The $1-million Queen's Plate is the top race for Canadian-born 3-year-olds, but it's also highly coveted by connections south of the border.
In this first edition of the Queen's Plate News Minute, Paulick Report bloodstock editor Joe Nevills visited the Saratoga barns of the two U.S.-based trainers with probables for the first leg of the Canadian Triple Crown.
Mark Casse, a two-time Queen's Plate winner with a perennially strong Canadian presence, will send Plate Trial Stakes winner Sir for Sure and runner-up Hall of Dreams to Sunday's race. The colts have taken a unique path to the race, having wintered over the new all-weather Tapeta surface at Gulfstream Park – the same brand of footings that comprise Woodbine's main track.
Todd Pletcher plans to send Causin' Mayhem to Woodbine after finishing third in the Plate Trial. The colt will be the only horse in the Queen's Plate field to ship in for the race, and Pletcher discussed how he thinks the trip will sway his performance.
The Queen's Plate will take place Sunday, Aug. 21 at Woodbine, with an estimated post time at 5:47 p.m. Eastern.
