Robertson Sweeps Wednesday’s State-Bred Stakes At Canterbury Park

Hot Shot Kid and jockey Francisco Arietta waited patiently behind the pace set by 1 to 9 favorite Mr. Jagermeister before taking aim in mid-stretch to win Wednesday's six furlong 10,000 Lakes Stakes at Canterbury Park by 1 1/2 lengths.

The showdown between the two all-time leading Minnesota-bred moneys earners played out according to script as Mr. Jagermeister, under rider Leandro Goncalves, was sent to the lead but pushed along early by Hot Shot Kid's stablemate Cinco Star through fractions of 21.96 and 44.11 seconds. Hot Shot Kid, never further than 4 1/2 lengths behind, closed on the outside to win in 1:09.45 while Mr. Jagermeister settled for second place 1 1/2 lengths in front of Fireman Oscar.

The winner, owned by Warren Bush, paid $11.20.

“Things went Hot Shot Kid's way today,” trainer Mac Robertson said. “I expect there will be a rematch.”

Hot Shot Kid earned $30,000 of the $50,000 stakes purse, boosting his lifetime earnings to $575, 404. Mr. Jagermeister has earnings of $588,364.

Robertson's evening was not finished as he also trained the winner of the $50,000 Lady Slipper Stakes, Ready to Runaway. Rider Alex Canchari and Ready to Runaway sat just off Ari Gia before pulling away in the stretch to win by 3 3/4 lengths in 1:09.71. Ari Gia faded to sixth. Pinup Girl closed to finish second with Firstmate finishing third. Ready to Runaway is owned by John Mentz. She paid $3.20 to win as the wagering favorite.

War Front’s Battleground On Top In the Chesham

Fifth on debut over six furlongs at Naas June 8, Battleground (War Front) took a step forward to win the Listed Chesham S. as the 11-4 favourite for a 73rd Royal winner for Aidan O’Brien. Always travelling strongly tracking the pace under Ryan Moore, the first foal out of the brilliant Arc heroine Found (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) took over from March Law (Ire) (Lawman {Fr}) with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining and stayed on strongly to beat that rival by 2 1/2 lengths, with the sole filly Seattle Rock (GB) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) 1 3/4 lengths back in third.

Mark Taylor Joins TDN Writers’ Room to Talk Sale Market, Not This Time

As the sale season finally restarts, Taylor Made vice president Mark Taylor joined the TDN Writers’ Room presented by Keeneland this week to discuss where he sees the market going from here, the early success of Taylor Made stallion Not This Time (Giant’s Causeway) and a host of other hot-button industry issues.

Calling in via Zoom as the Green Group Guest of the Week on the heels of OBS Spring, Taylor said, “I don’t see any scenario where the market’s not going to be off from 2019. I think just [with] everything that we’ve been through, it’s just too much to overcome not to expect some decline. I was actually relieved a little bit from the OBS results. I thought that it could have been worse … With the high volume of horses they have there, you really rely on a lot of those foreign buyers that come in to pick up a lot of those horses. And with some travel restrictions, logistical problems, and just fear factor, I think the participation from those groups was noticeably down. And that’s really a struggle. We need those buyers.”

Taylor Made Stallions has been the early winner of the freshman sire race with 2016 GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile runner-up Not This Time being represented by several impressive maiden breakers and the topper at OBS Spring when a filly from his first crop sold for $1.35 million.

“It was fantastic,” Taylor said. “When you’re in the stallion game, that’s what really breathes hope into your whole organization. When you can get a horse that’s starting to gain momentum and you think there’s a lot of blue sky there … He had really elite level talent. And now his babies are showing that they can run. But still, we’re in the first four miles of a marathon. So we’re just hoping that it keeps going.”

Elsewhere in the show, the crew previewed Saturday’s GI Belmont S. card and the action at Royal Ascot and, in the West Point Thoroughbreds news segment, had a spirited debate about the new whip restrictions introduced in California and Kentucky. Mapping Out a Trifecta Play for the Jaipur Stakes
