Talented turf sprinter Imprimis will not make begin his 8-year-old campaign in Saturday's Silks Run Stakes at Gulfstream Park due to a recently-developed ankle issue, trainer Joe Orseno told the Daily Racing Form.
The Silks Run, which Imprimis won in 2019, would have been the gelding's first start since the Kentucky Downs Turf Sprint on Sept. 11, in which he finished 10th.
“He'd had a second throat operation after his last race,” Orseno told DRF, “and then just the other day he had an ankle flare up on me. It looks like normal wear-and-tear, but we've sent him out to Ocala to have him thoroughly diagnosed.”
Owned by the Breeze Easy partnership of Mike Hall and Sam Ross, Imprimis has won nine of his 21 career starts for earnings of $883,483. A Florida-bred son of Broken Vow, Imprimis' biggest wins have come in the G2 Shakertown (2019) at Keeneland and the G3 Runhappy Turf Sprint (2020) at Kentucky Downs.
If Imprimis' health returns, Orseno mentioned targeting the Twin Spires Turf Sprint at Churchill Downs during Kentucky Derby week. If not, the gelding could be retired.
