Stonestreet Stables LLC's homebred Grade 1 winner Pauline's Pearl struck for her second consecutive triumph in the $300,000 Houston Ladies Classic (G3) Saturday at Sam Houston Race Park.
Stewart Elliott was aboard the 5-year-old Tapit mare for a 1 ¾-length tally over graded stakes winner Hidden Connection, who set the early pace but tired late in the stretch. She Can't Sing finished third in the field of six older fillies and mares.
Pauline's Pearl completed the 1 1/16-mile race in 1:45.69 on a muddy track. She returned $10.20 for the win.
After stalking the pace from third, then second, Sixtythreecaliber, the 8-5 favorite, had no rally and finished last.
Produced by Grade 1 winner Hot Dixie Chick, by Dixie Union, Pauline's Pearl captured the 2022 edition of the race for trainer Steve Asmussen and followed up with an top-level win in the La Troienne (G1) at Churchill Downs. With Saturday's victory, her record improves to 7-3-3 from 16 lifetime starts and $1,873,400 in earnings.
Asmussen got his fourth win in the Houston Ladies Classic. He also captured the 2019 edition with the season's champion older dirt female, Midnight Bisou, and the 2020 running with Lady Apple.
