High-profile jockeys Ryan Moore and Irad Ortiz, Jr. each exited this year's Breeders' Cup World Championships with both winning rides and stewards' rulings.
Ryan Moore was fined $20,800 (or 10 percent of his personal purse winnings) for using his whip seven times, once above the permitted six strikes, in a winning ride aboard Auguste Rodin in the Breeders' Cup Turf. The top international jockey was also suspended one racing day (Nov. 12), and assigned three penalty points for a masterful ride that saw him send the 3-year-old Deep Impact colt through a tight spot on the rail en route to victory.
Irad Ortiz, Jr., winner of the Bill Shoemaker Award for three Breeders' Cup victories this weekend, has been issued a suspension of three racing days for his winning ride aboard Filly & Mare Sprint champion Goodnight Olive. According to the Equibase chart, Ortiz drifted in front of Society in the stretch run; i.e., what the stewards called, “failure to maintain a straight course in the stretch and causing interference.”
The dates for Ortiz' suspension are set for Nov. 12, 17, and 18. Agent Steve Rushing, told TDN that Ortiz has not decided whether he will appeal the ruling.
