Classic Winner Kew Gardens Retired

Kew Gardens (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}-Chelsea Rose {Ire}, by Desert King), winner of the 2018 G1 St Leger, has been retired from racing and will enter stud next year under Coolmore’s National Hunt banner.

Bred by Barronstown Stud and raced by the Coolmore partners, Kew Gardens indicated an affinity for middle distances with a win in the 2000 metre Listed Zetland S. at two. He earned a first pattern victory in the G2 Queen’s Vase S. at Royal Ascot before successfully dropping down to a mile and a half in the G1 Grand Prix de Paris. He went back up in trip to best Lah Ti Dar (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the St Leger. Back for a 4-year-old campaign last year, his season was marked by a trio of runner-up efforts before he bested Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) by a nose in the G2 Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup.

Kew Gardens is out of the G1 Moyglare Stud S. winner Chelsea Rose, who has also produced the French Group 3 winner and G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest second Thawaany (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}).

“Kew Gardens is a big, good-looking horse, clear winded and an excellent mover,” O’Brien said. “He has a super mind and is extremely brave. He was a top-class middle-distance horse.”

Storm the Court Looks to Return to Winning Ways in Ohio Derby

Champion Storm the Court (Court Vision) seeks his first victory of the season in Saturday’s GIII Ohio Derby. Clinching the Eclipse award with a narrow upset at 45-1 in the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, the bay checked in fourth to recently retired GI Arkansas Derby winner Nadal (Blame) in the GII San Vicente S. Feb. 9. Third to recent GI Santa Anita Derby runner-up Authentic (Into Mischief) in the GII San Felipe S. Mar. 7, he was sixth in Nadal’s edition of the Arkansas Derby.

Steve Asmussen saddles a live one in Rowdy Yates (Morning Line), who is a three-time stakes winner at the listed level. Capturing the Riley Allison Derby at Sunland Jan. 26, the dark bay was fourth last time in the Saudi Derby Cup Feb. 29. The Hall of Famer also sends out Code Runner (Honor Code), who was eighth in Nadal’s Arkansas Derby and followed that effort with an allowance win at Lone Star June 8.

Lebda (Raison d’Etat) seeks his third straight score in this test. The dark bay took the Miracle Wood S. at Laurel Feb. 15 and roped in the Private Terms S. There Mar. 14.

Classic-Placed Hofburg To Enter Stud In Brazil

Hofburg, a classic-placed stakes winner, will begin his stud career at Haras Santa Maria de Araras in Brazil, according to the South American racing publication Turf Diario.

The 5-year-old son of Tapit raced as a homebred for Juddmonte Farms, and was trained by Bill Mott, winning three of 11 starts for earnings of $554,300.

After breaking his maiden in his 3-year-old debit, Hofburg tested the Grade 1 Florida Derby, where he finished second to Audible. This qualified him for the 2018 Kentucky Derby, where he gained ground in the stretch after a rough trip to finish seventh behind eventual Triple Crown winner Justify.

Hofburg's gaining trip in the Derby, paired with Tapit's growing tradition of success in the Belmont Stakes, led the colt to go off as the second choice in the third leg of the Triple Crown, where he ultimately finished third. He came back a month later to win the Curlin Stakes at Saratoga, then ran fourth in the G1 Pennsylvania Derby.

The horse racing sparingly after his 3-year-old season, winning a Saratoga allowance optional claiming race in his lone start at four, then going unplaced in a pair of graded stakes earlier this year.

Hofburg is out of the placed Touch Gold mare Soothing Touch, making him a half-brother to Grade 1 winner Emollient and Grade 2-placed stakes winner Courtier.

Other notable North American horses that have resided at Haras Santa Maria de Araras include Put It Back – the sire of Brazilian Triple Crown winner and current Calumet Farm stallion Bal a Bali – and Wild Event.

Canadian Horse Racing Hall Of Fame Induction Postponed Until 2021

At a meeting held June 23, 2020, the Board of Directors of the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Hall of Fame Induction Gala, due to the restrictions resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. It is the intention of the CHRHF to induct the Class of 2020, along with those inducted in 2021, at ceremonies tentatively scheduled to take place during the summer of 2021.

After the Board Meeting CHRHF President, Darryl Kaplan provided the following statement. “While consideration was given to alternate formats for the event, it was agreed that the Class of 2020 deserves to be honoured for their lifetime of achievements in Canadian horse racing with the full recognition bestowed to those inducted previously to the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame, and that includes being surrounded by the family and friends who have been part of their careers. Unfortunately, that is not possible at this time. While we are unable to hold the formal induction ceremony for Gary Boulanger, Sue Leslie, Mike Keogh, Paul MacDonell, Ben Wallace, Amour Angus, McWicked, Play the King, Rambling Willie and Tepin during 2020, we are fully committed to doing so in the near future.”

“Additionally, as a registered charity, the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame annual Induction Gala is a significant fundraiser for the organization. Like so many others in horse racing and beyond we are looking at creating alternate opportunities to generate the funds required to support the CHRHF's ongoing operation. Further information about these activities will be provided in the coming weeks.”

Details regarding the Nomination and Election of the Class of 2021 will be released this fall.
