron runner-up Bossy Holiday. The Tall Oaks farm homebred has a record of 2-1-0 from nine career starts. Luis Contreras returns to the irons for trainer Josie Carroll.
A total of six horses are entered in the Lake Erie, race two on the eleven race card.
The female half of the second leg of the Ontario Sire Heritage Series will also be contested on the Prince of Wales card, with the $100,000 Rondeau Bay Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at six-furlongs over the dirt.
Just as with the Lake Erie, the top-two finishers from leg one the $100,000 Georgian Bay on August 12 are returning for leg two.
Breathing Fire, a Signature Red filly, won the opener by almost three lengths with an impressive closing kick.
The Sid Attard trainee is looking for his third consecutive on the board stakes finish. She was third in the Alywow Stakes on July 9 at Woodbine Racetrack.
Justin Stein gets the mount for owner's Norseman Racing Stable.
Pleausure's Gold has had an impressive 3-year-old campaign to date with a record of 1-2-1 from 4 starts.
Also trained by an Attard, Sid's brother Tino, the Souper Speedy Filly will look to earn her first stakes victory in the Rondeau Bay.
