Lucky Seven Stable's classy 3-year-old colt Rattle N Roll achieved Grade 1 glory in last year's $500,000 Breeders' Futurity (G1) and will attempt to find the winner's circle for the first time since that feat in Saturday's $200,000 American Derby (Listed) at Churchill Downs.
The 1 1/16-mile American Derby was originally scheduled on turf but will now be run on the main track. The American Derby is one of five stakes events Saturday and is on the undercard of the $750,000 Stephen Foster (G2). The other stakes are the $350,000 Fleur de Lis (G2), $200,000 Tepin (Listed) and $160,000 Kelly's Landing. Post time of the American Derby is 3:55 p.m. as Race 7. The first of 12 races will get underway at 12:45 p.m.
Trained by Kenny McPeek, Rattle N Roll recently finished third in the $225,000 Matt Winn (G3). The chestnut son of Connect scored a 4 ¼-length win in the Oct. 9 Breeders' Futurity under jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. Rattle N Roll will once again be ridden by Hernandez and drew post No. 9.
Other top contenders in the American Derby include WinStar Farm and Siena Farm's recent allowance winner Kuchar and $200,000 Audubon Stakes winner Kitodan.
