Rosario Suspended One Racing Day For Whip Violation Aboard Clairiere In Distaff

Jockey Joel Rosario has been issued a $900 fine and has been suspended one racing day after he violated national whip use rules in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Distaff.

Rosario finished third aboard Clairiere in a thrilling blanket finish in that race. Only two noses separated Malathaat, Blue Stripe, and Clairiere at the wire.

According to a stewards' ruling issued Nov. 9, Rosario struck Clairiere seven times with the crop, one hit over the six strikes limit.

The ruling stated Rosario will serve his suspension on Nov. 16.

He will also be assessed three points on his license for the violation. The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority's rules created a point system for multiple violations so that repeat offenders would eventually have penalties compounded. Riders with 11 to 15 points on their license would get an additional seven days of suspension on top of the penalty for the newest violation; riders with 16 to 20 points get an additional 15 days, and riders with 21 or more points could get 30 additional days.

Points do expire between six months and one year post-violation on a sliding scale based on the violation class assigned to them.
