American Pharoah Filly Scores Sweet Win in Wonder Again

SWEET MELANIA (f, 3, American Pharoah–Sweet N Discreet, by Discreet Cat) delivered the performance everyone expected, dominating the GIII Wonder Again S. from start to finish. Seizing the early advantage, the 6-5 chalk put up a half-mile in :47.62 with Antoinette (Hard Spun) in tow. Showing the way into the lane, the chestnut bursted clear in the lane to win as she pleased over Highland Glory (Sky Mesa). Just missing in Saratoga’s P.G. Johnson S. this summer, Sweet Melania romped in Keeneland’s GII Jessamine S. Oct. 9 and was third in the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf Nov. 1. Lifetime Record: 7-3-1-3.

Mott Hits 5,000 Career Win Mark With Churchill Downs Victory

Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott became only the seventh trainer in history to record 5,000 wins when Moon Over Miami notched a one-length score in the third race on Saturday at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.

Mott, who was inducted into racing's Hall of Fame in 1998, took out his trainer's license at age 16 in 1969. Throughout his storied career, the South Dakota native has won some of the world's most prestigious races including the 2019 Kentucky Derby (Country House), 1996 Dubai World Cup (Cigar) and 2010 Belmont Stakes (Drosselmeyer).

Mott was at Belmont Park on Saturday but his longtime assistant trainer Kenny McCarthy and veteran exercise rider Penny Gardiner were on hand to accept the accolade.

“We're so thrilled to achieve this milestone,” said McCarthy, who has worked under Mott for 25 years. “I know Bill is watching from New York but we are so happy, and a little relieved, to get this honor.”

Mott began his career under the tutelage of fellow Hall of Famer Jack Van Berg throughout most of the 1970s until he decided to open up his own stable in 1978. Over the next four decades, Mott trained six champions and 121 Grade I winners. Among the top horses under Mott's care were 1995-96 Champion Older Horse and Horse of the Year Cigar, 2012-13 Champion Older Female Royal Delta and 1998 Champion Older Filly Escena.

Mott held the all-time trainer lead at Churchill Downs for more than 31 years until Dale Romans surpassed his mark in 2017.

Mott ranks seventh in all-time wins behind Dale Baird (9,445), Steve Asmussen (8,873), Jerry Hollendorfer (7,651), Van Berg (6,523), King Leatherbury (6,503) and Scott Lake (6,104).

Ascot World Pool Grows Nearly 50%

The Tote’s Royal Ascot World Pool, which encompassed all 36 races at the meeting and took betting from 20 nations into a single pool, grew 49% from last year with a total £137-million bet. The Tote Win price beat the Industry Starting Price (SP) on 19 occasions across the 36 races and with Tote Guarantee in place the Tote has matched SP on the remaining occasions. This resulted in a 9% higher return on the Tote based on placing a £1 bet on each winner during the week.

Alex Frost, chief executive of the UK Tote Group, said, “We have all enjoyed the most incredible week of racing at Royal Ascot. We are very grateful to every member of the Ascot team for all of their hard work in making this possible and are delighted to be able to work alongside them to showcase the Royal meeting to a UK and international racing audience through the Tote.

“In only its second year, World Pool, operating under the banner of ‘Tote Superpools’ in the UK, has proved very popular with racing fans. We have seen a record increase in volumes and exceptional value offered throughout the week. We look forward to World Pool returning to Ascot for Champions Day in October and continuing to progress international cooperation to strengthen and grow pool betting on British racing.”
